PowerSims names Dirt Track Racing 1999 Sim of the Year

PowerSims.com announced Dirt Track Racing as its 1999 Sim of the Year. Some readers disputed the choice, preferring Rally Championship 2000, GPL, NASCAR 3 or GP500, while others praised DTR as accessible, stable and fun online. PowerSims's Scott Husted explained that RC2000 was excluded because it had not yet been released in the US, and a brief spat over American tastes ended in apologies.

DTR sim of the year? pfff. come on! DTR ain't a bad game but there have been many better ones this year... GP500, RC2000, Nascar 3 and a number of others...
G_Major 31 Dec 1999#511570
Excuse me for bashing this, but a 1999 game of the year, well..................HAS TO BE MADE IN 1999!!! How about at least calling the 2000 game of the year award. And do a real award to a game for the 1999 award made in 1999 like NASCAR 3, NASCAR legends, or DTR!!
G_Major 31 Dec 1999#511571
You Know that link of that mysterey sim is very misleading, you post a link of the game of the year award and it seems that at first WSC is the game of the year, I think it has to do with that huge ass picture of WSC and that really small pic of DTR!
Scott Moore 31 Dec 1999#511572
Here's my take on what you said: DTR got my vote for 3 reasons. It is the first sim since GPL to break any new ground at all, it worked very well right out of the box, and it's more fun than anything else going right now. NASCAR 3 isn't near enough an upgrade from NASCAR 2 to warrant any awards, and the multiplayer is terminally broken. GP 500, while great, is nowhere near as unique as DTR. There ar eseveral passable bike sims, but only one dirt racing sim. RC2000 wasn't even considered, and while not certain, I doubt it will be a big hit in the US- and since that's where we're based, that has to be taken into account. -- Scott Moore Sports *** Network [link lost in import: /***.com] Powersims http://www.powersims.com > DTR sim of the year? pfff. come on! It's a sad year when Redneck Racing is sim of the year!
John Bodin 31 Dec 1999#511576
How narrow is your world view, Jalo? "Redneck Racing?" Gimme a break. The award is dead-on, if you ask me. DTR is fun, challenging to the diehard sim racer, and accessible to the sim racing novice -- things that VERY few other racing SIMS have accomplished. GPL is challenging to diehard sim racers, but virtually inaccessible to even THAT segment of the population if they're not willing to invest hours and hours just to get up to speed. NFS, Test Drive, and other arcade racers are appealing to novices, but offer no long-term challenges and hold little or no attraction to those who want greater realism from their racing games/sims. Dirt Track Racing has it all in a nutshell. If you can't handle a little dirt, then go enjoy your wine (whine?) and cheese, or your tea and crumpets, or whatever -- but don't bash a great sim just because you're potentially too close-minded to comprehend the inherent goodness in the concept. -- JB >> PowerSims.com has announced the winner of its first annual Sim of the Year

I was not impressed with the graphics on the demo or the way the cars handled. was it improved in the final release of the game? if not, I would have to agree with pierce. DTR racing sim of the year?? based on the demo I would not buy DTR just my honest 2 cents worth

For everyone who asked... Rally Championship 2000 was not considered because it has not been released in the United States yet. (Thats not a slight to the Europeans and the rest of the world! It only means that many in the US, including several on our staff, have not had the opportunity to try RC2000 other than the demo. Believe me.. you don't want us voting on the DEMO <G>) I would also like to add that we don't expect everyone to agree with the outcome of the voting at PowerSims.com. I doubt Motor Trend expects everyone to agree with their car of the year <G> As I can only speak for myself, I voted for DTR first because it opened up a new genre for the sim racing community and did so with relatively few bugs and problems. That is not to demean N3, NL or GP500. If GPL would have been released in 1999... we all know who would have won <VBG> The fact is, again my personal vote, DTR brought the most to the table in 1999. Couldn't have put it better myself. Andrew.
Well, since I have not tried DTR I cannot say if its good or not. I like GPL, but will admit the hours it takes to get up to speed in a nightmare. I stopped playing it for six months due to a slow PC and other things and well it took all might to get down into the 1:06s at Watkins, and I am still running only 1:29s at Monza. I am accustomed to runnings low 1:05s at watkins and high 1:27s at Monza. One game that does stand out in my mind and its due to the third party support is SCGT. The game feels like a modern sports racer or sports sedan on slicks, and with the breadth of new cars comming out its almost a new sim every week. I had to pair down my patch folder due to having so many cars and not seeing the ones I wanted to race against, but a few times a month. The cars handle distinctly different from eachother, you have a wide vareity of cars with all the new stuff, anything from a Sauber Merc, to Panoz LMP to a McLaren M8D in the top class to even some stirring Lotus Cortinas. The game does have a down side, terrible online play, and the AI well needs adjustment, I finally got the AI sorted to where they keep up with me, but you really have to watch out since they drive like Dale Earnhart during the early 80s. I also have Nascar Legends which is the first Nascar game I ever bought. Its a blast, you really gett he feeling like your running in the middle of the pack even with the terrible AI at Riverside. All the dirt flying in front does give you an idea of what it was like to be in the car at that track during a Nascar race. Best Pure Sim is GPL Best Sim to mess about with to me is SCGT. Best feeling like you are really in the car during a real race to me is Nascar Legends. Well that my two cents. Dave

I am very happy with DTR, a true sim, flawless performance and loads of fun. But... even though it is an "old" sim I have to cast my vote for GPL. John Moore

Nowhere does it say that you aren't going to consider any sims that you "doubt it will be a big hit in the US". Maybe you should rename your "1999 Sim of the Year" Award to the "1999 American Sim of the Year Award" Maybe A.J. I was explaining MY OWN personal reasons for voting the way I did- not making amy comment on the policies of Powersims. The context was that Rallying is not popular here, and I have no interest in it, so it wouldn't recieve much notice from me personally. There are probably some of the others at Powersims who feel differently, but I can't speak for them. I could have worded that better, I suppose- but the fact that DTR is an Australian import sort of blows the whole American- only thing out of the water, don't you think? And the fact that the art for N3 and Legends was done in Russia? Or that GP500 was considered, even though it hasn't had a US release?
Joao, I apologize, but I explained this previously in another post and the hint of arrogance in your post I feel was uncalled for. We did not consider Rally Championship 2000 because it has not been released here in the United States. How do you expect the staff of PowerSims to vote for a sim that has not even been released here in the United States? I personally am not prejudice against Rally... I watch it quite a bit on SpeedVision and enjoy it greatly! Believe me, you would not want us voting on the basis of the Demo... if we did, Rally Championship would not even be mentioned. Until Rally Championship 2000 is released in the US and me and my staff can get a copy and evaluate it, I can hardly vote for the title in the Sim of the Year award. It would be like me voting for World Sports Car based on the screenshots <VBG> The Sim of the Year Award was voted on by the staff of PowerSims.com. It is in no way based on sales volume. If we based a determination on that criteria, where would that have left GPL if it were in the running? Scott PA-Scott PowerSims.com -- Scott B. So you're saying that RC2000 could be the best sim ever made for the PC, but because you can't get a copy of it, it's DQ'ed? So DTR is actually just the best sim of 1999 that you played. Hmmm...from what I've been reading RC2000 would have given DTR a big-time run for it's money. Too bad it didn't get the chance. -- -Brett Goodbye Greg Moore 1975-1999 Go COLTS! Go HOOSIERS! I assumed you were a representing powersims.com my apologies if my assumption was in error, I guess maybe you just hit a sore spot with me with your comment about what is "popular" here in the U.S. as a consideration for what should be in the running for sim of the year. I haven't tried DTR or GP500 so I can't really compare them to RC2000 or even GPL, nor did I know that they were not American made sims or, but as a longtime F1 fan (and WRC Rally fan) here in the U.S. where most people don't even know these wonderful auto sports exist, I've spent my share of time arguing with stick and ball fans and even left turn racing-only fans (NASCAR) the merit of F1 and Rally (and even CART) as exciting "sports". I automatically get touchy when someone tries to use American popularity as a judgement of whether something is good or not, there are plenty of great sports that most Americans have never heard of, but this should not mean that the opinion of the rest of the world doesn't count, after all isn't the U.S. the home of the Baseball "World Series" with competing teams limited to only American Baseball teams, I've always thought that pretty strange, luckily Speedvision is becoming more widely available and more and more Americans are becoming aware of other types of exciting motorsports besides NASCAR. I guess it makes a bit more sense now knowing you were speaking for yourself and not Powersims as a whole my apologies if my response was a bit defensive. Hi Scott, Yes I agree with you, I apologize for my knee-jerk response, Scott Moore's post hit one of my sensitive nerves about American popularity as a criteria for whether a sport is a valid sport or not. (I've had more than a few arguments with Americans who don't consider "auto racing" a sport at all, when compared to Baseball and Football just because it isn't as popular) Scott Moore's post makes more sense when put in the context that it was his personal opinion regarding his vote and not the criteria used to judge the sim of the year award. And yes, unfortunaltely RC2000 is not available here in the U.S. yet, I ordered my copy from the U.K. (unfortunately even if it was available, it only becomes great once patched and the settings in the ral.cfg file are tweaked to provide a more simulation-like feel as opposed to the default arcade-like handling without tweaks). I'm afraid it probably would not do to well in your voting in default form, however once tweaked it proves to be a quite fun rally sim. Thanks for clearing that up and apologies for my defensiveness. No problem- I wasn't as clear as I could have been, and I tried to rectify that in the followup. And yes, I know what you mean about people and their ideas of what constitutes "sport"- just because I don't find a certain type of racing exciting, doesn't mean it's not valid, and hope I didn't make it sound that way. > >I was explaining MY OWN personal reasons for voting the way I did- not > >making amy comment on the policies of Powersims. Well lets put it this way... How can something win an award if it's generally unavailable to those who are voting and evaluating?? NASCAR 4 is going to be great so Im told. I guess I should vote for it regardless if its available or not right? WSC Looks awesome in screenshots.. guess maybe I should have voted for it? Well, you can get RC2000 from internet sellers. So, RC2000 is available even to those of us in the US. Unless of course you do all of your PC game shopping at Wallmart.

Twice. MLB is also considering Mexico City for an expansion team in the future. I also agree. Speedvision just needs to get rid of the military aircraft shows and leave them to the History channel. Well, I've read all the posts as to the best sim of the year. And for my money, there isn't one. Maybe 2000 will have a few contenders with WSC and the Trans-Am sims. Joel Willstein
>Although I do agree with the point you are trying to make, may I point >out that there are 2 Canadian teams that play in MLB, and in fact >one(Toronto), won the series. Twice. MLB is also considering Mexico City >for an expansion team in the future. Very good point. Agree with you on that one, but there must be plane nuts and boat nuts out there like there are us auto-racing nuts, and as long as Speedvision keeps giving us such great auto and motorcycle racing coverage I don't mind the plane and boat stuff too much, it must help them pay the bills. Let's just hope Speedvision doesn't become like ESPN who built up their business as an autoracing coverage channel and then once successful turned into yet another crappy sports channel where auto racing is given no respect. Very very happy that we have Speedvision. Seeyas on the track. --John (Joao) Silva GPL Ferrari driver. Powerslide Racing Team - GMSS League F1 division. Ok everybody has had there say now its my turn. I never knew what dirt racing was about let alone intrested in it. When I tried the Demo of DTR I was hooked on the on-line play. Being in Australia it is very dificult to get a good ping to the US. But with DTR a ping of 600 is acceptable. On-line racing is the future of any car sim. DTR have made a huge effort in this department, well done and congratulations on the award, u deserved it. Regards, DTR very nite >I am very happy with DTR, a true sim, flawless performance and loads of fun.
