FPS-prob in GPL

5 posts by 5 people · 04 Jan 2000 - 05 Jan 2000

Hi, I bought a V2 just to be able to get constant 36 fps in GPL and good mirrors instead of what I had on my TNT, but so far I'm not impressed. I was under the impression that I should be able to run 1024 with most options turned on, but even at 800 and options dropped, I got bad fps in a race with 19 cars, if I drive alone it's fine though. So I'm wondering if there's any tweaks I must use to get decent fps while racing. I run latest CL-V2-drivers, GPL 1.2 and have a P-II 450. Any help appreciated /Stefan -- ========================================================== Software Developer Phone(Work): (0)243-886 01 Columna AB Phone(Cell): (0)70- 665 75 67 "Computers are like airconditioners; they stop working if you open Windows" ==========================================================

With 19 cars you will simply have to drop some graphics to get 36 fps all the time, even with a PII 450. Turn off the***pit graphics, the special effects, choose 'cars only' in mirrors etc. or reduce the number of opponents. For online racing you may have to drop even more and go back to 640x480. Not your V2's fault. The CPU simply can't handle any more. -- Bye, Leo

Do you by any chance still use OpenGL instead of Glide option?

Jeeez, I'm getting sick of posting this one here..... 128Mb PC100 ram with a 12Mb V2 card) and also do not get 36fps with all detail/effects/ etc turned *ON* at high resolutions. Try the following tips below to try to increase fps.....or get a better graphics card/system (try more ram, or buy a V3 2000 and overclock it to a V3 3000). The following is from my GPL webpage, I hope the info helps. See the url in my sig: -------------------------------------------------------------- To get the best performance from your PC when racing GPL (on-line or off-line), ideally, it should be the *only* program running. Turn off all (or as many as possible) your other programs before starting GPL. To check what programs are running in the background on your PC, (especially if using Win95/98) press Ctrl and Alt and Delete together to get the "Close program" box on your screen. This will tell you what programs are still running. Ideally you only need systray and explorer to be running (but this will depend on how you pc has been set-up?) Turning off virus checkers, and programs such as MS FastFind or ICQ will help to improve GPL's performance on your pc, as these programs use up valueable cpu resources if left running in the background. GPL runs better with faster PC systems, *FACT!* If you have an older or slower PC system, do not expect GPL to run perfectly at its maximum (36fps) frame rate, with all the graphics and sound options turned on. Ideally, for on-line racing you want to try and run GPL at a constant 36fps. Unless you have a brand new fast Ninja PC, this means turning down or off some of GPL's options, Including some or all of the following: Reduce the no' of sounds heard, Ideally to 3 or 4. Turn off the effects in the GPL graphics screen (Smoke, Dust, etc). Turn off the quality items (Dynamic lighting, etc). Turn down the detail slider. Reduce the screen resolution. Reduce the mirror detail. Reduce the number of trackside objects. Reduce the number of textured items (Clouds, Horizon, etc) Reduce the number of AI cars running. If your PC set-up is optimised for games, this will also improve GPL's performance. 64Mb of system RAM is an absolute minimum, 128Mb is far better. The latest drivers for all your sound cards, graphics cards, and modem will also help speed things up. PCI based cards are also prefered to older ISA cards, as PCI cards appear to have a lower CPU load than ISA cards, which frees up more CPU cycles to concentrate on the actual game itself. 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html

I get 36fps with my TNT (overclocked) The only drawback are the mirrors (refreshed every 4 frmes) But the game runs fine I have a Pentium2 at 466Mhz > Software Developer Phone(Work): (0)243-886 01 > Columna AB Phone(Cell): (0)70- 665 75 67 > "Computers are like airconditioners; they stop working > if you open Windows" > ==========================================================
