Nascar3: Direct 3D vs 3Dfx

Very scientific. You forgot to tell us which cards you were using. Mere D3D doesn't say much. You would also have to make sure that both cards are giving their best. The game's graphics options won't help you there, try Display Properties in Windows. If one or both of the cards are using some generic or otherwise limited drivers, change them to something that allows you to make the most of the card's feature set. If the shots you posted were taken using the same card and there are no options that would allow any tweaking, you're simply locked into a crappy D3D implementation. Too bad for you. The binary you posted does speak volumes. But mostly about your lack of knowledge regarding usenet etiquette and video hardware. I'm sorry. Maybe this line-up will manage to demonstrate you how different D3D settings can easily affect the perceived texture quality: http://www.tol.oulu.fi/~midpro/comparison.html --- Antti Markus Peteri 15 miles. your dim light shines from so far away - Soul Asylum, Promises Broken

Well, maybe you could be so kind to tell us what graphics card you are using, and how you tweaked it to make D3D look like that. You got that barrel of your gun dangerously close to your foot :P -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

And you just shot yourself in head. %\v Chris Johnson's binary was a perfect example of what you might get with 8-12 automatically generated mipmap levels, bilinear filtering and low mipmap detail level. Anyways, I'm using a TNT and a TNT2 (not Ultra) myself. If you've got one of those, you should by all means know that there are several D3D options available through Display Properties' D3D Settings. Have you ever changed display resolution? Well if you can do that, what's with the D3D settings? All this has been covered earlier so I'll just quote some of my earlier messages: <snip> ...Unless you're using some ancient drivers with your TNT, there should be a wealth of options available in D3D settings, each of which has a distinct effect on texture quality (mipmap levels, mipmap method, detail level, even texel alignment). <another msg> ...The number of mipmap levels and mipmap detail level are often the most significant factors. If you witness excessive blurring or some unspecified texture anomalies, reduce the number of auto-generated mipmap levels... --- Antti Markus Peteri 15 miles. your dim light shines from so far away - Soul Asylum, Promises Broken

Ed... in the future, please don't post something that is non-related to this newsgroup. As far as posting a binary, there are no rules on the internet... that's what makes the internet so popular. If you want to set rules, set them within your home... not here. Thanks

I would suggest that you read the rec.autos.simulators FAQ please Doug. There is netiquette on the USENET newsgroup, and it excludes posting any kind of binary file in a non binary newsgroup, and r.a.s. is one of them. Haven't got a 3dFX card then Antii ?? ;-)) scientific. You forgot to tell us which cards you were using. Mere
Nope, just TNT and TNT2, that's what I said in the follow up. Tho I must admit that V3s are currently very attractive products, the real El Cheapos of video hw, most bang for the buck. One fine product among many others. I do however get miffed about people drawing conclusions without doing their homework first and even closing their eyes from the reality in order to maintain the illusion. I suppose it's a survival strategy of some kind. --- Antti Markus Peteri 15 miles. your dim light shines from so far away - Soul Asylum, Promises Broken

an FAQ?! Where do you see an FAQ?! netiquette?! That word isn't listed in my dictionary... are you making all this stuff up?! I do not see the word 'moderated' on this newsgroup. Keep your rules to yourself... It's bad enough the government tells me what I can and can't do in my country, but you are trying to tell me what to do on a newsgroup?! Go fight for freedom of squirrels or something. But I pay for my internet access and I will use it any way I see fit. And until you pay for my access, I set my own rules. Maybe you should check out my FAQ sometime. ;-) (although it may seem like I am angry by this, I am not. I only want to state that the popularity of the internet is based on freedom of choice. There is no law against posting a binary. So please stop telling someone what they can and cannot do in the privacy of their own home)
Whoa Doug...calm down buddy <G> It's been long established that binary files get posted in binary groups and not in non-binary group. Granted there is no way (that I know of) to enforce the rule and you're right that part of the popularity of the internet is freedom of choice but it is also a community and communities make certain guidelines. I don't have a copy of the FAQ so maybe someone who does can post it for you and as far as the meaning of netiquette, it's the same as etiquette (that one will be in your dictionary) I'd suggest, if you don't mind, that in the future that you post the file in the binary newsgroup (someone help me out here..can't find it at the moment) and then post a message here concerning it. -- Thanks Michael Horton Webmaster of http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/gpl/ Home of the F2/F3 Hotlaps and http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/html/ HTML for Begineers

It is not so much one set of rules but rather, courtesy. Many Newsgroup readers are from countries that charge by the minute for internet access. Getting stuck dloading a bianary file hits them right in the wallet. Best bet is to either use the sim bianary or set up the graphic on a web site and post the link. (there are several "free" webhosting sites. Homestead.com is one that comes to mind. Later. dave henrie
