Hi there,
I thought I'd send this post to explain a problem I had
lately. My GPL CD would no longer function, all other CD's work so my drive
is ok. I had no other solution (except maybe a pirate copy) than to buy GPL
again.......... I did this with a little bit of regret, money is money, but
GPL is being sold over here (France) with Viper Racing fo free, (It says
"Buy GPL, Viper Racing Offered", so It's definately not the other way
round), for the modest fee of 249Ffr, thats 25,,, $40 if Im not too far
off. I think thats pretty good, but several things crossed my mind:
1> Is GPL going to be taken off the shelves completely?
<Thats what the salesman told me when I took some interest In asking about
GPL sales etc, he has no idea to what point so many of us are ***ed to
this sim, but thats besides the point, what Im getting at is what will
happen if another CD goes kapoot and I cant find GPL in the stores? Then
I'll be forced to think ahead and Pirate the thing.....which brings me to my
second point
2> Sierra have made it impossible to us Europeans to play (offline) GPL
without the CD in the drive, which means in , out , in, out and what happens
to the CD?? It gets scratched of course. Its not that I dont take care of my
CDs, but it's obvious to me that Its because I play GPL so much, but then I
listen to Music on my PC, install other programs, that after so many in-outs
of the CD drive, that its surface has degraded. But then Sierra didnt think
of this did they? So...
3> The point in penalising us Europeans is because they are scared we lend
CD to friends, they copy it, pirating under whatever form, but have they
thought that this prevention might actually become the cause of Pirating?
If I was rich,(which I'm not <G>) I'd be happy to buy a load of GPL original
CD's, because its the BEST SIM THERE IS. But I'd prefer by far buying it
straight from papyrus, for their hard work, than from Sierra.
4> So I demand of Sierra that either they send me a GPL CD every time it
ends up kapoot , OR they bring a patch out, so that our European versions
work without the cd OR they give me permission to make copies of it, I know
that officially Its allowed to make one back-up copy, but however little it
costs for a blank cd(and you need a CDR), It really shouldnt be my problem
should it? Or am I talking a load of bollocks? :o)
I should put smileys everywhere on this letter, I'm not taking this
seriously so dont write ***in letters back guys please

You just have to tweak 1 little byte...
And you can just backup those 133Mb of the GPL directory, and copy it
back later on if you lose it. It doesn't seem to do a lot with the
registry.

I think there is another solution: Send the CD to the manufacturer of
importer. They will replace the CD (virtually) free. I think they are even
legally forced to do that (you should ask de consumentenbond).
Furthermore, it is NOT illegal to copy (let copy) a CD for backup
purposes. I think it is a good idea to backup the most important CD's,
store them in a safe place and use the copied CD's to use.
So it is legal to copy your new CD to replace the original one and to sell
the new CD. Then you have a licensed version, a backup for your own
purposes and (partly) your money back!
Anyone who (dis)agrees with my intepretation of (Dutch) laws?

So...You will be able to install from the copied CD but you will NOT be able to
play the game with that CD! The protection system prevents it.

:) Nice attempt at eqivocation, but I don't think Dutch laws are that
rotten. It's not as if we were talking about Belgi... (duck and take
cover).
Seriously, if you read the license agreemanet of virtually any piece
of software, you will see that you did not "buy the software" or "buy
the CD". What you bought is usually the right to *run* the software on
one computer at a time. You bought a license - the physical objects
that come with it (CD, box, manual, etc.) are not the most important
objects of your purchase, the license is.
Now, if you somehow get hold of two CDs, but have only one license,
and you sell one of the CDs to somebody else and keep using the other,
one of you two is using a pirated copy, even if you both have original
CDs.
