GPL in 2005

Will we still be playing GPL in 2005?

Peter Ashley wondered whether GPL would still be raced in 2005 for lack of anything better. Some said they were bored and waiting for GP3 or World Sports Cars, while others expected GPL to last like vintage racing thanks to its online community and GPLEA's add-on tracks and cars. A side dispute arose over whether online racers were arrogant about offline-only players.

Will we still all be playing this sim in 2005 because nothing better has come along by then? Let's face it, GPL is a work of love from papy, and the we're all going to be stuck on it like the people still playing quakeworld, and the people who played falcon3 until su-27 was released. I won't be. GPL is good but not that good. To be honest, If nothing Better then gpl comes out this year I'll probably hang up my old wheel. > Will we still all be playing this sim in 2005 because nothing better has > come along by then?

I too am getting bored with GPL. I found N3 as a distraction, fun, but not really as good as GPL. GP3 and WSC are next.. fingers crossed.... until then.. I might actually go and get a life :-))))) James

GPL will remain the top sim with me until somebody with the expertise comes along and gives us either Can-Am 1960's, Trans-Am 1960's or Le Mans 1960's :-) Or all three! -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- > I too am getting bored with GPL. Personally, I'd be quite happy racing GPL for a good many years to come, despite the possibility of newer and better additions to the F1 genre. GP3 looks set to cause an absolute storm amongst its fans, so it might not be too long before many of us reduce the time we spend on GPL, but to stop racing it altogether, not a chance. Best regards, The Phoenix
I heard that before James, but you still pay it :) Andre

For many of us, GPL represents =racing= not playing games. It is possible that, even with technically "better" simulations available in the future, that GPL will continue to be used, just as vintage race cars continue to be raced.

>I too am getting bored with GPL. I found N3 as a distraction, fun, but not >really as good as GPL. I can't get into N3 at all (the demo, I haven't bought it). I'm not even a GPL diehard - I like the game, but I also like a good arcade racer (loved Midtown Madness for example). The problem with N3 is that is IS a sim - just not as good a one as GPL. I tried the Texas track in the N3 demo and thought "this is ok". Then I converted the track into GPL and tried running it there - wow, what a difference! The feeling of the car via FF, the instantaneous response from throttle-steering - everything just felt so much better, so much more real. I was e***d about N3 before it was released, it didn't sound bad. But it's driving/physics/FF model really is outdated. It's time for Papy to retire it. I know I won't be buying any more sims that aren't based on something at least as good as GPL. Joe McGinn _____________________ Radical Entertainment

Only trouble for the people who walk this road is the fact that they will be walking a rather lonely path in the offline world. I'll buy GP3 but it's certainly a backward step in terms of real racing with real people. Mark
Well, the rules of soccer, baseball etc haven't changed much recently and people still play them :-) Ok, not an entirely valid analogy, but where GPL's concerned it has all the elements in place for a long life. Active online community, physics which will be hard (but not impossible :-) to beat, and graphics which scale well with improved PC power. I'd really like something better to come along. I hope GP3 comes close, but it needs the online support to compete, because although AI racing can be a blast, there is *nothing* like a good race on VROC. Andrew McP

Still, GP2 only supports modem-play, ie 2 players. You can emulate this with kali, but if GP3 doesn't come with network code enabling 20 drivers, there's not much that Kali can do for you either (kali emulates an IPX network through TCP/IP=internet)

There should be some new tracks from the guys at GPLEA soon as well as car sets. This should help prolong it somewhat. Who knows what else this wonderful team will come up with. Andrew

If nothing comes out till then with the quality of GPL then yes I will still be racing GPL, maybe I'll even be pretty good at it by then. I wonder what the fastest Monza lap will be then? 1:24.?? I bought N3 mainly because of the better graphics, the physics they said they reworked feel the same as N2 to me. After racing GPL on the converted tracks N3 just seems sluggish and slow. The feeling you get at Tally with GPL just blows away N3, you feel like you're flying around that track which is the way it should be. I went back to N3 and thought I my setup was messed up or something. I hope N4 IS GPL in a nascar or a lot of people on this newsgroup will be highly dissappointed! Thing is, we will still be playing GPL online, even when GP3 comes out by the sounds of it. Having said that, GP3 is going to have to be something awesome to get me away from GPL offline. In fact, thinking about it, although it has been stated here that one of the reasons GPL failed to sell well because of the era that it covered, eventually the era covered becomes less important the more that you play. For instance the GPL AI drivers - Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Dennis Hulme etc - start to take on less significance because they appear to behave less like human drivers and more like computer AI. With this in mind, although GP3 in first flush is going to seem exceedingly attractive - because it covers the current era - unless the AI is done well, then after a while, its going to be like driving against computer opponents who just happen to be named after the current F1 drivers. I hope this won't be the case. -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

The bottom line for me is if it doesn't have online racing, then I'm just not going to buy it. Simply because the vast majority of my nightly racing time is spent racing gpl & nas3 online. SCGT just sits there gathering dust. Joel Willstein [email hidden]

As for the cars, they're current projects are to continue doing the 1967 cars correctly with as much detail as humanly possible. At the rate they're presently going at, the sim will have shelved by most of us by the time they finish the 67' carset. The only problem that I have with this is that the cars,(so far theBrabham and Ferrari), look fantantic, but once your racing, it really doesn't make any real difference. However, the new cockpits, & dashes make all the difference in the world. Joel Willstein [email hidden]

Well you might spend your time racing on-line but for alot of people they are too far away from any servers to race on-line. I don't give a toss if a game is multiplayer, I will only race against the AI or another player on the same computer. I'm sick and tired of this arrogance that online racers seem to have about them!
That's a rather extreme statement, Joel. (A little bird tells me that there is more than just Snetterton being worked on insofar as tracks are concerned. As for cars, that's a different matter altogether). Think of the longevity that GP2 has had, then remember that GPL is the only sim to offer the dynamics that it does. Don't shelve GPL so quickly because unless another sim with the same base characteristics is produced I would venture to say that GPL will be around for a long time to come. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----
I'ld say GPL will be on my computer for awhile longer, but like many others, it will depend on GP3. Come to think of it, I still have Cart Racing from Sierra on my computer. I bought that when it first came out. Would be nice to get an updated version. Anthony

Hmm...I didn't see it as arrogance. He just *prefers* online racing, and bases his purchases on availability of that feature. There's nothing wrong with that. Chris, I don't see where I was being arrogant. For me, online racing is a important feature. For you it's not. It's just that simple. But I'll tell you one thing, online racing is alot harder. You can't hit the reset button everytime you***up. You can't hit pause to collect your thoughts or decide what you want to do during a pit stop. You're running against human beings that do weird things at the darnest times, not programed AIs. Joel Willstein
