Flame warSpoiler row over Hakkinen's 1999 world championship

A post titled with Mika Hakkinen's title-winning result angered fans who had taped the race and wanted no spoilers. A long argument followed between those demanding SPOILER tags and those saying anyone avoiding results should stay off the newsgroup, with insults on both sides.

I'm not a huge F1 fan but try to watch the races each week. I can tell from what I've watched "crying Finn" fits him perfectly! Gary

Thanks very much you ***ing idiot. There i no need for me to watch the video now that I know the score is there. Jeez...after staying away from the radio all morning. There is always some *** who doesn't know how to use a spoiler in the header!!! Mark

Thanks... I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.... Gonna be alot more fun now.

yea, and if that dope, coulthard could have stayed on the track, they would've won the manufacturers championship as well. what a moron. Rik Anthrax - - "trust the government?? what are you, some kind of moron?"

There's ALWAYS someone who posts the results, especially in a motorsport group, so at least half of that "***" award must be claimed by yourself for screwing it up for yourself. Cheers! John

The general convention is to put the word "SPOILER" in the heading as well you know John, so why are you attacking me with your flames? Had one beer too many last night perhaps? Maybe it's the lack of sleep that is making you grouchy! Maybe next time, I'll not bother going for a sunday morning walk in the park with my dog either, just in case I run into a bunch of people sitting on the park bench, celebrating the win with a bottle of cider!
>That's right! >Damn we're proud of him. As well you should be. I'm a Brit, and Hakk is my fave. I love his sense of humour, his fallability, his humility, and his ability to cope with pressure when it -really- counts. Winning the championship in the final round from behind. Schuey ever done that? Don't like DC, can't stand Irv, but was overjoyed Herbert came goos towards the end of this season. Hoping my fave rally Driver can complete his foursome, Mark Reading, UK

I usually choose my words more carefully, but I too recorded the race in the early morning hours and planned on watching it this evening after the Cart race. But now thanks to this dumb ass, there is no reason to. IN THE FUTURE,USE THE WORDS: F1 SPOILER. And the last time I looked, this was R.A.S. Again, thanks for spoiling it for the rest of us. I only hope one day we can return the favor. Joel Willstein

Do you have no consideration for others? Wake up, the world does not revolve around yourself The tiniest amount of thoughtfulness and you would not have ruined the GP for the poor guys who had to work when the GP was on live. Writing F1 Spoiler in the header surely would not have been a hard thing to do?
LOL, You guys crack me up. You KNOW guys do this every week, and still come here. HELLO anyone home! Have to agree. I got in this morning after a long, hard night at work (do they make any other kind?), collapsed in front of the TV while the kettle boiled, turned the TV on without thinking...and there was the end of ITV's live coverage. What I saw straight away was three drivers sat at a table being interviewed... told me everything I didn't want to know in an instant! No-one to blame but myself :-) Andrew McP

Let's be clear here Mark - YOU flamed, I only pointed out how daft it was to come online before knowing the result (call it obvious, call it common-sense..). Yes, people in a Utopian world would put "SPOILER", but in _this_ world they don't, so you make your own choices. Maybe - if that's the kind of area you live in , I don't know. I do occupy the same Usenet as you however, and I wouldn't frequent r.a.s. if I didn't want to know a result. Cheers! John

On the contrary. Living in close proximity (Within 10 miles of Woking), I happen to be rather happy to see the "Mac" men do their stuff again. We had a great time last year watching Mikka and DC blast their mounts around the streets of the town in celebration at the end of the season. Watching them jump the traffic lights was quite amusing. If there is an Irish connection (and as it happens, I do have emerald Isle *** within me) My allegiances would lie with Mr Jordan and not some beligerant upstart who got lucky and benefited from another drivers misfortune! As far as individual drivers are concerned, I'm afraid to say that I'm pretty indifferent to the majority of them these days. They simply come and go, failing to inspire me in the same manner that their forerunners did! I guess that some of these sanitised corporate drivers will be remembered and revered by you and your kind for xenophobic reasons. Still, as has been pointed out to me in no uncertain terms by others who have posted in this thread, It was nieve of me to think that people would follow honourable conventions such as using spoilers in their headers. I concede this point and a lesson has been learned. I suppose that as long as Usenet exists, there will always be ignorant ***s fully able, willing and eager to***things up for others. Will you morons please stop posting race results before a huge chunk of the readers here have had a chance to watch the race for themselves. How many times does this have to be said??????? Think about someone other than yourself just for a few moments. Marc.
Terry Welch 01 Nov 1999#500781
Geez! Whatta buncha crybabies! Get a damned life and stop putting all of your emotions and energy into watching races on TV, then flaming anybody who completely unintentionally gave away the "secret"! So Lauri didn't know or care to put SPOILER in the subject.... Anybody going into one of these newsgroups should be aware that it's like playing in traffic, and not everyone will be driving with the same rules in mind. Also, if the only reason you watch F1 races is to see who won, and get mad and refuse to watch if you already know the winner, why the hell do you pay any attention to racing at all? Just go see your bookie and then wait for the result, win or lose. For that matter (tongue in cheek here) just watch to see who is leading after the first few corners, and you will usually know who wins. Lighten up, please...... I agree with you, I don't think it's fair to post this kind of stuff on this NG. Because if you wanted to know who won, all you have to do is check the F1 internet web sites. But, you have to take some of the blame yourself, I live in the US (tape delay 13 of the 16 races), and I don't get on to this newsgroup until after the race, because of stuff like this.
Graeme Nash 01 Nov 1999#500785
Aah, you're just pissed off because the mighty Bromley beat Aldershot last week :-) (private joke) -- Cheers! Graeme Nash PS I agree - putting "spoiler" in the header should be a common courtesy even if perhaps people shouldn't check usenet until after the race...

Exactly... you don't want to know --> don't come here. Jan./ me? -I don't care. I do not watch racing to see "my favourite" win. ----
I don't take any blame because I now do the same thing you do--I avoid reading r.a.s. posts until after I have watched the race. It doesn't change the fact that it is inconsiderate to post results in the header of a message. Marc.

Any serious fan like myself will also be seen at historic racing events, club meetings, local motorcross meetings as well as the bigger meetings, in sun rain or hail. I for one am not an ambulance driver but there was another reason why I was unable to watch the race live. I won't say why for I do not feel the need to justify myself to people who make assumptions without enquiring as to real facts. why would they be on a newsgroup when they could have been Erm. Any SERIOUS fan stayed up and watched the race live. If a person absolutely couldn't watch it live (say, an ambulance driver on the late shift), why would they be on a newsgroup when they could have been watching their tape? Something does not compute. I dont want to add to the argument but you should have guessed that someone would post the results, or comment on the race. I didnt watch the race cause here in the US the coverage bows donkey ear. I saw it on Tuesday afternoon, and I specifically did not visit any racing websites or NGs for fear of getting the results. But I did get the results before watching the race... who knew northernlight.com )my start page) would post the results. Oh well, at least I knoew enough to stay away from auto racing news groups.
