CD-RW question

I'm planning out a new system, and I was wondering, Do I need to also gst a CD-Rom or is a 8x/4x/32x CD-RW good enough to handle all CD needs? Do I really need to have both a CD-Rom and a CD-RW? -- Kevin Anderson --------------------------------------------------- DK-Racing #15 K_Anderson ------------------------------------------------- http://www.awtech.net/ [link lost in import]

Since your CD-RW will read normal CD-Rom at an average of 32x, you really won't have a need for another CD-ROm drive. Keep the slot open, in case you want a DVD-Rom in your unit later. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... 8x4x32 seems fast enough to serve as a CD-ROM as well. -- Chris Arndt =============================== 1999 FSSPRO BGN Champion 1999 ISR Shootout Runner up "All I can do on a given day is put myself in a position to win, and let circumstances dictate the outcome" -Richard Petty http://CArndt.tripod.com I'm planning out a new system, and I was wondering, Do I need to also gst a CD-Rom or is a 8x/4x/32x CD-RW good enough to handle all CD needs? No, you don't, but you may not want to wear out your expensive-to-replace CD-RW by spinning CDs in it all the time. You can get a decent CD-ROM for 50-60$ if you fry one (and they do eventually go, believe me), but you can't replace your CD-RW for 60$, even with a crappy one. Look at the specs for the CD-RW and check a number called "MTBF." It is a rating of "Mean Time Between Failures." This is the average number of hours that drive can be expected to last. When you look at it from the perspective that the manufacturer *expects* it to fail after a certain number of hours, you might feel compelled to rack up fewer hours on it. Just something to consider. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----
If you want to MP3 any albums you may want to keep that CD drive, its only one IDE connection after all. I've heard it can be tricky to rip digital source from a CD in a CD-RE drive. Is this true?

Should be ok, just bear in mind some copy protection on retail CD's may not be readable with the CD-RW. This means you can have the cd in the drive but the game keeps prompting you for it :( I've seen this with Janes sims on yamaha CD burners and I'm not sure if it extends to other burners. You might need no-cd patches from megagames.com to run these games properly. Hello, CD-Rom drives are so cheap you should get one in case you want to make "on the fly" recordings. The cost is so small for added convenience. In fact GPL refused to install from my CD Rom drive when I also had a Yamaha re-writer attached. I was advised by the tech support people here in the UK to take the sim back and get a refund. I never got round to it, and when the Yamaha packed up and I replaced it with a Mitsumi writer GPL magically decided it would now be happy to reside on my machine :-) Cheers Ken

The main thing you'll miss is being able to copy directly from CD-ROM to the CD-RW. However, I've generated enough coasters to now find it worth the extra time to copy a CD to the hard disk and then burn it to the CD-RW. Doug, below, made the most important point: you can copy directly between the CD and CDRW. Otherwise you have to ensure that you always have at least 600MB FREE space on your hard drive. The "bad" point would be that it eats an IDE slot (which means you'll only be able to have 2 IDE hard drives). A DVD drive could be a better idea, but I don't know about its limitation with copy protection. The most important point, tho', is that a few of the newer games have a serious problem with CDRW drives, so you'll want a CD-ROM to run them. If you DO get both drives, make sure you install everything from the CD-ROM, because many programs expect the CD to be in the same drive it was installed from. Gunner

Not true anymore!! I've just bought an Abit BE6-2, and it supports *eight* IDE devices as opposed to the usual 4. Now I can reconnect my 3rd hard drive that has my Linux once again. YESSSSSS!! There are some games out there that have problems with reading from the CD-RW, so another cheepo CD drive is certainly a good idea. Besides saving the wear and tear on a much more expensive CD-RW. -- //Chuck Kandler #70 //ChuckK on Won.net & WinVROC //K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 //The box said "Windows 0x5h or better", so I installed LINUX!
Just out of interest, how much was your BE6-2? Mine weighed in at AU$270, approx $175 US. ***y expensive, but made up for it by getting my Celeron 400 up to 550mhz.... 8 IDE ports is also a slight bonus. Mega handy.

Yeah, thought mine was quite pricey too. But worth it. I paid $140 US compared to the $95 that my BH6 ran last year. But with Abit's quality, along with the flexibility I require with the 8 IDE device support, it's worth every penny IMHO. -- //Chuck Kandler #70 //ChuckK on Won.net & WinVROC //K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 //The box said "Windows 0x5h or better", so I installed LINUX!

Wait - you couldn't install from your regular CD drive just because you also had a writer? Strange. I have a Yamaha writer to, and I didn't have any problem re-installing GPL... It's amazing that ANYTHING works anymore, given the different timings and tolerances... Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? I agree. On the fly burns are good if you KNOW that the CD will write well and you are rushed for time. Otherwise, I always make and ISO on my hard drive first.
