I could have sworn I saw and address to a site that would change the name of
DirectX 7 back to an older number so it could be covered it up with DirectX
6 again.
I should've written it down because now I want to get rid of DX7 and put DX6
back in. For some reason I've got controller problems that popped up after
I installed DX7. (Sidewinder)
Thanks in advance...

Ain't hard to do. Just back everything up, reboot with your cd-rom drivers on a
boot disk, reformat, re-install. I do it about every two months (Paint Shop
Pro's 60-day reminder tracks my time ;) and it usually only takes about half a
Saturday.

Follow the directions.
Run the version changer, reinstall win98 (if you running it) and then
reinstall direct6.1 . Worked fine for me.

that is what I did. It works fine. Perhaps you used something
different. I've reinstalled windows 98 so many times one more
isn't going to hurt :)

Here is the readme:
Notes on DXBackdate, 22-OCT-99
Please note: DirectX 7 replaces some Win 98 system files which will be
left unaltered by earlier DX versions. If you use DXBackdate to force
a reinstallation of DX 7, this isn't a problem. For a real backdate
(i.e. installation of DX 6 over DX 7) you will need a Win 98
^^^^^^
installation CD (and roughly half an hour).
This version of DXBackdate hasn't been checked for Windows 2000 as
this OS doesn't seem to work properly with anything earlier then the
DX 7 files supplied.

I apologise profusely to all, then, but when I ran the program I didn't
reinstall Windows and all went ok.

Why the need for some "version changer" if you're going to reinstall
Win98??? Reinstalling Win98 will remove any version of DirectX without
needing any "version changer".
Sounds a bit like snake oil to me.
Trips
Trips,
It is not a "fresh install". If that were the case then no version
change would be required.I didn't want to do a fresh install since you
lose all your windows settings, programs, etc. However with a refresh
install, some modules will not be written over if they are of a later
version. Hence I think having the directx dlls marked as older allow
them to be refreshed. In all it is just a general pain in the butt...
Jeff
Well, whether it works or not it's not a bad idea to do a fresh reinstall every
so often, regardless. I almost always notice that Win98 boots several seconds
faster and overall performance is better.

You too, huh?
I have a SideWinder Pro USB that used to work great until I installed DX7.
Now, it works ok in the Game control panel, but all my software can't access
it correctly.
I've also heard that the SideWinder software 4.0 (which, oddly, STILL isn't
available from Microsoft's web site) that comes with that cheap new MS non
force-feedback wheel is broken under DX7.
I just re-imaged my system, and I'm sure as hell not installing DX7.
Unfortunately, I believe the new GeForce cards require it for full
performance :(

You need to be introduced to DriveImage 2.0. Badly :)
