GPL on AMD Athlon????

7 posts by 6 people · 13 Jan 2000 - 17 Jan 2000

I'm upgrading my system. I'm in doubt between an Athlon 500 or a P3 600 Can someone post a benchmark like: Everything turned on on maximum detail starting from last in monza with full (original)grid How does an Athlon 500 perform on this conditions. What about the P3 600? My other specs are Voodoo3 3000 , 192 RAM Thanks Rafael

I've got an Athlon 550, Voodoo3 3000, 128 megs of ram. Screen res is set to 1280x1024 (my monitor's max res), max detail, full grid, Monza, I get 24 fps at very start of race, and constant 36 fps during race. I am using a Logitech FF with FF enabled. I had a PIII 450, and at the start of the race I was getting like 7 fps, with the same configuration. It was VERY choppy at the start of the race with the PIII, and it's smooth with the Athlon. It was almost impossible to drive at those settings with the PIII, but with the Athlon, it's no problem. I would recommend the Athlon over a PIII for GPL. Although I would probably recommend a Athlon 550 or 600. Why are you comparing an Athlon 500 to a PIII 600?

Personally I'd get an Athlon and then overclock it with one of the Athlon add-on overclocking cards that are now available. See my webpage (overclocking section) for more info.... 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html

Methinks there was something amiss! With the same setup (PIII 450, V3 3000) I get at least 22 FPS at Monza at the rear of a full grid at flagfall at 1280x1024, and then straight up to 36. With the PIII running at 550, at 1280x1024 I get 28-29 fps at flagfall and 36 from then on. Same config gives me 36 fps all the time at 1024x768. Why you would only get 7fps from a PIII is beyond me!
