Taking the Monaco chicane flat out in GPL

A player struggling at Monaco asked how to get through the harbour chicane. Experienced drivers advised lining up from the middle of the track, steadying the rear over the crest, taking the chicane under power and looking well beyond the corner. Others discussed braking for Tabac and changing the driving view.

The chicane is actually a slight right hand turn as I recall. Hmmm, maybe it's left. Funny I can't remember. Try both. :) Just turn the wheel ever so slightly and take it flat out. You can try raising the rideheight or increasing bump ***s to get over the curb smoothly. It's a *** to learn, but easy to master. In other words, once you figure it out, you'll never have trouble there again. Good luck.

...I remember asking the same question! The best hint I was given was to look down the track to where you want to be, not at the walls on either side of the chicane. Your hands follow your eyes, and all that. The other Zen-esque hint for Monaco that I've found helpful is (can't remember who came up with this, they're probably in a monastery in Tibet by now): don't think that the track is too small for the car; rather, think that the car is too big for the track.

I have more problems with the Tabac corner which follows the chicane. I can never quite make myself believe how much you have to slow down to make that corner! The same applies to those first gear corners from Mirabeau to the tunnel - it feels like you're crawling round. - Michael

Just remember Monaco is NOT a real fast track.... Do you watch the REAL race on TV? Want to go faster? Drive like it's raining... GRIN Tom
You need to take it just a bit easy over the hill before the chicane, so that your rear doesn't become instable/disturbed. You need to control the rear of the car before you can take it flat out. When your rear is loaded (you're on the throttle, right?), you can power through without thinking of going off the throttle. And you need some angle to get through, but not much. And look far forward, don't get duped by the frightening hay bale and fence. And when you manage to take it on the limit, you'll get a light slide exiting, use this opportunity to wave to the beautiful redhead on the right side... ---Asgeir---

If you have examined this corner closely, you'll see that the road goes downhill during the braking zone. The car gets a bit light when going over the brow, and this is what makes the grip going bad. Do the majority of the braking before the downhill, then ease off a bit while "jumping" over the brow, before braking hard as the wheels get fully loaded again. If you do this properly, you'll be able to go on the throttle extremely early and heavily, and you'll carry a lot of speed through to the gas station. And that's another difficult corner... ---Asgeir---

For me, part of what makes it so difficult is that I seem to get a bit of a slow down in fps just before the little hump... I'm not sure why, caus there doesn't seem to be too much going on graphics wise, but oh well. That's not the only reason, mind you, its a *** of a section, but it certainly doesn't help. I tend to touch the brakes just before the hump then just cruise through... i know I could take it faster, but not with any sort of consistency. (missing it once is far worse than going through a little slow 15 times) i'm doing around 1:30, don' tknow if that's quick or not. > You need to take it just a bit easy over the hill before the chicane, so > that your rear doesn't become instable/disturbed. LOL... ;-) Asgeir forgot to mention you have to let go of conventional wisdom (use the whole track) and line up the chicane from the middle of the track (or even slighty more left than that). You do not need to turn much at all and, if you do as Asgeir says and keep your tail in check over the crest, you can take it under full power. full power? from teh tunnel all the way through? Hmmm.... must practice monaco..... speedracer (i just noticed the book says the brabham is the best choice for monaco any thoughts?) No, you have to lift for the crest of the hill, but on a light fuel load this is just a confidence lift. IMO, to drive the chicane with any level of consistency at all, it has to be done under power. Oh, eh... and make sure the car doesn't bottom out too heavily or you'll lose it on the exit. Another tip is to set the car up to only use 4 gears instead of 5... that takes off about 3 tenths a lap (and about 600 shifts per race). That being said, I'm personally only capable of 1m30's, but I lose the time elsewhere (notably at St. Devote and in the *** section). Brabham's are very good at Monaco (mostly because they're small and pack a lot of grunt), so are the Ferrari's. As far as the Lotus goes, it's sure nimble enough for Monaco, but it's power has nowhere to go and it's frangibility works against it. Jan. ---- > full power? > from teh tunnel all the way through? Don't let your eyes become fixed on the chicane itself - look well beyond to where you are going. This helps me a lot. Cheers, Andrew.

Wow, that's where I'm best. I love popping over the hill at *** 'cause I know I'm going to kick ass until the tunnel. Don McCorkle

For me it helps to change my view. I set the drivingView variable in the player.ini to '12'. So i can see the nose of the car without loosing the feeling of driving inside (like the nintendo-view). You'll loose the mirrors and the ability to look right or left. Nils

I pray each time I approach the chicane. It works! I remember this problem from ICR2 at the Australian track - from the driving style that chicane is pretty much the same as the one in Monaco. I thought it would help to watch the AI doing it, but in either game that doesn't work. Mea***er
