GPL F2:DESPERATLY NEEDING ADVICE ON HOW TO SETUP THE LOTUS AND EAGLE?

Setting up the Lotus and Eagle for GPL F2

A player who had just discovered GPL's F2 class asked for setup advice. Others pointed to Steve Smith's F2 setup guide, explained that F2 and F3 cars have less power and grip and need a smoother style, and noted that the Lotus default gearing in patch 1.2 was too short. The thread ended with tips for learning the Nurburgring.

I've been driving GPL ever since its release and only now I discovered F2 and how fun it is, plus it seems more competitive even though there is less engine power to play with. I have based my setups for F1 mostly from Ian Lake and Wolfgang Woeger, and after mixing in other bits from some of the other fast boys out there I finally -after months- have set-ups I am happy with, for the time being anyway. But in F2 I just haven't got a clue. I have based my setups from the F1 setups and I just seem to be the slowest on the track. My technique isn't too good at the moment on a F2 race since I have only just started, and I tend to drive the car in the same way I would in F1, but I am sure my setups are not helping me. The other I tried the default GPL setup in F2, and I ended up with a more balanced car in the end. It is very frustrating to finish a lap and find out that I've gone around in 1:40s or something like that, whereas in F1 I can lap consistently (after many months of course!) in 1:28.00 sometimes with a few 1:27s when I manage to slip stream on the straight. Can anyone give me some advice on F2 or perhaps point in the right direction? Thanks. Mauricio.

I believe the F2's and the F3's are identical to the F1's (in GPL anyhow). The only difference would be the rev/rpm limiter. Your setups for the F2 should look at that! Your driving should reflect the same thinking. As far as places to download setups.. You're best off developing your own setup *after* you have mastered driving the F2's. However, sometimes a downloaded setup will help. try these.. http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/gpl/index.htm I'm also sure that Alison has some available on her pages. -- ========================================= Mike Barlow of Barlow Racing? ========================================= http://members.xoom.com/BarlowRacing/ Racing online with the help of...... The F2's all use the same engine, producing around 270HP, while the F3's all use a 140 or so HP engine. Don't get frustrated. The F2's and F3's will improve your driving. That's funny. The opposite has been my experience. The F3's seem extremely easy to drive. But it also seems to give me bad habits that don't translate well when I get back into the F1***pit, & I spin more because of it. I just started messing with the F3's last week, and yesterday I set me a new PB out at Monza of 1:54.86 with an Eagle. I've yet to get under my PB of 1:30.20 in the F1, though. -- Chuck Kandler #70 ChuckK or KS70 on Won.net K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

I think I just gave you the reason for your spinning.. You have to drive the car differently from the F1 because you don't have the power to catch the spin. That's one reason why I like the F3's, because it gives me more of a challenge then the F1's. If you do decide to give the F3 another shot, just remember that you have to think more about energy conservation and a more precise line then you do with F1. If you put these into the equation, you'll run laps as fast if not faster then the fastest F3 drivers. (side note.. it's then easier to get fast laps in F1 because what you learned in F3/F2) -- ========================================= Mike Barlow of Barlow Racing? ========================================= http://members.xoom.com/BarlowRacing/ Racing online with the help of...... I haven't tried F2 much - only raced a few online races - but with Gpl 1.2 the default setup for the Lotus is way off for gearing. At Monza for instance the car is on the rev-limiter in 5th before I cross the start/finish line and before I reach the bridge at the Ascari and I have also noticed this for the Lotus at other tracks that I have driven. I think that's the first place to start. -- Peter Ives

Yeah, the F1 is screaming because there's such a HACK driving it.<g> I'm by no means fast(or good) in F1. My PB at Monaco(F1) is 1:41, which I've recently been informed is slower than the average *F3* driver... I'm just *worse* in an F2 or F3. Well, your system is faster, your monitor is larger, and your resolution is higher(I'm running in 640x480. The combination of those may be why you're better. I'd have no problems racing you, as long as you don't run me over when you LAP me... :-) Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Well, I said I wouldn't say anymore because I tend to go on a bit when it comes to GPL ( a sad case, I know...), I still have the same enthusiasm I had months ago when it first came out. I think the first advice for the 'Ring is to forget about any sort of lap times altogether, and try first of all to stay on the track. A lot of people say it is too difficult to memorize all the turns, but I think when it comes to racing no one really memorizes any turns on any circuit, apart perhaps for when you first come across a circuit. In my case, I use to try and do 3 laps without coming off the track and at the same time trying not to be too slow. Eventually I felt I had some sort of line on the circuit, then next turn just "comes" to you. Then I started to improve on that knowing now that if I made a mistake and came off the track its because I am trying to improve my own line, not because I can't keep the car on the track. I think that you first need to be able to go around it be that at 11:00 or 8:00. Once you know what to do then its a matter of improving it in whichever way you can, if you don't start to go faster straight away, it will inevitably become easier for you to do a lap at the 'Ring at the easier it feels, the more likely you are to try and go faster and take more risks for your own standards, and get away with it. You will after a lot constructive practice have more control of the car, understand more what it is doing as you enter and exit a bend. You start to notice more details about your lap, like little bumps at the begriming, middle or exit of a bend. You will realize WHEN and where you have understeer and oversteer and what they really mean, along with other unnoticed details when you trying to gain milliseconds on a track. I never do too many laps on any circuit, unless I am enjoying it all the way, if GPL starts to get me irritated I stop, go back to it later, or the next day or even days later depending or how I feel. Being able to enjoy it as your doing it its very important, I know we all enjoy GPL but because of the difficulty involved its very easy for frustration to turn into anger when you find yourself making the same mistake in the same manner at the same spot in a given circuit. The other day after all these months I finally managed to go around monza below 1:28, I thought it would never happen, I even forgot about trying to beat my own time for a long while. But every time I lap at Monza, I always feel I could go faster, I am never satisfied with the previous lap in a race or practice session. Thoughts like "this time I will come into this 1st Lesmo as fast as the hot lappers do..." keep going around in my mind. Now I have the same attitude towards all the circuits (apart from Mexico and Monaco - I never race on those) always that desire to go faster, it has taken me months to be able to think this way. Before, my races were about trying not to spin at a certain part of a circuit, like the parabolica in Monza, I visited the grass a thousand times there, no longer though. But I find that the 'Ring is a good training ground for beginners although frustrating. Go around the 'Ring a couple of times in whichever way you can and go back to Monza and/or Spa, Monza always feels too easy after that, so short and flat... I would say I was never able to have a serious attempt at the 'Ring before I conquered Monza,Spa, and Watkins Glenn. These circuits are easy and simple (well in a sense...)enough for you to gain control of the car and consistency, but provide you with the most of the driving technique you will need to drive in GPL. I would do a few hundred laps on them before you want to venture into any of the others. Try to lap in these circuits without your tires ever squeaking, is a good way to find your line this way. Overall, constructive practice and patience as you know is the key. Be analytical about you driving and ask yourself why you're making a certain mistake, releasing the brake too suddenly before entering the prabolica? Adjusting the car inside Astari and loosing speed at the exit, coming out wide and hitting the barrier at the exit? At high speed bends like the astari a good line entering it determines how fast you will exit. One last thing, before I do any practice in the 'Ring I usually watch a replay of Ian Lake going 7:57 something and that is sure enough to inspire me, there's a lot of fast people out there and we all know the great contribution these guys are to the GPL community, but in my view the best driver around is Ian Lake, at least he seems to be the smoothest of the all, or maybe perhaps I identify with his style... I think this is the longest post I ever posted! Good luck in your quest in GPL! Mauricio.
Great post! Thanks. Based on most of the replays I've seen, it seems like you HAVE to be pushing the car(squealing the tires)... And, I've *done* a few hundred laps at Monza and Watkins. I've run several full length races at both those tracks, plus many laps of practice. I think Kyalamy is next on my 'most laps' list, then Spa. Nurburgring? I've done maybe 25 laps total... Being analytical isn't helping, or maybe I'm not being analytical ENOUGH.<g> All I know is that I'm too slow. I don't really know WHY. I compared one of my replays with a guy named Roger Hogdson(using GPLDump). It was interesting - all of my braking points were uniformly earlier. Meaning I was braking .5 sec(or whatever) earlier for EVERY corner. It surprised me. But, I really don't feel like I can brake ANY later... No problem - you have some good insights... Sorry I somehow had the impression you only just started playing GPL. I started going around the circuits trying not to let the tires squeak (a bit like driving in F2 mode, which by the way is a great way to improve your driving technique in F1, well, it works for me) once satisfied with my line then I started to push, I refer to the first few weeks playing GPL though. I suppose i was trying to say perhaps that listening to you tires is also a good way to help you determine how much traction you have left in them through a corner Well I don't really have an idea of how slow you think you are, but if you want to send me a replay of one of your best laps via e-mal, perhaps Monza. I am no expert but, I can be very critical and have a good eye for detail. You never know, I might be able to help you in some small way to find out WHY perhaps you consider yourself slow. If you send me a replay please send the car setup with it as well so I could make some sense of what you're trying to do on the track. Cheers. Mauricio Merry Xmas.
