Notable threadFirst impressions of NASCAR Legends and its spotter

Uncle Fester bought NASCAR Legends at release and gave mixed first impressions. Posters asked why a 1970 sim had a spotter, and Papyrus's Charlie Heath explained that it was added late because multiplayer races without one proved too hard. Others reported color problems with imported N2 and N99 tracks, and Scott Sanford of Papyrus answered period-detail questions about the Union 76 branding.

Hi all Having heard it here first, that NL was out, I just *had*to drop everything & run on out to pick up a copy. EB-$45 bux. Got it home & fired it right up. Full install-170MB. Compared to a lot of titles out there today, especially in the flight category, that isn't bad at all. Everything goes smooth without a hitch. Of course! This is Papy we're talkin about here! Intro movie is cool. I could swear I saw a lot of that footage on ABC Wide World of Sports when I was a kid. OK, lets go hit Tally, er--Alabama International Speedway. Just like N3, the default setups are pretty good as they stand. And you just *gotta* check out the cool pace car!! Then I see something really strange on the wall of T1. Going into T3, & there it is again. On the wall. It says, "Talladega USA". OK, I'm a little young to remember this clearly, but it sure don't seem right to me. When did Talladega get put on the walls? Get going for the race. The car now seems a lot more stable. I suppose it should, its about twice the weight. Going into T3 once, AJ Foyt comes down on me to try & slam the door. Instead he gives me a real good whack, & I'm able to save it with a quick flick of opposite-lock. Don't try this on the other Nascar versions, kids! Then there are the crewchief & spotter. Same guys. Cmon now, I don't think Jeff Gordon was even *born* yet, never mind being able to spot for anyone. LOL! The engine sound too is either the same as N3, or is very, very close. Cool tire squeal in the corners, really hear them bias-plies howling for mercy. Give it about 10-12 good hard laps & you'll have some hot worn tires on your hands. Pit sounds are different. Air guns seem a little wimpier sounding. All in all, its a lot of fun. But there are a lot of similarities too, but I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised. A couple things that really did take me by surprise, though: 1) Racing back to the yellow !?! and 2) an option for double file restarts?? I don't think so! Glad I bought it, though. Gonna try out some online racing with it tonight!! -- Chuck Kandler #70 ChuckK or KS70 on Won.net K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there was no spotter in 1970... Also, from all the preview I read, there wasn't supposed to be any spotters in the game. Philster

The manual said they used the double-file restarts in '70, and being a '67 model myself I couldn't argue with it. I vaguely remember something about when the double-file rule was put into effect a few years back, that it was a resurrection of an older rule. Or they're just pulling wool over our eyes <g>. Of course, both this and the spotter can be turned off, so if you demand absolute realism (if that rule wasn't really used) you can do away with 'em. They probably figured they didn't want to pull something like with GPL and no AI adjustment, so put the spotter in for those who were just too used to N2/N3. -- Ken's Sig 3.01 "Who is the more foolish? Bingo about the spotter. We had the spotter removed until very late in development of NASCAR Legends, but after running a bunch of multiplayer races without the spotter, we decided the information provided by the spotter is too important for most people to be able to do without. << SNIP >> I would have to agree about the spotter... it's a must have for the multi-player games. If this were real life and we could turn our heads and look out the side windows, etc, then it wouldn't be a problem, but since were limited to a 2-D world, having the spotter is a very good compromise. > Bingo about the spotter. Boy oh boy, everyone is asking about Riverside, but you hit it right on the money about Bowman Gray. It is the most fun that I've had with a Nascar Race in a long time. An absolute blast!!! As for the physics, so far I've found them to be most acceptable. For those of you with Speedvision, they have a show called Car and Track which shows a lot of footage from the '70s races at Talladega. I took the line that I've seen Petty run there and tried it in NL. They would run into the corners low, drift up to about the middle of the track mid-way through the corner, then turn back down to the bottom of the corner at the exit. Result... with the ACE setup, I broke the track record by .14 seconds. (This was in Testing Mode...) So far, I am very happy with the game, but now I've got to get back to that 100% race at Bowman Gray! Travis
Union bought them out in 69 or 70, I can't remember which. Anyway the 70 race tapes clearly show the 76 ball and not the old Pure oil ball. Scott Sanford Papyrus

So, frankly, you've shelled out for what would be a free net download for most games. Take GP2 for instance..... Doug

First of all, let me say I really enjoy the game. One problem tho, and I dont know if anyone can help me with this. I put Hickory and Myrtle Beach and Nashville in there from N99, and it screws up the colors of the car. I dont know if its a track pallete or car pallette problem. Suggestions? Dave
Schlomo4 30 Oct 1999#500209
Ahh so N2/99 and N3 tracks WILL work with NL (albeit with slight color problems)...Looks like ill be running out to EB tomorrow to buy it... Chris
Dino 30 Oct 1999#500210
I put Riverside in N3 and have the same problem with car colors. Any work around for this? DN
Dino 30 Oct 1999#500211
The color problem is not so slight....black <tires> is now florescent yellow. DN
DW 30 Oct 1999#500212
Also, some of the decals and billboards have Union 76 on them. In 1970, wasn't Pure Gasoline still around and the "official" gasoline of NASCAR? I didn't think Union 76 bought out Pure till about 1973-1974. > Then I see something really strange on > the wall of T1. Going into T3, & there it is again. On the wall. It > says, "Talladega USA". You're telling me people on line listen to the spotter? Man, that's funny! Seriously. Nice sim Charlie. Ran a race at Bowman last night. Incredible experience! Otis

I was at Bowman last night, too. A couple of races. Hell, you can't *help* but hear the spotter there! Unless you turn him completely off, of course. I think it was a good decision by Papy to add it in, myself. Those who don't want it can just shut it off. But if it had never been added, those who want (or need) it would have been left out. A spotter can be handy in places like C***te, Michigan, and Alabama. Scott, will there be a patch anytime soon to fix the T6 AI at riverside and the paintkit patch that paints all the front roof supports white? -The Dude? Check out The Dude's radio show on 90.9 FM Indianapolis, B91.

damn, right. hey, scott - have you guys ever thought about charging, say $200, for any sims (GPL, for example)? there are clearly many of us (as witnessed by the tons of posts on RAS) who really like in-depth as-close-as-you-can-get-to-real racing sims with plenty of fun cash available for either computer upgrades or software. $200 is a drop in the bucket when considering hardware issues, but we do it anyways. i for one would gladly plop down 50 clams for even a single additional track in GPL. $500 for something that is going to be used for several years is nothing. i can't believe the ol' bitties that whine in here concerning something that they purchased for $29 and will use for 1,000s of hours. Papyrus Professional Driving Group (subdivision). there ya go. a name free of charge from a marketing professional. cater to the big boys. let the EA monkeyboys deal with the little kids. don't let anybody fool you - the 'ring is worth $1,000 by itself. just think about it. there are wackos right now, sitting in a fake car***pit with speakers on their asses, driving like fools IN THEIR LIVING ROOMS!!!!! these guys would eat alpo if it the choice was that or not having a state-of-the-art driving sim at their disposal.

And just how much crack have you been smoking? I guess the poorer people like me would be s.o.l. huh? Just because $50 isn't much to you, doesn't mean it isn't for others. - James "Gunslinger" Wohlever Techware Motorsports http://techware.4mg.com/

You are talking out your ass! You would be the first one to complain when you dropped $500 dollars for a "GAME" and it did not meet everyone of your expectations. I'd *** too, for $500 I could buy a old junker and enter demolition derbies and still take something home. Your post gives me the impression that you have no responsabilities and that your mom and dad pay for all your toys, food, clothes, shelter, and etc. Paul
