GP3 rant....

17 posts by 13 people · 08 Sep 1999 - 30 Sep 1999

Well, GP3 may or may not look good enough, etc, etc, but there is one thing that will make me NOT dish out the required $ : no internet play. I love GPL, but must confess, I never race the AI, and haven't done so since I discovered vroc. No matter how good the AI are, they make for a lousy post-race chat, and they won't show up at race meets and have a pint in the company of others. It does not surprise me at all if the reason for this is the greed of a certain governing body/man. All I can say is: yuk. Make us a F3000 or CART carset/patch Geoff, so we can race each other for real :-) Matt -- --------------------------------- Matthew B. I'm really hoping that the info we've received so far regarding internet play is just incomplete. I want this sim, with at least 8 player TCP/IP internet play, very badly. Microprose is making GP500 playable at the MS *** Zone, and I was imagining that GP3 would at least have something similiar. David G Fisher
Of couse it's going to have web & net multiplayer facilities. To not do so would be STUPID - D'YA HERE ME IN CHIPPING SODBURY (Home of Microprose, and they could probably here me from my Tetbury Home) STUPID Doug

I hate to cast shadows of doom on this one but I have heard wind that a certain Mr ecclestone will not allow internet play without more licencing negotiations. I have also heard the same thing, Mark. It would appear that Hasbro may have to cough up some very serious money indeed if this is true.

Couldn't someone just kill that bastard.. Like he didn't have enough $$$ already???
Just to get things straight, let's not hope that that thing is dependent any more on MS ***than it needs to. Most of the stuff at the MS *** zone can be played without connecting there first, so I hope gp3 will feature a real tcp/ip server mode just like gpl does. I'd hate to see them rely on IPX as a LAN protocol (which is already starting to smell funny) or some even crappier stuff that MS manage to come up with. Oh, did I mention a Linux port would be nice? ;-) Regards, Uwe -- Uwe Schuerkamp http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany (52.0N/8h30mE) Ever wondered what's wrong with the world? http://bnetwork.com/ PGP Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61
>I hate to cast shadows of doom on this one but I have heard wind that a >certain Mr ecclestone will not allow internet play without more licencing >negotiations. Bash MGPRS2 as much as you like, but this is one thing they did right. There are so many brilliant people out there, reverse engineering your gfx format in an afternoons work, that I just do not understand why software companies don't take advantage of that right away like UbiSoft did with their editors. Don't these people use the internet? Have they ever taken a look at the most excellent stuff available at www.gp2.com and so on? Why do they *want* to make life hard for those programmers? Just document the gfx and track format, release some editors (which have to be available in-house anyway) with the game and give the ugly dwarf name Ecclestone the finger. With all the stuff already out there (carsets, setups etc.) it might be easiest to ship a converter with the finished game that converts your gp2 carsets to gp3. Rather idealistic.. Sure it would be better for us, but still the majority of racing sim customers doesn't "link" to the Internet like the typical R.A.S reader. At the moment it would seriously sink sales I guess... So it will never be more than a way to evade licensing because of lack of financial resources. There's always hope, though. I for one hope that GP3 will be a little bit transparant in this aspect (people keep telling how "customisable" GP2 is, but they forget that it wasn't supposed to be AT ALL. Some great hackers spent all their evenings finding out the details) JoH Please remove *anti-spam* from the email when replying. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= When everything else failed, we can still become im- mortal by making an enormous blunder.... At the moment it would seriously sink sales I guess... So it will never Hmm, I don't know... I mean, racing sim customers are a competitive bunch, and I would think the desire to get in contact with other *freaks* sharing the passion of sitting in front of the tube for hours on end turning a *** wheel in their hands and working the pedals below the desk like mad (this behaviour is certainly *not* common in my neighbourhood ;-) is rather strong (after all, this is how you and I got here in the first place). My guess is that a rather high percentage of simracing enthusiasts are connected to the net... just check on your friends sharing the hobby, how many of them do have internet access? I know two others in my town, and both of them skim the net regularly for updates, patches and VROC fun. Correct. Any company ignoring this simple fact is bound to repeat the same error over and over again. This is the one thing UbiSoft did right with MGPRS2. cheers, uwe -- Uwe Schuerkamp http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany (52.0N/8h30mE) Ever wondered what's wrong with the world? http://bnetwork.com/ PGP Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61

That still doesn't represent a meanigful part of the market. And they probably do because you informed them? Still, we don't quite know what future the Internet will bring us. It could just be a case of waiting another few years. Oh, I would give $$$ to know whether King Crammond is aware of what's going on around sims on the Net, and what his position is. Even if his attitude towards it is positive, there could be other problems. Like that rich old dwarf, who probably doesn't like it that too many people are driving a variety of contemporary and historical tracks WITHOUT A LICENSE (can you say "blasphemy" <G>) At the moment it's not important enough to seriously battle this evolution, but things could change rapidly. Like, no Internet play promised for GP3. Why's that??? Creating existing carsets and circuits could become illegal at the blink of an eye. Agreed. This is indeed a great opportunity, and I sure hope they notice it! cheers! Totally agree, AI can never beat the real thing. I'd rather drive an Formula Ford sim online than an F1 sim offline. /Christer, competes in three GPL online leagues

F1 licensing is strange insomuch that *everything* has to be licensed. You can't say "We want an F1 license" and then do what you want, you're told how much this will cost and how much that will cost and then you decide. Apparently FIFA is a dream to work with compared to FOCA. M
I have to agree. I loved GP2. Did a huge web site dedicated to it. Spent probably thousands of hours on it. But since GPL with online play has come out I don't do GP2 at all. Nothing is as good as driving with real people. If GP3 does not have internet play then for the first time ever, I believe I won't bother buying a GC racing sim.( Never thought I would say this ). I'll stick with GPL. Enough of my friends will buy it for me to satisfy my curiousity but that will be it. And 4 cars online won't cut it either. ATM I can race in cars that are heaps of fun to drive with 18 other drivers online. Call me spoilt but that's the state of the art and anything less will be a let down. C'mon admit it, as soon as GP3 hits the shelves, you'll be rushing out to grab a copy. Just like the rest of us. THEN we start ranting. -- Bye, Leo
