Group mocks an announcement of a new Pentium III 600

Morris Jones announced he was buying a Pentium III 600 system to run N3 and GPL, and most replies teased him for bragging. A few posters discussed whether an AMD Athlon would have been better value, and whether the upgrade from a PII 400 was worthwhile.

Automated summary.

Can't wait to get my new PIII 600, 27gig hd, 128ram, 3dfx 3500, SB Live. To replace my PII 400, should make N3 and GPL fly......

It'll come back down again, but it doesn't look like anytime soon. Still, if there's one thing the market is it's unpredictable - you may see $4 64 megs again next week! Cheers! John

Congrats on the new toy! I'm close to ordering a new system as well. Hoping ram prices will drop a bit, but am getting tired of waiting. :-) What motherboard did you go with? Also, let me know how the 3500 works out, I'm either going with the 3500 or the 3000. I want the 3500, but thought I read of a few driver problems they hadn't worked out yet? Andy

Nice system...too bad, however, that you didn't get the K7-600..cheaper and a better *** PC than the Intel (in fact, it blows the socks off the PIII600)...but your new toy should work just fine... Deadmarsh can?

a) according to pricewatch there is a 200 dollar difference between a P3-600 and a 700 mhz Athlon. So much for "cheaper". b) huge supply quanities are not out yet c) you also have to purchase another motherboard, roughly $150 for a good board there. So that makes the difference ~350. d) if you had said 600mhz Athlon, you might have been right on target > Nice system...too bad, however, that you didn't get the K7-600..cheaper and

Doh....laugh. I read it as 700mhz. Not sure why. And yeah, Athlon's are in stock here too. But nonetheless, point c is still an important point to consider. > >a) according to pricewatch there is a 200 dollar difference between a P3-600

Maybe so, but he said he was buying a system, not parts for a system, so he had to buy a mommy board any ways (although the Athlon board is more expensive). I would also like to add, that I am a happy Athlon 550 owner.
