NASCAR Thunder 2004 demo released
Andrew reported the belated NASCAR Thunder 2004 demo and said he liked its AI, force feedback and sounds. Most of the thread argued over BitTorrent security and dead download links, as the demo appeared to have been pulled from EA's FTP site. Richard III bought the full game and found it decent.

I have played a few races on it, and I have to say I quite like it. It
leaves me wishing for a Papy/EA hybrid with NR2003's graphics and
sound engine, and NT2003's AI, force feedback and sound samples.

Thanks, worth a try. How is the controller setup?

My browser and 3mbit connection can handle a download just fine, thank you

The Florida url worked for me just now but at 30kb/sec on cable it is
too slow so dumped it. I'll *never* install that peer to peer crap
either.

Why? He can always get it later when the traffic is lower. Bittorrent
is a compromise to security. You think it;'s smart opening up your PC

on my PC for the same reason.

If there's anything on your PC that's so sensitive that you can't afford to
compromise it then you're an idiot to connect it to the internet in the
first place.

Gee, how about trying the obvious and going to ftp.ea.com? It seems
everyone has forgotten the ol' tried and true file transfer protocol. I
opened a console window and had it downloaded in no time. Fast and easy and
no security problems.

No, you are an idiot for using something like Bittorent and thinking
you are safe. I have nothing to hide but I don't want my setup ruined
and have to do a reinstall because of some trojan placed or other
malicious prog placed on my PC. Anyway, I use a mobile rack so can
easily lock out one HDD from the internet and allow another one on.
I'm just smarter than you. Hehe.

I realise that I'm taking a slight risk when downloading any software or
opening ports on my firewall. I also realise that I'm taking a risk by
using Windows and connecting to the internet. However, it's a calculated
risk and I don't let paranoia cause me to cringe in fear. It's ok to warn
people of the risks but your posts seem to verge on spreading unnecessary
fear.

I went to avault.com and they said they pulled the demo by request
from EA. But maybe that was an older version? Doesn't matter now as I
went out and bought the game from EB yesterday. Seems decent and I
like the career mode. EA added a career mode to NHL2004 this year too
which I also like because it adds another dimensionn to the game. Just
wish they would put in a save mode because I usually end up crashing
before I can finish the full race. Thunder 2004 looks real good to me
so far and is a bargain at $49.99 CAD, but I can't find a replay mode.
Maybe I missed it but it looks like there isn't one. Graphics are more
gritty than the Papyrus sims which I actually prefer but looks like I
need to turn on FSAA even at 1280x1024 res.

Unfortunately (from what I have seen in the demo) it looks like it
needs FSAA even after you have turned it on! There is something odd
with that game.

Oh well, it looks decent and runs well with a full pack at 1280x1024
on my P4 1.8ghz cpu and R9800pro. Edges are a bit jagged though and
that is somethig they should improve in the next version. My
prediction is that ISI/EA will keep improving this series until it is
better than the Papyrus series. Already the career mode makes it more
exciting and fun than the Papy series for me.

There is . . . but you have to turn in on in the options menu.

Yea, but he is right. There is very little to be gained by making the swap
file fixed. I've tried the swap file in every possible configuration and
have just seen no benefit to making it fixed in any games. Sometimes gamers
take the tweaking route too seriously.

Yes, it's a carry-over from the old Win95 days where people were trying to
play games with 16MB of RAM and sometimes tweaking the swap file had a
(barely) noticeable effect. On today's PCs it's a redundant tweak.

I still see some people recommend old tweaks that are just bad advice
for any PC running Win98 and up. Like 'conservativeswapfile=1'.
