The are very similar in almost every way, Except that AMD is a Super Socket
7 and PII is a Slot one. The only difference in perfromance is that the K6-2
has slightly slower FPU. But with 3Dnow! enabled on AMD's the gap is zero
again.
Most hardware and software supports 3Dnow these days.
And when you compare prices of the motherboards and CPU's the choice is a no
brainer.
Is there any difference between AMD-K6-2 450Mhz and aPentium 450?
Not really!

GPL however, will run slightly slower on a K6-2 as the game is FPU
intensive, and not 3DNow! enhanced. If you can afford it go for a K6-III (or
an Athlon!)

but when a game supports the 3Dnow! instructions they are
comparable in FPU performance
Cya,

Yes but GPL doesn't support 3dnow - so no doubt the Pentium is better - in
fact a Celeron 400 or higher would be better - now the Athlon is a different
matter............
Isn't it enough that the video card driver is optimized for 3Dnow?

No way!
Typically the combination of 3DNow! enhanced video drivers and DirectX
6.x/7.x can give UP TO about a 15% increase in speed, usually less.
Obviously the better the driver optimisation, the better the performance.
Also the DirectX enhancements only come into play when using Direct3D, so
OpenGL / Glide apps gain nothing through DirectX.
However, when the application / game itself is compiled to use the 3DNow!
extensions, (unfortunately this generally means manual optimisation of code,
as there are shamefully few decent 3DNow! supporting compilers available,
and even they aren't as effective as manual optimising!), you can get a
dramatic performance boost. The casing point for this is Quake 2. The AMD /
Voodoo2 version of Quake 2 can give about 60% performance boost over the
un-optimised version.

Except that the glide drivers for V2 are 3DNow enhanced so you do get
very better graphics performance than PII clock for clock (I have K6-2
300 and run with V2 at 900 and something rez).
You can have an 'interesting' time using TNT2 agp cards (I had to set a
registry setting which is documented at http://www.tweakd.net to get it
to work) -- HOWEVER I haven't got the TNT2 running properly with GPL so
I stick to the V2 for that.
