Whatever Happened To That GPaL Thing Anyway?

Jack Rambo returns with news of the GPaL project

Posters asked what had happened to GPaL, Jack Rambo's long-delayed Grand Prix Legends add-on project. Rambo reappeared, apologised for his silence after a new job and a system crash, and said the project was still coming without giving a date. Regulars welcomed him back and filled him in on news such as NASCAR Racing 3, and a month later people were still asking for a real update.

Oops! Let's try again... I understand that there has been some speculation, but does anybody know whatever happened to that GPaL thing? Thanks in advance. ;) Jack Rambo

Yeah, but I heard the guy was either beamed away by aliens or was part of some scam to market e-mail addresses to developing third world nations. Go figure.
Jack Rambo 22 Sep 1999#494400
Well, I think the theory sounds plausible, except for, perhaps, the part about the hair cut. But I have to disagree with you on the latter point. Count me in that minority.
Jack Rambo 22 Sep 1999#494401
GPaL...of course. The question that remains is when. Sometimes life just gets in the way! But don't start thinking it's never coming until the site goes down. I never have convinced anyone to foot the bill for the site, you know! ;) Apologies to everyone for the silence, but the new job and the major system crash really did bring me to my communicating and developing knees. Nice to be back in the neighborhood. Haven't slipped into a Lotus in months! Can somebody give me a synopsis of what's happened in the sim racing world in the last couple of months? Well there was this other theory ... but of course no one believed it ... that he got a hair cut & a real job. There are some (a minority for sure) that believe it will one day see the light of day ... don't believe it a minute myself <G> Shane

Good question... It was coming. And coming. And coming. And then, it was waiting for the 1.1 patch. So, we waited for the 1.1 patch. And waited. And waited. Then, the 1.1 patch came out, and I haven't heard a single thing about Gpal since. -Larry

> Can somebody give me a synopsis of what's happened in the sim racing world > in the last couple of months? > Jack Rambo > www.RaceLive.com/GPaL Basically,YOU were a hot topic for a while. Everyone had their doubts. (a few had faith in you though). Oh yea, N3 came out. ;-)
Surpise, surprise, Jack's back! What has happened since you were away? Well, Nascar 3 has been released. Some people like it, some don't. Lots of dicussions about N3. Personally I love it. It could have been better, lots better actually, but it's a big improvement over N2, so I still love it. Patch 1.1 came out, I believe you were still here at that time. Quite some new problems with the patch, slow-motion problems when racing online (like seen in GP2), the timing is not correct anymore under certain circumstances (when timing a replay with a stopwatch, the GPL time differs from real time). Randy is working on 1.2 at the moment. Couple of new racing games coming up. We've seen the first screenshots of GP3, some people allready tested it. Other upcoming driving games or sims: - Spirit of 39 (look excellent) - Driver (demo available, arcade game like Midtown Madness) - GP500 (The GPL of motor racing) - Nascar Legends - propable some more but these games I'm waiting for. Ok, back to business: GPaL! :) The last thing we heard from you was that it was allmost ready, you posted that 'GPaL tonight!' topic. Later that day the topic changed into 'GPal tonight: late'. I was one of the guys who would test it that evening. You mailed me and told me that you had a problem with the installer. If that was the only problem, the final release wouldn't be too far away. You postponed the release date with 2 days, and then we heard nothing from you anymore. No wonder people started to wonder if GPaL ever would be released. I think we're all very happy that you're back (someone even suggested that perhaps you died, he couldn't think of any other reason why you were gone so suddenly :) Bottom line: Is the only thing keeping you from releasing GPaL the installer? Now that you're back, do you have some spare time again to finish that installer problem? No problem if it takes a couple of months or whatever before GPaL is released, but me too started to wonder of GPaL would ever see the light of day. Welcome back Jack! :) Andre

Hmm, I find the alien adduction story very likely too ;-) Well now, since Jack has got his news working again, is he also going to pick up programming (the need for GPal hasn't diminished), or is he going to GNU the source for others to pick up and finish? Jack, welcome back. Nice to know that you're still alive. Now the great debate on whether or not GPaL will ever be finished can come to an end. Joel Willstein

Hey Jack! I'm glad you're back. Nice to see you again. I hope you have time to take that Lotus for a "spin" sometime. :) Hmm, have you tried NASCAR 3 yet? AMA Superbikes was just released. GP500 demo was released a while ago. But GPL is still the king. :) -- Greger Huttu

I assume that you, Greger, Ian, and a select few others are still the heirs to King of GPL throne? :) Nice to hear from you! Hope all goes well! Jack www.RaceLive.com/GPaL

Ok, its been almost a month since this question was asked and I haven't seen the answer yet. While I hate to get my hopes up again, does anyone know what the real story is?
