NL Questions--Papy or NASCAR experts please!!

A couple of NASCAR Legends questions for the real pros.: 1) When did the Alabama track get re-named to Talladega? Was Talladega painted on the walls in 1970? 2) The NL game manual refers to a 48-race season...does anyone have (or have a link to) a race calendar from 1970--and I mean a regular calendar or schedule, not necessarily a NL one. 3) I can understand why Daytona is not there, but what about Asheville, Columbia, Hickory, Kingsport, Savannah, Trenton and W. ***ia? Weren't all of these (some of them quite interesting) used in 1970? We have lots of tracks for N3, so??????? Are there others I don't know about? Thanks for any help and enlightenment. Marc. P.S. RIP Greg Moore....fellow Canuck who aside from being a great racer embodied all of the good qualities we like to think of as Canadian, a good sportsman and a gentleman. -- **************************************************************************** Marc Collins Computers will never equal humans until they make mistakes and blame them on other computers. ****************************************************************************

Track was renamed sometime in the mid 80's I believe, and yes it did have the Talladega on the wall in 1970. I don't know of one on the net and I really don't feel like typing the entire thing out right now.<G> If you can't find one let me know and I will put one together for you.

In the years around 1970 NASCAR ran points races on all kinds of tracks, including dirt tracks, running sometimes even on weeknights. One track I know they ran on (but I don't specifically remember if they ran on it 1970 or not--but I think they did) was Smoky Mountain Raceway, a half-mile high banked dirt track (that was really closer to 5/8 mile) about forty miles south of Knoxville, TN. The track was located in a small "holler" where I used to hunt arrowheads as a child. I think it was David Pearson who said it was "the roughest damn track I ever drove on." Buddy Baker has a nice story or two about his experiences at the track on one of the NASCAR 50th Anniversary tapes. One of the original promoters of SMR went to Talledega and played a big part in making that track what it is today, I think. I'd like to see this track and some of the others you mention, but I imagine the research effort would be a killer. Jerry Morelock
Thanks Scott. I don't want you to type so much...but was really just hoping there might be a net link to one somewhere. As for the not included tracks, which you avoided replying to, I can understand your reluctance. However, I would be satisfied regardless of the reply: i.e., licensing cost too much; too much research involved; couldn't be bothered because most people haven't heard of them anyway....whatever. I just prefer to know these things, but I won't get bent out of shape if you have to reserve issuing a statement on the matter. Thanks again for putting up with the highly excitable crowd here in r.a.s. Marc.

Papy....if you make an expansion pack or a new version of NL or anything. PLEASE I BEG OF YOU...Include Trenton!! I'm to young to have ever seen the track in real life but i used to live in NJ not more than 30 mins from Trenton. If you could make this track in any of its forms (preferably the mile or 1.5 track) because that way it has the "reverse dogleg" in the back stretch. Chris

Make that another vote for Trenton. I remember my father taking my brother and I there to watch the qualifying. Can't recall the year. Seems like 1968 or 1969. Anyway, I'd like to have Trenton in NL.

I had always thought there was a race at Islip Speedway on Long Island during the 70 season. I guess I am wrong. Where did you get this list, I would like to find out when Islip was last on the Grand National circuit, also when Bridge Hampton , a road course also on Long Island, was on the tour. TIA Brit -- The Artist formerly known as the Mocker
I think they skipped Islip in '70, but used it in '69 and '71!??!? A .2 mile oval--that would be fun!!!! Marc.

Two races at Maryville, TN in 1970--that's Smoky Mtn Raceway. I'm glad my memory's not completely gone. That track's still there, BTW, but it's by no means in the same configuration it was in 1970. As I mentioned in another post, in 1970 it was a high-banked dirt track--banks as high or higher than Bristol, I believe. Since then it's been paved, unpaved, and turned into a bull ring. In it's day, the races at SMR were as big a deal as those at Bristol, and if it had continued with the right management, we could very easily be talking about SMR today instead of Bristol. A race at SMR was surely an experience to remember. Jerry Morelock
