But I just bought a new VCR last night and was surprised to see it also plays NTSC tapes besides PAL (ignore the .ca - I live in Switzerland). I could finally brush the dust off the copy of Grand Prix that I brought with me from Canada. I found I could pick out the individual cars just by the sound - I personally still feel the standard GPL sounds are the best, but this is just a matter of opinion. Anyway, for those Europeans who have been waiting for Grand Prix in PAL format, why not convince yourselves that you need a new video recorder? The Toshiba 719 that I bought was only 348.- CHF for 6-head, HiFi and NTSC/PAL. Add 20 USD for a copy of Grand Prix from amazon.com and you're ready to watch. Sorry for the boring post. Stephen

As long as i taped it from TNT Classic movies i rather wait for the DVD :) I don't know if they are going to release it yet, but weirder stuff has been released lately so one can always hope. -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

curious, what's a PAL format? and what's NTSC? -- ========================================= Mike Barlow of Barlow Racing? ========================================= http://members.xoom.com/BarlowRacing/ Racing online with the help of...... NTSC is the american video standard, PAL the european standard So if you buy a video in the US, you cannot play it on a 'normal' european video recorder. Johan Veenstra.

LOL! Telling us that you had to buy a new video to play the NTSC tape kinda reminds me what I had to do to be able to play GPL. Below is the abbreviated version i.e. without the swear words and blasphemy:-) 1) June 1999 - Bought GPL on a special R99 (+$15) and even got a shoot them up space game free! 2) Later the same day - E***dly install GPL in my PII 350 (no 3D card). Scratch head when only can get 4fps. 3) After a few days - Realise that I need a 3D card to get this game to work. In complete 3D ignorance buy a Savage 4. 4) When I got home - Savage 4 won't work with my ALi Alladin chipset, following several months filled with extreme anguish until I realise it ain't gonna work. 5) Late October - Buy a new Motherboard and tower. Whoopee! Savage 4 works! GPL OpenGPL patch doesn't work with Savage 4! Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh! 6) November - Buy a Voodoo 2. At last, GPL in all it's brilliance! I thought. 7) Same day - Computer keeps using HD during GPL especially at the "Ring" making it unplayable. 8) Also the same day - realise my cheap joystick doesn't always send the car the way I intend. 9) Few days later - buy another 64mb ram and MS Precision pro. 10) December 1999 - Six months after buying GPL and having spent 30 times the original price of GPL on hardware, it is at last working! I'm sure no one cares either:) Chris

Wow...and I thought I had problems with GPL. 15fps minus 3D accelerator, buy TNT2 and discover my computer doesnt have an AGP socket (insert swear words here). Return TNT2 and get V3 2000 PCI...works great. Cant save a full race with my measly 32MB RAM. Damnit...buy 64 more MB RAM and finally it all works well. Chris
: curious, what's a PAL format? and what's NTSC? PAL is the European (western) television format, and NTSC is the North American (and Japanese?) format. They have slightly different line resolution, and I believe also refresh rate (I might be wrong there). It used to be very difficult to find a machine which would play both formats, so there was a fairly good business for converting tapes (so you could watch Aunt Marge's British holiday videos). Now there are video players under 400.- that will play both formats. Stephen

Below is the : abbreviated version i.e. without the swear words and blasphemy:-) Heh heh. the main reason I bought the video instead of buying a DVD player was because of the copy of Grand Prix sitting on my bookshelf. Don't tell my girlfriend. And if Grand Prix is released on DVD within the next 6 months, I will be most upset! After 6 months and I can live with it :) Stephen

PAL is 50 Hz and NTSC is 60 Hz. PAL has more horizontal lines (575?) than NTSC (525?) Color management is also a bit different, but i don't know much about that. NTSC is often called Not The Same Color :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying
