I have and old 233mmx at home that I would like to setup to run GPL for my younger brother. I have tried a number of different system configurations to no avail. I am able to run Quake3 and UT quite well in fact and with a lot of details, but GPL won't even give me 15 fps with virtually just the track and some of the car left for graphics. The machine has a Voodoo2 (Righteous Orchid), I have tried all versions of Glide for the V2 and the best I get is in between 12-14 fps as a best result in training mode. The performance is so bad that if the resolution is set any higher than 640x480 nothing moves. I have utilities to degrament and free memory, I've overclocked the V2 to a fair limit and it has a fan attached to it, I have utilities like cacheman for virtual cache, I have a 512mb static swap file set on a different drive, all latest drivers have been installed and I have enough understanding to configure the BIOS properly so as to achieve the best performance out of that pc. I also have another 2 pc's of higher spec which I built that runs all of the games I play seamlessly. But I am almost giving up on this one, and it is frustrating because I am sure I have seen a post here somewhere about someone playing GPL on a p166 mmx. I hope with the arrival of the Rendition card I ordered I'll see some improvement. Here's the spec: P233 MMX 128mb EDO RAM Diamond Viper 550 16mb Righteous Orchid Voodoo 2 8mb --> used for GPL Win98 - DirectX 7a ---> (Worst performance with previous DX) Sound Blaster AWE32 full retail version. Gigabyte mainboard I would appreciate any tips, or is it a hopeless cause? Thanks. Mauricio

20-25 fps online (with the excellent winVROC) on an AMD K6 200mhz, voodoo1board (orchid righteous3d), awe64, 32meg ram, 400meg hard drive, 33.6 kpbs modem, and an old gravis analogue pro joystick with a dodgy pot that keeps sending me right when i move it all the way left.....not good. turn all graphics options except for groove, smoke and wheel textures off (those are the only ones you really need as they give you car feedback). FPS is more important than quality of visuals. Its all about the FEEL oh, and 5 race wins online at Michigan (2), Monza(2), and Watkins Glen(once) pez
it is important what type of motherboard you have. if it is a shit quality one it can have a massive influence on the overall performance of the machine, especially in games. When I bought my first machine 2 years ago it came with a vx pro motherboard by pc chips. I bought a voodoo card to play quake on and i was amazed at how poor the performance was compared to my friends computers of virtually the same spec. I even took the voodoo card back a couple of times before i accepted that the motherboard was the problem. a new motherboard turned my machine into the fastest among my friends from the slowest. in short your machine should be able to run GPL fine, especially in training mode.If it can't then there is a specific problem that need sot be dealt with. -- Rob.

I used a p200, 32 meg memory and a 12 meg voodoo 2 for a long time. I was able to get 36 fps with this machine in training mode. What detail are you using for mirrors? This is one of the main suckers for frames. Make sure that you have it set for cars only. It is also a good idea to turn the number of sounds down to three. If you are not too worried about sound quality, open up the app file in the GPL folder. Set quality to 0. This forces GPL to run sound in mono with a gain of around 3-5 frames. MS.
does anyone know what the various settings are for the sound quality line in the app.ini file for GPL and what they mean?
m.seery 07 Jan 2000#512897
0 is for mono and 2 is the default stereo. I'm not sure about 1. MS

On Thu, 6 Jan 2000 22:40:35 -0000, "Mark Seery" I haven't even got to a point where I could attempt to play with the ***pit view, all this bad performance is with the f10 view. I have actually set max sounds to 3, and have set the quality to low in the app.ini, I also have the mirrors set to only show cars. The machine has a Gigabyte mainboard which is not known for being the fastest in the market but nevertheless I would expect GPL to run. Cheers Mauricio.

Make sure you are not running in software mode. Open the file app.ini in your GPL directory. It should have (among other things) the following lines: [ Graphics ] lastRasterizerDLL = rast3dfx.dll ; Last rasterizer DLL selected / / Rolf

I think there's something wrong with your system. I have a Gateway2000 P5-100 that I stuck an Evergreen/Intel 233MMX Overdrive Processor in, and I get between 23-28 fps on the Monza track in training mode with most graphics options on. Last night, I tried a quick race at Monza with 5 AI opponents, and was getting 18 fps sitting at the starting line, and up to about 24 fps during the race. My system is not even as good as yours on paper, since I only have 64MB RAM and a 4MB Monster 3D (Voodoo1) graphics accellerator going through an ATI Mach64 2MB 2D video card. I'm running Win98 and DirectX 6.1. I would try using the http://www.winmag.com Wintune program, or the Winbench99 benchmark program at http://www.zdnet.com/zdbop/ to help you determine if there's a bottleneck in your system. <remove 7of9 for e-mail replies> -- Bill Jones e-mail addresses: (860) 701-1201 WWW: http://pages.cthome.net/billj

yup, with the rendition, (i got my 4meg thriller for 20 bucks!) i,m getting up to 36fps with 10 cars with horizon, track, groove, skids n smoke crowds and objects hehe! of course i don't in the grid! the voodoo ii i have is smoother at the start, but like you it doesn't cut the mustard, only up to 24-28 if i'm lucky. you will see better days with the rendition, especially on a slower machine. also, in the app ini. turn the sound quality to 0 and maybe even take out the hardware accelerated sound in yr control panel. i'm sure this has already been put out there to ya. chau, rob In article

I responded a few days ago that something must be wrong with your system because I was getting 24-28 fps in training mode at Monza in 640x480. That was with a 233MMX, 64MB RAM, 4MB Voodoo1. Over the weekend I installed a 12MB Voodoo2 PCI 1000 on the same system, and now get 32-36 fps at Monza in training mode. In a quick race with 5 AI opponents and starting at the rear, I was getting 26 fps sitting at the start line, and 28-34 fps during the race. Since your system has better specs than mine (128MB vs 64MB RAM), you should be getting better performance than me. I also compared the new V2 card against the V1 card with Viper Racing and N3: In VR with all graphics options set to HIGH, I was getting 25.9 fps. With the V2 card, 38.4 fps. In N3 testing mode, was getting average 20 fps with V1. With V2, average is now 30 fps, with many graphic options st to turn on automatically at 25 fps and turn off below 20 fps. It's not a hopeless cause!!! <remove 7of9 for e-mail replies> -- Bill Jones e-mail addresses: (860) 701-1201 WWW: http://pages.cthome.net/billj

This comment makes me think that GPL doesn't use the voodoo card as the resolution is not that critical (used to have a P200MMX with voodoo1). Are you sure that the glide option is selected at graphics settings? Maybe the Viper card even doesn't let programs access the Voodoo2 .

On Mon, 10 Jan 2000 09:31:25 -0500, "Bill Jones" I have decided to buy an Evergreen for the cpu and I will wait until that arrives so I can try again. After reading your reply I concluded you're right, there is something wrong with that system and I will get to the bottom of if at the weekend. Thanks for the info. Mauricio

On Mon, 10 Jan 2000 16:16:16 +0100, Gregor Veble I do run other games (Quake3 and UT) using the Voodoo2. The 3dfx option is selected in GPL (app.ini). The reason I mentioned higher resolution is because I thought I would have been able to run it in 800x600 with the V2, because I ran Quake2 in 1024x768 with decent frame rates. Resolution is critical as far as good graphics goes since the higher the resolution, the higher the level of details as you have more pixels displayed on the screen. I am awaiting the arrival of a Evergreen processor upgrade as they call it. I will see what sort of results I get from that. Judging from what I hear the Evergreen is just the thing for old pcs. Cheers Mauricio

Be careful which Evergreen you go with! I originally bought the MXPro240 to replace my Intel P5-100. This is a Winchip CPU. I got it from [link lost in import: /;When] I got it, I benchmarked it using ZD Labs Winbench program, and it turned out that the CPU Integer performance was improved with the upgrade processor, but Floating Point performance was worse than my Pentium 100 non-MMX! Not only that, but the system would crash on certain games with the Evergreen, particularly on CART Precision Racing, which I was into at the time. I called Evergreen's tech support, and they said for *** purposes, they would recommend the Evergreen/Intel solution, which is a genuine Intel P-233MMX CPU with a voltage adapter to enable it to be used with my Socket 5 motherboard. The processor upgrade cost about $150 after rebate, but [with the V2 card] has given me a marginally adequate *** machine, and I have been able to hold off getting a new system for over a year now. I'd be careful with the Evergreen upgrade processors, unless you go with the Evergreen/Intel unit. <remove 7of9 for e-mail replies> -- Bill Jones e-mail addresses: (860) 701-1201 WWW: http://pages.cthome.net/billj

Bill, I installed GPL on my old 233 with a V2 this morning and had exactly the same results you did. I was actually quite impressed with how good it looked. I'm used to running GPL on a PII 400, but with the graphics turned down and limited to 5 AI cars, the 233 did ok. I know what I'll be doing with my lunch hours from now on<g>. don [|]-(_)-[|]
