GPL. Good starts?

I've had GPL for 3 weeks now and I'm not doing too bad but if I qualify well (with the slow AI core.ini file) I lose my hard earned qualifying efforts with ***starts. I find that the engine bogs a lot with medium revs. If I try more revs I spin off sideways :) I'm in the Murasama BTW (good car that) but I assume the theory is the same for all. (I have a MS wheel/pedals and a clutch button) Thanks Kev
Hi! Why don't you spend an hour or so training starts? Just learn how to use the clutch, how to accelerate out of stillstand, how to compensate the rev-hit, when you release the clutch, and all that sort of things. The track is yours during free practise, so use it! I've painted the whole start-/finish-straight of Monza black until I got used to good starts, but who cares? ;))) Regards Crash Kev schrieb:
The torque you get for a particular throttle setting varies a lot with RPM. So as you accelerate to higher speeds, watch carefully for large increases in torque/horsepower. You may have to throttle back a bit at the higher RPMs in the lower gears to keep from spinning. This may be surprising you until you are ready and waiting for it. Learn the sound and the feel of both rear wheels at a point near breakaway and be able to stay just under that. It doesn't take a _lot_ of modulation (even on the Lotus), but it does require some. I used to qualify 1st at Silverstone in Pro-Long, and the AI always crash me from the rear at first corner ! The only way to be safe is to keep very at right when i brake and let pass 2 or 3 AI :o( Do they have cold tire or not ? Also, i was so annoyed that i decided to catch an AI up and to crash it from the rear, i did it on the 2rd corner ( left one ), i was happy , because a thought it was going to crash on the side road, but, instead, the AI crash me from the right side ! I've watched the replay, and the AI managed to put right is car a way it's impossible to do !!! Is there a tweak for this ? I know GPL can't compute physics for all AI, but it's very annoying that AI can do impossible things. :o(

A common problem, which I'm afraid can only be solved (and yes, it can be solved) by lots of practice. I find it best to hold the revs steady near the redline, release the clutch and ease of the gas slightly at the green flag, and then put the power back on with some throttle. As soon as the car begins to slide to the side, decrease the power. As soon as the tires grip again, increase the power. The most important thing is to learn the way the wheels sound as they're spinning. Soon you'll be able to know exactly when to ease off and when to speed up just by listening to a wheel spin, as I do Phil Winstow ICQ: 57400677

The Honda (murasama) is the hardest to get off the line quickly. I found it needs to be revved high and once you engage first, be gentle and build to full throttle. I like to start from the back of the grid and can usually pick up places on the start and get blown off the track within a few laps. Practice helps! Jeff
one of your problems is in using the murasama/honda. It seems to bog down a lot more than any other car. It is one of the few cars where its actually hard to get wheelspin in 1st. you really have to rev it and dump the clutch. in the lotus and most others just revving it in first will do it even if you are moving already. also i think using the clutch is overrated. even with all aids off, GPL gives you a kind of autoclutch for starts anyway. Even if you use a manual clutch its still there. I just hold the revs at around 7000 rpm or so (depends on gearing and car) when the flag goes down i slam it into first, the compensate with the throttle to keep the revs up and wheelspin to a minimum (a small amount of wheelspin for a second or too is just about right). I always beat the AI this way, and all my mates aswell.
I see. I squeeze the thottle hard with clutch on and when the green flag comes down, I release the clutch. I usually find myself starting earlier than the AI cars. Is it "cheating"? that's right, but you loose about half a second or more, because there is a delay between the pressing of the shift-button and the actual shifting. Lio

So don't shift. Put it in gear and sit there with the engine idling. The brakes will hold the car automatically until you hit the gas. When you do, you get a brief clutch effect, and the revs shoot up. You then can modulate the throttle. Try it sometime. It works well in every car except the BRM. David
well its definately NOT half a second. anyway what about the delay in activating the clutch(digital or analogue) rob

Put the car in gear before the green flag... I'm using a button for the clutch (till my home made peds are ready). I put the car in 1st gear, rev the engine up to 5000rpm or so, and when the flag goes down I release the clutch and slam the throttle at the same time. Back off the throttle a little before the wheels start spinning and I'm off the line fast and easy (mostly...) ---SimTim---
