GPL and ADSL Problem

Fixing GPL online connection timeouts on ADSL

Jaz could not join any online GPL race over PacBell ADSL despite low pings in WinVROC. After testing with Kenny L., he found the cause was a second network card, and later a proxy server's DHCP setting. The problem had nothing to do with the ISP.

Since, I always had ADSL, I have not tried an analog modem, which I will install this weekend (got to look in my junk box to dig one out). But, the problem is sounding more and more like ISP related, perhaps PacBell has setup a firewall to prevent VROC to connect. I will post my analog modem trial soon... I just spoke with PacBell about their adsl service and was told that there is no firewall of any sort between me and the Internet. So I would like to try a few more thing before I give up: 1. connect to an Host IP without WinVROC or JavaVROC, could someone supply me with a few IP addresses to try? 2. install an analog modem and try to connect the old fashion way, although this seems like a lousy way to go, even it works... Any help will be appreciated. Jaz Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Connections timed out, can't join any race even when WinVROC showed low Ping times. I have read the FAQ and Troubleshooting sections in VROC, but still I can't figure out why I can't join any online race... It can't be that difficult... Jaz

I had something like this happen to me last January when I suddenly went from good GPL connects on my dial up to "connection timed out". Never managed to resolve the issue since I got cable shortly after which cured that particular problem. At the time I did think that it was either due to some fiddling I'd done with the MTU settings or that my ISP had done something to affect the type of packets GPL uses ( can't remember the name at the moment). Can you connect directly to anyone through the address book without using WinVROC? Were you able to connect before you got your ADSL line? David remove not from my address to reply

Not a firewall per se', but they're probably masking your IP. Try your question in comp.dcom.xdsl and the gurus there may be able to help you a little better. Gunner

Did you remove the semi-colon before alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1? Remco Jaz <[email hidden]> wrote:

Remco, Yes, the semi-colon is off. GPL correctly picked up my static IP address, so I don't think the alternate_ip_addr_lookup setting would make any difference. I saw you trying to join my J.SZE F2 host last night, but you couldn't get in right? What was the response on your end, and what ping time was it if you can recall. Alright! I finally solve the mystery of my adsl connection, thanks to Kenny L., who helped me troubleshoot my system. It turned out there was nothing wrong with the PacBell ADSL service at all. The problem was caused by the second NIC in my system, for some reason GPL just won't work when that was in the system, even if the correct static IP was selected. My interim solution was simple: disable the device in Windows. But now I can't share my ADSL modem with others on my LAN... I know GPL works with proxy server such as Sygate, as Alison has written about it in her VROC FAQ. Perhaps, my setting were not acceptable, in the mean time, I could join and host races, finally! Thanks for all your advice. And a great big thanks for Kenny ;-) You da man! Jerry Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Kenny, You are quite welcome, you deserver all the credit! Anyway, I did a bit more digging this afternoon and managed to figure out the problem with my proxy server for those that care. Here was what happened: Sygate's built-in DCHP server needed to be disabled (just as Alison said in her FAQ, why didn't I pick that up earlier?!) and client IP addresses assigned manually. So here is what it should look like: ADSL IP = My PacBell IP Proxy Server IP = 198.162.0.1 SubMask = 255.25.255.240 Now everything works the way it should, I could host and join races from the gateway machine.
