Upcoming Aussie touring car game and the appeal of Bathurst

Posters discussed Torus's upcoming Australian touring car game, expected in December, and explained why Mount Panorama at Bathurst is revered, with its long straights and steep mountain section. Australians debated safety, history and in-car camera innovations there, and someone offered a GP2 version of the track that others said was inaccurate.

Some time ago I believe that I saw a game that was being developed based on Aussie touring cars and in particular Bathurst. Anyone any info?
Macca 30 Nov 1999#506548
There was a game released a few years ago which only had bathurst, and could be classed as the worst ever game. You had to pit every lap as you couldnt last two laps without running outta fuel
Krunc 30 Nov 1999#506549
I've also been waiting for "Dick Johnson's Touring Car Challenge" from Torus too. Should be out soon. Also great news is that TOCA 3 will have Bathurst and I think with V8's Woo Hoo!!!
: Some time ago I believe that I saw a game that was being developed based on : Aussie touring cars and in particular Bathurst. OK, I'm dying to know. What is so great about Bathurst. The Aussies go on and on about this track. Can someone point me to a web site that will give me a good impression of what is so special about this mythical place? Stephen
I once saw a TV report about a touring car race there. The track is apparently quite long (over 6 km), has a long straight and some twisty uphill/downhill sections, with some similarities to the Nuerburgring Nordschleife or Laguna Seca. -- Matthias Flatt

Two long straights with a tight climb up the side of a hill(er mountain!) The allure of Mount Panorama(where Bathhurst is run) is kinda like Australia's LeMans or America's Ind...er Daytona. My first exposure was on Speedvision. It was the only place where the Super- tourers of England and America joined up with the Aussies for a 6 hour run. However in Ozland itself, the V8 cars seem to be more popular. dave henrie

Just checked this link and got a 404. Torus are the developers though and it is supposed to be released this year. Andrew.
I spoke to the distributor yesterday. They are saying Dec 15th. Dont hold your breath though, it keeps getting put back 1 week at a time. > Just checked this link and got a 404. Doesn't anybody have a good search engine like metacrawler?? http://www.hsv.com.au/racing/tracks/bathurst97_map.htm Pit straight is at the bottom. The track is relatively flat til Griffin's bend and then the "climb" begins. Somewhere near the two parks at the upper right the course begins to decend until it hits the long Conrod straight. Perhaps it isn't the course so much as the racers who have made the course famous. dave henrie One Ozzie describe the difference between the Super Tourers and the V8's the 2.0 litre cars seemed to crawl around the lower open portions of the track although he thought they did quite well in the hills, but the V8's really shine on those monster straights.

That Mount Panorama section is awesome. A bit like 2km of the Nordschleife. Incidentally, one of the Aussie TV stations pioneered in-car video cameras for the "Great Race" in the 1980's - some of their stuff is yet to be bettered, and beats the F1 in-car footage hands-down. I always remember an in-car interview with Peter Brock as he manhandled his car over the mountain. He didn't seem to mind answering questions either! - Michael

It would, without a doubt, be one of the best tracks that could EVER be made available as a add-on for GPL. It has everything that a good track needs, including long straights for drafting, a Laguna Seca corkscrew type dipper, sweepers, 90 degree turns, switch backs and good (massive) elevation changes... If this track was included in GPL, it would soon become the most popular on-line track ever devised for GPL.. Cheers, Ron
Leaky_Valve 01 Dec 1999#506800
Steve, it's probably the closest to a "Spa" type circuit that it's possible to get. In fact, I think the elevation change (from lowest to highest points) is the greatest in the world for a racing circuit. It has a wonderful downhill straight (Conrod Straight) that, since the 1970s, has been emasculated somewhat with the inclusion of a sweeping "chicane". This straight, in its original form, was awe-inspiring and it was great to watch the drum-braked cars of the 1950s try to slow down for Murrays Corner at the bottom! There are some sites around with details of Mount Panorama. It is, incidentally, a public road for 99% of the year. BK.

Sorry Tim...I don't need to rain on your parade, but that is just a bit over-the-top, mate! Indianapolis is probably more deply ingrained as part of Americas culture than Mount Panorama is with us. The circuit has only been used for the 500 mile/1000 kilometre event since the early 1960s (Phillip Island hosting the Armstrong 500 prior to the move to Bathurst) and has only been regularly televised since the late 1960s. The Indianapolis 500 has been around for a few more decades! > It is a part of > Australian culture, proabably more so than Watkins or Indianapollis is to the US, > or Monza is to the Italians. I think they were old developement screen shots over a year old. Can't see them on the site any more.
Mitch Gibb 02 Dec 1999#507032
Yes, in-car cameras were pioneered by ATN7 for use in the Bathurst 1000. The first was around the late 70's where they used the remote controlled shoulder mounted news camera with a radio link to a helicopter above and then to trackside broadcast area. A milestone in motor racing IMO. I might be biased being an Aussie, but Bathurst has produced many local legends on both 2 and 4 wheels and unfortunately has claimed a lot of lives due to it's high speed nature. Pretty dangerous, so much so in fact, that our premier open wheeler formula, Formula Holden, will not race there. Mitch
Leaky_Valve 02 Dec 1999#507033
Actually pioneered in the 1970's, Michael. Network Seven popped a fixed camera into Williamsons Toyota Celica.

Mitch, could you please list the people who've died at Bathurst? (excluding Denny Hulme, of course, as his death was due to a heart attack, not a race-related incident).

On some TV footage I saw that there are armcos pretty close to the track, and trees right behind the armco. How about cutting down some of the trees and widening the run-off areas? -- Matthias Flatt

What an excellent idea! Hey...whilst we're at it, lets concrete the whole area and turn it into an oval. Better still, how about we just don't use it at all seeing that, WOW!....motor racing must be a dangerous pastime. > On some TV footage I saw that there are armcos pretty close to the > track, and trees right behind the armco. I'm sure what could have been done, has been done. Run-off areas are hard to reclaim especially when it is a steep embankment (the side of the mountain), or a cutting in solid rock. I've ridden and driven around it (it's a public road), the rapid change in altitude has to be experienced to be believed both on and off the track. Conrod Straight is another problem as it is long and undulating. A touring car at nearly 300kph will lift the rear wheels even with downforce. I would think a light flat bottomed open wheeler has the potential to flip in these circumstances. Modification to the straight was made in 87 (I think) after a driver died in that years touring car race - but she's still dangerous. Mitch

There is a GP2 Mount Panarama track that is around. It was quite good to race on. I gives a better understanding of what the track's like than all the TV footage I've watched over the years. I don't know where to contact the author but I can post it here if that's allowed. If it's not then I can email it to you. The same guy's also done Phillip Island, Sandown and the Melbourne GP circuit.
From the little I've seen on tv it looks like one of the great tracks of the world. I would be very interested in trying it. If you could find the url, or post it to alt.binaries.simulators.autos, and then let us know, it would be much appreciated. Thanks. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.

OK, so what would you think the outcome would be if we asked EVERY american citizen what Indianapolis was, what's the general layout of the track, and some history of the track or great races there, compared to asking every Australian about Bathurst?? Maybe that would be a better comparision!!
R McAuliff 05 Dec 1999#507487
Only problem is that the track was very poorly put together. (Assuming you dl'd the same one that I did). When I drove the track, I thought it seemed very odd, and then I loaded it into Paul Hoad's track editor, and realised that it was completely off. Missed out about 3 or 4 corners, all the elevation changes, and also the "driving on the mountain" scenery ie. it was like driving on a track in a paddock. The sandown track was very well done, very close to the real thing, but the Bathurst track needed some adjusting to give justice to the real deal. I'd be interested in trying your one out, to compare with the old one that I had. It wasn't too bad to race on, actually, just that it didn't resemble Bathurst!! BTW, a rather incredible experience would be the Bathurst and GPL combo!! Dealing with the Dipper would have to seriously test the best of them. Not to mention the sweeper before Caltex Chase.... It certainly has, the only other Australian circuits most non-Oz people could name are Melbourne and Philip Island because of current F1 races. - Michael (UK)
