Trivia: what gas CART and F1 put in their tyres
Rory S. Brown posed a trivia question about what CART and F1 teams put in their tyres. Most respondents answered nitrogen, because dry gas gives more predictable pressure changes with temperature. Brown said his source at Player's/Forsythe told him F1 used air dried with an expensive machine, which others questioned.

a - nitrogen
b - it contains less moisture, which makes the pressure change as the
tire heats up more predictable...

I dunno about CART, but NASCAR uses Nitrogen in their tires because it is
more stable pressure-wise throughout the range of temperatures the tire
undergoes.

They use nitrogen because the tire pressures don't change so much with
increasing temperature.

Guessing nitrogen because it's relatively inert (won't burn up in a fire).

The correct answer is Nitrogen, because it is inert, which means it is
stable (does not contain moisture, nor any other contaminants) and,
therefore, is a stable substance. Sort of like the difference between
using tap water versus distilled water in your lead-acid battery.

They use something so secret that I would have to kill you if I told you. Or
in other words, CART will get it in 2005. In actual fact its.....nitrogen.
Steve (watch for the incoming now)
I was told by a source in the Players/Forsythe Racing Team they use air but
dry it with a mega buck machine.

All gasses will behave the same in a tire, except for two things:
1) If they react with the *** or other gas components, especially at
elevated temperatures.
2) If they contain moisture.
If the F1 cars use nitrogen, it would be because it is easy and cheap to get
dry nitrogen from any gas supply. Dry air is probably harder to come by,
unless you have your own drying machine.
Kevin Caldwell

In error I may have implied Players/Forsythe use air. Cart uses Nitrogen.
I was told by Players/Forsythe that F1 uses Air, which they dry with a mega
buck machine.
