God Bless you Mike, I live in Hell Titanic territory less than 1Km from the closest CO and they can't tell me when I might be able to get DSL service in any flavor! JGH
Heck I called and they have my closest sub-station all converted and ready to go . . . BUT for some reason they will not allow anyone to use it yet? So I will try cable for a year. SLG

I am in Atlanta and had to deal with the load coils and Bellsouth. They did remove them off my line. It took 6 months but they did do it. With the load coils on though you will not be able xDSL. Good luck and don't give up, try different ISP's if you have to, I went with Speakeasy.net and they were the ones that finally got Bellsouth to remove the load coils. -- Jeff Murchison JR Screamers League Admin www.speakeasy.org/~jmurch > A lot of the problems with installation is distance and in addition to that > there are what they call load coils on some lines. Mike, The load coils are installed to equalize the frequency response over long cable runs from the telephone co's central office equipment. If they take them out, it would probably lead to complaints about voice quality on the line. I don't think the phone companies are really geared up to get DSL off the ground just yet. In spite of the fact tht they market it heavily, the people out on the street making things work haven't been educated enough to know what's involved in making it work. Jeff H.

A lot of the problems with installation is distance and in addition to that there are what they call load coils on some lines. I called Bellsouth and checked that my line was ok and they sent a technician out to install. When he got to my house, he said that I was approximately 21M feet out which is about 3M too much. He said that he would install though and that I should get speeds of 500K or less. After running a few small tests he came back and said there was a load coil on my phone line. These are used for filtering out noise and static. He noted that this would have to be removed before he could install the service and that it should not be a problem. After two weeks of calling and calling to the DSL folks and the local (NC) line offices, the final answer from the engineering supervisor and DSL supervisor was that at this time Bellsouth would not be removing any load coils for anyone, so DSL would not "at this time" be available to me. If there is anyone out there that knows something that I do not about this situation, please let me know, I would be greatful. Sorry to get off the subject there guys, but had to spread some knowledge so that some others may save some time and frustration, not to mention the disappoinment as Bellsouth is doing this to a lot of folks! make them get you another pair without them. they generally set aside several pairs for potential ISDN use. Call higher in the company to a fourth or fifth level exec. they hate that and will try to satisfy you.
