Converted ovals and F3 drafting in GPL

Rumours of N3 tracks such as Indianapolis and Talladega converted to GPL on GSB led to talk of drafting with GPL's F3 cars. Michael Barlow and Ron Ayton described bump-drafting at Monza, and others hoped for converted road courses. A tangent covered top-speed tests of stock cars versus prototypes.

hehe.. you're missing the point. Constant drafting! you have to be really good to not only keep a draft, but to be able to pass with the draft. Then to hope that the driver using your draft can't use it to pass you. well, could be cool, but i'm more interrested with portland, toronto, sears point, cleveland, elkart lake,etc.. ( road track ). Just to compare F1 1969 times to cart times. So i could compare ICR2 physics to GPL physics. I hope GPL times will be much much slower :o) -- ============================================================================== Sebastien Tixier - Game Developer http://www.eden-studios.fr http://www.vrally.com http://www.multimania.com/hclyon ==============================================================================

At Monza, The only way to pass someone on either of the straits is if you are drafting. The Regular F3 drivers have been using Bump drafting to get away from everyone behind us :) -- ========================================= Mike Barlow of Barlow Racing? ========================================= http://members.xoom.com/BarlowRacing/ Racing online with the help of...... Surely you realize that the physics won't really compare? Also don't forget that just because your driving line (and lap times) changes significantly between sims (don't start) doesn't mean there's a flaw in the physics: the PHYSICAL cars are different, too. Just like you can't drive a Chrysler Imperial the same way you can a Corvette over the same course. I think you'll get misleading results. Besides, we already know nothing comes anywhere close to GPL's physics accuracy. Gunner

Believe me Chuck, there are ways to get these F3 cars up to very high speeds by drafting, as long as the driver has had the foresight to dial in a tall enough top gear.. I have seen Mike doing speeds a F3 car shouldn't be able to achieve at Monza, through drafting.. :))) For those of you that havn't tried drafting/racing/dicing in F3 cars, all i can say is you don't know what fun you are missing out on.!! "Yes", it does require skill to be able to draft and dice cleanly, because the gaps between the regulars in F3 racing is usually inches, not yards, but it is well worth it... Cheers, Ron

I'm totaly agree with you. Okey, ICR2 physics is not realist as GPL ones, but lap times, acceleration and speed are quite realist. The GPL times, acceleration and speed are realist too, plus physics is. So normally, GPL on portland must has slower laps than ICR2. If not, well, maybe, ICR2 tracks have not the same scale than GPL ones. Thus,it would be interesting to calculate the length tracks (and easy ). Just drive at 22,5 mph ( 10m/s ), take time, and calculate track length. Time in second * 10. it will give aproximate length in meter. -- ============================================================================== Sebastien Tixier - Game Developer http://www.eden-studios.fr http://www.vrally.com http://www.multimania.com/hclyon ==============================================================================

I got you. It's just that I'm not into nascar style racing. I want to drive on the limit of the car, not just keeping the pedal to the metal hoping the car would go a little faster :) Hena

*Bump drafting*?? In GPL? Boy, if that don't sound like fun! I may have to set me up an F3 driver profile & start practicing, so I can join you guys. Seems dangerous in GPL though. The way they like to sometimes over-react when you touch something. I'm sure it takes a real light touch. Richard Petty would love this stuff. ;-) -- Chuck Kandler #70 ChuckK or KS70 on Won.net K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

The CART Champ cars have had a great deal of their downforce taken away. On a course like Portland, you "should" see faster times from the Champ cars, but if you really want to see the difference go back about 5 years, those cars could drive through the tunnel at Monaco, on the ceiling/upside down. Same for the F1 cars. Go back 10 years to the 1000+hp Turbo cars. The comparison I've always wanted to see would be to compare the lap times at a large track(Indy, Talladega) between open wheel variants and the closed wheeled GTP, LMS cars. I have heard the open tires on the champ cars produce big gobs of drag. The old tiny-motored AAR Toyota Eagle IMSA cars were thought to be faster than Indy cars of the same time period...It would make for an interesting article. dave henrie

Continuing the off topic thread of speed. Road and Track (I think) Did a speed test between a Winston Cup Car and a Porsche GTP car. They ran the cars on a giant test track, looking for all out speed. I know the WC car was the Late Tim Richmond's Folger's Monte Carlo, the Porsche... I can't recall. But anyway.. this was done. Maybe a look on the R&T site will help, or someone else remembers this issue. Later, Brit - The Artist formerly known as the Mocker

They never could remove enough downforce/drag from the GTP car to get it to top speed, nor was it clear they had tall enough gears. They also had extra drag from the too-wide tires. IIRC, there wasn't that much HP difference between them. -dB
