I finally was able to see the movie, "Grand Prix" with James Garner for the
first time tonight. The best race film ever and a must see for owners of
Grand Prix Legends. After seeing this movie I appreciate the effort Papyrus
put into GPL. In this show they could be at a certain track and after just
seeing one corner or straightaway owners of GPL would know what track these
drivers were racing at. Papyrus really duplicated these tracks extremely
well. I just have to laugh at all the race programs that came out before and
after GPL boasting of exact tracts and all. GPL really did it. If anyone has
never seen this movie and own GPL or just enjoy racing, it is a must see. I
really enjoyed seeing all the race cars that I am now familiar with from the
game.
Fans praise the film Grand Prix and the Monza banking
A first-time viewer praised the 1966 film Grand Prix as a must for GPL owners. Others noted that the Monza banking shown in the film had last been used for a Grand Prix in 1961, mentioned a GPL season based on the film, and discussed finding the film in PAL or on DVD.
Automated summary.
Great movie. Pretty much a soap opera, but the race scenes are absolutely
extraordinary. And the sound was incredible! This really gives me a new
appreciation for GPL.
One question though: What happened to the elevated portion of Monza that was
shown in the movie? Was it closed off before '67 or is it just a limitation of
the GPL engine?

It is a classic that probably won't ever be matched. I can't help but think
that the upcoming Sylvester Stallone movie on F1 (out in 2001?) will be a
huge letdown, even with the 10s/100s of millions they will spend on it.
I dragged my parents all the way from Anderson to Indianapolis (about
40 mi) so I could see this movie in Cinerama at the Circle Theater,
which was the only theater in the state equipped to handle it. It was
fantastic, but it's still fantastic on the little screen as well.
Even for those who aren't GPL fanatics, it's probably the best racing
film of all time and well worth a watch.

The last time the banking at Monza was used for a GP was 1961 (somebody
correct me if I'm wrong...my memory isn't what it used to be). It most
certainly wasn't used in 1967 -- and for the same reason the movie
depicts: it was just too rough. To counteract the G-forces of the Monza
banking and stop the cars from bottoming out on the seams and ripples
(poorly cast concrete), the long-travel suspensions of the late
50s-early 60s had to be snubbed down right to the stops, and the cars
were simply unmanageable at speed everywhere else on teh track. The
drivers protested long and loud, and threatened to boycott any proposed
race at Monza that included the banking. Monza's management, at the
urging of the Italian Auto Club, gave in.
Frankenheimer thought the banking was just too cool an element to leave
out, so he got the weeds growing out of the seams trimmed, and shot some
footage on the banks, including, of course, the unfortunate demise of
Yves Montand. If you watch closely, you'll see that none of the actual
race footage includes the banking -- only the movie cars are on it (and
the F2 cars running at reduced speeds didn't have the bottoming problems
of F1 cars at full chat).

Talking about that movie... Does anyone know if it's also available in
PAL? I've only seen it for sale in NTSC.

To add to your fun some very kind soul made a GPL season for the film
'Grand Prix' you can race against Scott Stoddard, Pete Arron et al.
It's great !!
Also the British mag Autosport treats the film with real respect, they
used to have a series called 'Race of My life' where a driver recounts
well you can probably guess.... Anyway one of the series was by Pete
Arron on the Italian Grand Prix. The whole thing was totally spot on.

If you can get hold of October's "Motor Sport" magazine somehow, there
is an excellent feature on how the banking is today. Very overgrown :-(

I've been looking around for a PAL version as well.
I gave up and went to Amazon in the end, and got the NTSC version.
My VCR (only 100 British Pounds) can cope no problem, most PAL VCRs these
days can.
However, you also need a TV that can do NTSC playback (its sometimes called
PAL60).
Unfortunally my own portable is about 10 yrs old and can't. Good job the
main widescreen TV in the living room can!!! ;) HMMMMMMMM Buy the
widescreen version. VERY TASTY!!!!!
Gavin (Now looking for a small widescreen TV for his room to replace his old
TV ;) )

The banking was last used in 1961. Although Grand Prix was based on 1966,
the director used it in the film for dramatic effect EG the flying lesson
over the top of the banking into the trees.

There are some rumours that the oval track of Monza is going to be
demolished.
However not everybody have the same opinion, so I think it will be remain in
its place just as a "historic" memory of the Parco di Monza.

Yes, there's been a "Save The Banking " campaign on for about a year,
with petition and fund raisers all over, including the Goodwood Festival.

I have for sale, a widescreen VHS copy of "Grand Prix", in excellent

I believe that it may have been 1965, Bart....the last year of the 1.5 litre
period. It was used for other types of racing after that year but not for
F1.

The banking at Monza was last used in F1 in 1961. Frankenheimer just added it for dramatic effect.

Jan, Frankenheimer made a movie in 1998 called Ronin, available on DVD. It's
not a racing flick, it's a spy thriller in the greatest classic form. But it
does contain about 20 minutes of the best car scenes I've ever seen. Besides
one of the best scripts ever and superb acting, it boasts action scenes shot
without the assistance of computer editing. Frankenheimer chose to shoot the
chases and high dives and explosions *live* to "heighten the level of
reality." Frankenheimer said, "We're really going to raise the bar. So the
next time somebody wants to do one of these things, they are going to think
twice about it."
They did it. They really pulled it off. Could be you'll never see car work
like this again. Top notch. Two thumbs up. A jaw dropper. Speed freaks fix.
Best 19 bucks I've ever spent.

I heard Frankenheimmer say they shot the car chase scenes in Rodin the same way
they shot them in GRAND PRIX!!!
James Larson
Nope, Bart was right, it was 1961 :-)

That movie was by Frankenheimer too? Wow, never noticed that. Indeed
one of the best car chases ever filmed!!

thanks for the hint. I must admit I'm a very poor basterd: No DVD either
(yet). Is this Ronin-thing also available on video?
