Flame warNew Year post turns into millennium and grammar argument

A tipsy New Year's greeting led to a long off-topic argument over whether the millennium started in 2000 or 2001, how years and decades are counted, and the meaning of A.D. The thread then degenerated into spelling and grammar sniping, religion jabs and name-calling between Daxe Rexford, Leaky_Valve, Tom Pendergas and others, before the original poster apologised good-naturedly.

What the hell? Am I the only one with a working PC on New Years morn? Or are all of you just light-weights? Happy freaking New Mellinium peeps! I hope you all crash hard in turn one just because you're all too damn hungover to judge the corner! Yes, I'm stoned on Jack Daniels, so you have no excuse; unless you're all f***ing right now. Buzz me, or flame me, hell I don't care, I made it!!! Have fun! Tony Long P.S. Damn, I can still type.
I'm awake at 0541! I wasn't partying though. I was baby-sitting the power plant I work at all night. We came through Y2K without a glitch. I was at least hoping for a >little< glitch just to make it interesting. Oh well. I sent the wife and kids to the parents for the weekend just in case I didn't get home, so now I have the whole place to myself--time for some DTR!! Bryan

Not. It's been 1000 years since the year 1000, that's a Millenium. If you want to get really technical about it, most scholars agree that Jesus was born in 4-5 BC, so the "millenium" was four years ago. Joe McGinn _________________________ GA-Sports Writer http://www.ga-sports.com/

Same experts also generally think he wasn't born on 12/25 either. The day we use for Xmas was actually conveniently co-opted by early Xtians, being at that time already a pagan celebration of the winter solstice. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

Joe, it's based on the fact that we (the vast bulk of the so-called "western world") use the Gregorian calendar. We count a decade as being ten years, the first year is year 1 (not year 0) and the last year in the decade is year 10 (not year 0). Therefore a century is from Year 1 to Year 100 and a millennium is from Year 1 to Year 1000. To conclude, the 20th. century ends at midnight Year 2000 and the 21st. century starts in 2001.

That's probably technically true, but for me 2000 is much better to celebrate than 2001 :-) -- Cheers! Graeme "gradually recovering" Nash :-)
Um, no. There was no Year 0 A.D. First Millennium: Year 1 to Year 1000 A.D. Second Millennium: Year 1001 to Year 2000 Third Millennium: Year 2001 to Year 3000 (note to IT people: Start planning for Y3K). Finally, the Millennium isn't based on when Jesus was born, it's based on the calendar year. The calendar is based on an estimate of when Jesus was born, but the notion that the calendar inventors got the year and date wrong is moot. -- Philip D'Amato 1999 Ninja 500R > >The new millenium isn't until 2001. > Not. Their is a new racing coming out sim called "millenium"? Or is it "Mellooneyum"? I cant really remember. Not that I'm getting off topic now but the important thing is that I had this onion on my belt and my friend likes strawberry ice-cream. Is any of this making sense? I figured this was a good post to attach a thread like this to. Happy holidays guys and see you in the fence! A.T. Stiff

Why celebrate the fact that you are one year closer to the grave? I can appreciate not forgetting one's birthdate, where we raise a glass to the fact that we were born, but I cannot understand this almost hysterical euphoria that occurs at the end/beginning of each year. Why?

Actually, the IT people should be prepared for Y-10-K. They've only added 2 digits to the date counter, which means that all computers better be up to date by the year 9999 AD. Ah, well. The fearmongers and their crackpot buddies are _still_ telling us that Doomsday is Monday, when all the bus- inesses get started back up again. Tell that to the rest of us who actually checked ahead of time... And it's a moot point with me. The Earth is still rotat- ing on its axis, the sun is still rising and setting on- schedule, and the tides are still turning. Someone better go visit the crackpots in their caves and give them their old Win95 PCs; mine is still working fine nearly 36 hours after the predicted End Of The World. Meanwhile, as I'm going to be seeing how my new Compaq notebook will handle N3 and N1999, perhaps those poor suckers will be paying the con artists who sold them on the idea that every computer in the world was going to blow up a little visit. I may even provide the gasoline for their torches. Have a better year this year than you've had last year, Y'all... -- Yujon3D.

Are you calling *me* a stubborn idiot? So how do YOU count the decade of the 90's? With decades, people count from "0". I.E. 1990 - 1999. For the millenium, people count from "1", because there was no year zero. 1901-2000, and the next millenium starts with 2001. Therefore, there are two different counting methods, which would seem to conflict with each other. Simple. No need to get hostile. Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? No, I was correcting this person's mistaken assumption that A.D. stood for after death. I believe that the year of our lord stuff came about somewhere in the 600s or 700s when the creator of the gregorian calendar backdated (through research and assumptions, etc) to the supposed birth year of christ. I don;t know what system they were using at that time to ennumerate years, but I don't think in the year we think of as "1A.D." people were calling the previous year "1B.C." christ (according to the assorted works of fantasy that christians adhere to) wasn't important enough when he was born (or even for quite a while afterwards) to warrant people immediately dropping their current system and sudden counting everything in relation to his existence. I honestly couldn't care less when the new or next millenium starts or ends or whatever. It's just another year. People are e***d about it because the year now starts with 2 instead of 1 and that's really the whole of it. The only people I heard yelling about the new "millenium" was the media. All the real world people I know just called it 2000 or the year 2000. They aren't e***d because some calendar or other declares it is the second 1000 years after the alleged birth of christ or some other calendar says it's not. They don't care about that. All they care about is that they have a significantly different year to write on their checks or attached to their new car or to refer to in relation to their graduation from college or high school or as the birth year of their baby. People are e***d because it's 2000, not because it's the millenium (or not). Whatever. daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

>FYI Dave FYI Mork, my name's not Dave. I use lower case delberately to***off christians. It's funny to watch them get all bent out of shape when someone doesn't buy into their silly fairy tale. That's a typo. I had a keyboard for a long time that had the apostrophe where the semi-colon is now and since I don't type properly I keep hitting it when I'm going for the apostrophe. I usually go through and change them all afterwards since I hit the right key about 5% of the time. I guess I missed that correction, thank you for noticing. BTW, you don't have to capitalize a word at the end of a sentence. I'll remember that, now. Thanks. But the important thing is that we can both spell it better than Dan Quayle.

It looks like the thread flaming each other about when someone started counting AD or BC and how to name the next or past group of years is going to be longer than the thanks we gave to the folks at Papy for such a great program as GPL. It saddens me to think that when someone sees things a little differently than another that each view has to be defended till the death with personnal attacks and spelllling error bomb threats. The saddest part is how revealing these discussions are about the current state of our tolerance for each other and our differing views. I wonder if Christ was as intolerant as we seem to be. I wonder if he was intolerant of intolerance? Oh well, more than enough said. Take care all Larry

There are too many inconsistencies and unanswered questions involved (for starters) for my taste. You focus on that which you care about (which I think is tiresome and trivial and dogmatic) and I will focus on what I care about which you find tiresome and trivial and dogmatic. I promise you my spiritual side is likely much more well-explored than yours. We would probably disagree on the notion that spirituality must, by definition, include belief/faith/whatever in Jesus Christ. My decision to discount Christian mythology is not based in ignorance, but just the opposite. You miss the point entirely Eldred. It is arguable whether Jesus H Christ existed as a divine entity or not. Personally, I couldn't care less being one of no particular faith. The point is that the guy cannot lambast people for minor spelling mistakes and then claim a deliberate abuse of the rules of English grammar as his right without reeking of hypocracy. Fictional character or not. Jesus Christ has capitals fixed to his name in the same way that David Copperfield, Robinson Crusoe or Mickey Mouse do. A proper noun is a proper noun, period. The fact that the guy stated that he used lower case letters deliberately to "piss off Christians" i my opinion simply speaks volumes as to his character - seemingly based on intolerance, hypocracy and a genuine desire to stir the proverbial stick standing in it. >The point is that the guy cannot lambast people for minor spelling mistakes >and then claim a deliberate abuse of the rules of English grammar as his >right without reeking of hypocracy. Sure I can. There is a big difference between making a mistake because you don't know any better (in which case it isn't really a mistake, is it?) and doing something incorrectly on purpose for a specific reason. Ever notice that I don't capitalize my own name in my signature either? I'm not the first person to do that and I won't be the last. I didn't fail to capitalize it out of ignorance of the rules, so picking on people who are ignorant of the rules isn't hypocritical. I'm not intolerant of Christians, I just think a lot of them are pretty funny the way they get all foamed up about silly little things regarding their beliefs. I'm sure plenty of people think I'm pretty pathetic and silly for getting worked up about spelling errors and that's fine with me. I'll let you know when your opinion of me starts to matter. Don't hold your breath. Do I like to stir people up? Yep. I don't think being complacent about illiteracy is a good thing. I also like to be helpful sometimes and I do so in here on a regular basis. Like most people, I'm a mixed bag. As far as character, if you think that someone who likes to poke fun at religious people and occasionally pick on peoples spelling errors makes me a bad human being, then your criteria for character seems very shallow, IMHO.

I suppose you pronounce NASA "Nay-sa" for the same reason?
No. I don't think there are too many alternate pronunciations for NASA. It stands on its own as an acronym. To be honest with you I don't know what the exact phonetic rule is that could be applied to GIF, but I learned to read when phonetics were the method and I said 'GIF' (hard G) before I even knew what it stood for. You can find common examples of both. For instance, the liquor that is a distillate of juniper berries is pronounced as though it were spelled "Jin", but a job for a musician is called 'Gig.' In both cases you have the letter 'g' followed by the letter 'i' and then a consonant at the beginning of a syllable, but the 'g' is pronouced differently. If GIF is to be pronouced 'jif', then it would seem the word 'jiffy' should be spelled 'giffy.' The word 'giggle' is not pronouced as 'jiggle', etc. There probably is no real answer. Unlike NASA, you don't have thousands of people on television saying the word for years and years using one certain pronunciation to create a de facto correctness. Here is something that cites both but lists the 'g' one first: http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=Graphics%20Interchange... at I suppose it is ultimately personal preference.

Wow..... wow. I had no idea such a rabbit-chasing thread would result from a little J.D. induced joy. Let me revise and condense my original post (without the influence of Jack Daniels): Hi fellas, be happy. That's really all I wanted to say in the first post anyway. God bless. Tony Long P.S. Sorry for not checking my spelling. And yes I know the God bless statement doesn't bode well with the obscenities in my first post; thank God for His forgiving grace (what a great example). Now, I'm gonna turn some laps somewhere!
