GPL: How do you get online play?

I used to play GPL online and know there is some sort of mod or something that is requires along with updated versions/patches. Unforutnately after the system got whacked I haven't been able to figure out how to do it again (6+ months of never thinking about it tends to do that to you). Help is welcome!
