Grand Prix Legends tracks with long straights
Rich asked for GPL add-on circuits with long straights. Suggestions included Solitude, Anderstorp, Riverside, Zeltweg, Avus, Bathurst, the Isle of Man and Ridgehill, and Magnus T noted the GPL Track Database lists track lengths. The thread moved on to tips for the Masta kink and the Monaco chicane.

I'd go to the GPL Track Database and just work my way through the
tracks, looking at the maps. There's that track in East Germany --
Avus? -- that is nothing but a long straight, hairpin corner, and a
long straight back again to another hairpin.

oops I forgot to mention I have that one too.
Its hard to judge by those maps how long the straights are because their
scales are not always entirely accurate.
Download, trial and error I guess.
I haven't had a lot of success trying to keep up with the AI cars unless I'm
drafting, and I was wondering whether this is normal.
I could draft @220mph in a Weslake Eagle but if I fell out of it I could
only manage about 204 using the available setups.
How do those AI cars go so fast? Anyone?

The gpl AI don't use the same physics model that you do, and their top
speed is determined by the 'hype' not the car's ability.
The best I can recall managing was 209mph at Milano in a Honda while
slipstreaming (drafting) an Eagle.
Actually that's not quite true, I've gone faster in a Bronda at Spa, but
it wasn't in a race (or even a draft ;-))

Off the top of my head I'd list Anderstorp, Snetterton67, Riverside,
Zeltweg, Grenslandring, Bathurst and Chimay (has thread the needle chicanes
in the longest sides of the rectangle, though) as having decent sized
straights.
But the daddy of GPL straights has got to be the back straight at Solitude
with its "dont blink", absolutely flat in 5th hump/kink and sphincter cramp
inducing brakingzone for Schatten at the end. A straight which seperates the
men from the boys, IMO.

Ridgehill (you should definitely try Ridgehill!), Buenos Aires 67 (#

All tracks have their lenghts displayed too so the map plus that
should give you a decent idea :-)
You can actually sort your results on track length too..

Oopsies, sorry, didn't see that. Shoulda, woulda, dint. I was wondering
why the obvious weren't there. (And what abt. Avus, or do I have to go back
and read 'em all over again.)
BTW, the fastest Vmax I ever saw recorded @ Mulsanne was ca. 547 mph in a

Bathurst (Mount Panarama) - long back straight
Isle of Man TT circuit
Avus - two v.long straights!
I seem to remember that Glacier (sp?) also has a long straight?

Now, Masta is still just a conundrum for me. I have yet to get the

Easy (sort of).
In the Eagle (I use Peter Jensen's stable setups) just lift a bit past
the last brake marker, and at the same time, steer in, and smoothly put
on throttle again. Stay LEFT LEFT in this first bit, until your focus
shifts to the armco barrier on the right. Then I just whack the weel all
the way to the right and keep it there until I'm sure I'm gonna make it
past the frietkot (that's the french fries bar on the left where we all
do regular interior redesign with F1 cars flying into the living at full
speed...) and straighten out. Well, helps me nearly always make the
turn, anyway...

If you finished a race at Monaco you're way better than ME..! :)
I found out two things about the Monaco chicane though, let's see if
it's the same for others:
- you *need* to be on the lefthand side entering it, one wheel on the
(pink) pavement usually. Otherwise, it's crunch time.
- you *need* to aim right through it without steering at all. If you
steer while in or near it, your rear end gets unstable (especially since
it's in the air a lot due to those darn bumps) and it's crunch time again.
(- and if you make it, you're in extreme danger of being so relieved
that you're miss your braking point and crash right out of Tabac ;)

I don't think I was all the way on the left. I'd barely clip the curb on the
left, but I couldn't run as close as others seem to. If I do, the car wants to
hit the left wall on exit. I don't see how guys can be farther over that curb,
as fast as they are, and *still* keep it off the left wall. Doesn't seem
possible.

I have actually won a league race (IGPS/1) there. Tony Rickard and
Graeme Nash were right on my ass coming out of the hairpin on the
final lap, too.
That was one of the most fun races in which I ever participated in

I may survive riding the curb on the right side, but not on the left.
And anyway I prefer not to ride the curb at all and just enter from
the right side.

Yeah, well, obviously this a qualifying only thing and one does lift to
prevent an overrev when the rear wheels momentarily get airborne, but
basically, yes, flat in 5th.
Keep your foot in it, aim to cut it slightly (just noticed apex is blind as
well <g>) and burp the throttle as the car "sails" over the hump (wouldn't
call it a jump). I think it's possible to keep one's foot buried all the
way, but you will bang it off the rev limiter when you do.
I've put an example here...
http://users.skynet.be/bs175993/backstretch.rpy
You'll note I'm about a tyre-width wide (left front should hover over
verge), but I still make it with plenty to spare.
> I guess I'll go play outside with the rest of
> the boys...<g>
Observe chickenshit braking for Schatten in above replay ;-)... 'cos that's
the scary part. The hump is basically setup and a bit of confidence in the
car.
