DX7a - Question for people who had problems with DX7

24 posts by 13 people · 19 Dec 1999 - 04 Jan 2000

Does DirectX 7a fix DirectX 7's problems?

Joe McGinn asked whether DirectX 7a fixed the low frame rates that DirectX 7 caused on his Voodoo2 system. Several users said it fixed their controller and frame-rate issues in GPL and Dirt Track Racing. A poster named Rob insisted that any problems came from user misconfiguration, which others angrily disputed.

Has anyone who experienced abnormaly low-framerates in games with DX7 tried DX7a yet? DX7 butchered framerates on my Voodoo2 12MB system, and it was such a pain to uninstall, I don't want to try it again unless I know this problem has been fixed. I canonly tell you that DX7a works great for me. I had major controller problems with DX7, and also experienced problems using my 12 meg voodoo 2. Using 7a, everything works great for me now.

Joe, If you had problems with previous versions of DX, you weren't doing something right.
Andrew 20 Dec 1999#509983
Not so. The problems were widely reported. Besides why would MS fix something that wasn't broke? Andrew >Joe, >If you had problems with previous versions of DX, you weren't doing >something right.
rob 20 Dec 1999#509984
An upgrade doesn't necessarily mean something was "broke." 7a just improves force feedback support. If you get new drivers for your video card, does that mean that the card didn't work right before? It just works better.

>If you had problems with previous versions of DX, you weren't doing >something right. You must work for a games customer support department. You've obviously read the first rule in their manual: 1. ALWAYS blame the user. Joe McGinn _________________________ GA-Sports Writer http://www.ga-sports.com/

>If you had problems with previous versions of DX, you weren't doing >something right. P.S. - I see you haven't responded to the many substantive objections to your assertions in the previous DX7a thread (on this group). Are you some kind of troll, you just go around making unsupportable claims and then disappear when challenged? Joe McGinn _________________________ GA-Sports Writer http://www.ga-sports.com/

What objections? I see two responses here; yours and Andrew's. I'm just saying that DirectX poses no threat to anyone's system if configured properly. The hesitation to downlaod it just seems a little silly to me. You wouldn't have a problem downloading a soundcard or video card driver. DX and all the drivers you download are small but steady improvements for your products.
>An upgrade doesn't necessarily mean something was "broke." 7a just improves >force feedback support. If you get new drivers for your video card, does >that mean that the card didn't work right before? It just works better. Yeah! And in the case of ppl using N3 & MS Presion Pro Wheel (non-FF), it may actually just WORK! Randy

My system worked fine with all versions of DX before 7, but 7 caused a lot of slowdown in GPL, 7a has now fixed this. This tells me that MS stuffed up somewhere along the line as many people also had similar and worse probs in previously fine systems. -- Ian Parker UKGPL League http://members.xoom.com/ukgpl/index.html http://www.ukgpl.com -- > Joe, > If you had problems with previous versions of DX, you weren't doing > something right. > > Has anyone who experienced abnormaly low-framerates in games with DX7 > > tried DX7a yet? > > DX7 butchered framerates on my Voodoo2 12MB system, and it was such a > > pain to uninstall, I don't want to try it again unless I know this > > problem has been fixed. > > Joe McGinn > > _________________________ > > GA-Sports Writer > > http://www.ga-sports.com/

No,you just don't know how to"correctly configure your system" - Just ask Rob ;-) Phillip

Thats what I'd figured, but maybe its direct X that doesn't know how to "correctly configure your system" and I'm getting the blame ;) -- Ian Parker [email hidden] UKGPL League http://members.xoom.com/ukgpl/index.html http://www.ukgpl.com -- parcher <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:83mpd6$jun$[email hidden]... > > Ian Parker <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:Oaz74.2447$[email hidden]... > > My system worked fine with all versions of DX before 7, but 7 caused a lot > > of slowdown in GPL, 7a has now fixed this. This is due to the fact that it is a lot easier to go back to older sound/video card drivers than it is to get rid of a bad DX version. When you get screwed by one these Direct X bugs, I think you might be a little more open minded.

Well, DX7 was _certainly_ broke. All you have to do is read about all the controller problems reported here (mine included). -larry "Rob" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:yOq74.11515$[email hidden]... > An upgrade doesn't necessarily mean something was "broke." 7a justimproves

That was Rob who said that, not me! I know how bad DX7 was. Besides, I wouldn't be so rude as to "blame the user" in any case. ;-) "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Joe, I held off installing DX7 after reading all the negative posts. But when DX7a was released, I read both the pro and cons, and decided to give it a try. GPL & Nas3 run just fine. Both sims seem to be a little brighter with the same gamma settings. The hesitation that I got at when I entered a track was now gone. I can't honestly say that I can see or feel anything else. I do use a MSFF wheel, and it seems exactly the same as before. Joel Willstein

I may give it a try, since the "uninstall" utility on the net did work for me when DX7 infected my system. Joe McGinn _________________________ GA-Sports Writer http://www.ga-sports.com/
Hi ! Got a Geforce Guillemot Prophet SDR last week. Implemented it in the AGP port:, where it replaces a TNT 16Mo from STB. But dispointment when running 3D car racing sims: 15/16 fps using OpenGL on my new Prophet, with flickering mirrors... Unusable, and frustrating. I know GPL is quite an old game ( 12 months old !! ), so what do new ones give ? - Spirit of Speed 1937: runs nicely with the Voodoo. But when swithched to the Prophet and DirectX7: the two front wheels of the cars are linked by black lines, like sort of a harvesting machine !! And a lot of elements from the ladscape are scattered on the track itself !! Unplayable at all. - TOCA 2: Ok with the VooDoo, flickering and full of artefacts when switched to the Prophet. I certainly missed something.... Thanks in advance for any help provided. Toca 2 Runs Perfect on my 3dprohet SDR/Athlon 500 Combo. I haven't played the other games that you mentioned. The 3DProhet is the only Video card that is installed in my system. Try removing the voodoo (Temporarily) and test the games again. On Thu, 30 Dec 1999 15:47:37 +0100, "Herv NICOLLE"
