Notable threadFirst Grand Prix 3 screenshots examined

Posters examined the first Grand Prix 3 screenshots, released around ECTS and shown in software rendering. Most were impressed for software mode, though some found the models blocky, and there was debate over the visible steering wheel with its dashboard display and whether it would cost frame rate. Posters also hoped the cockpit would move as in GPL.

This doesn't look bad for SOFTWARE!! Looks more like TV coverage to me!!! Just don't understand why the wheels are included this time (never was any need for that). Not sure that I'll like the turning wheel, either. Hope I'll get used to those two changes. JoH Anyone a towel? (I'm drooling all over the place <G>)

Am I the only person here who thinks everything is a little "square". This is late 1999, we want more polys on our models, yes, even the trackside. M

I meant to also add that it doesn't look too bad however... then again, Psygnosis' F1 games *look* good. M
FANTASTIC! Looks a bit good to me! :o) If it's only software mode, wouldn't it have been a bit choppy; as in frame rate?

No, no, no! Get your arms out of my***pit (and the virtual steering wheel, too) -- I already have arms (and a wheel) of my own, right in front of me! I wonder how much of a CPU load those arms, that wheel, AND the moving dash display attached to the wheel are going to take up? Will GP3 even be able to run well on a P3-500? Other than those concerns, I do have to say that I REALLY like the way it looks so far -- thanks for the post! -- JB

It might just be you -- I think the steering wheel (UG!) is squared-off to better represent the oddly-shaped wheels that they use in F1. Other than that, I don't see too much blockiness. The tires look good, the AI cars look good, the trees look good, and the buildings look good -- easily as good as GPL, from what I can tell from the pictures (which aren't screen shots, per se, but pictures of a monitor displaying the video). Much more photo-realistic than I would have expected at this point in development, with only D3D suppport. - JB

No... really???? Duh. I know what shape F1 wheels are I was talking about the 3d models in general. They look very blocky. M

Would be kinda hard to get rid of the virtual steering wheel considering how much information the modern F1 car displays on it. Think of it as a virtual instrument cluster with added steering capabilities :) David
John Bodin 06 Sep 1999#490451
Sorry, didn't mean to insult -- I just didn't see much else that looked all that blocky to me, and the wheel (which I figured you knew was a squared-off wheel) does look a bit blocky, but that's the way they tend to look. Again, sorry for the confusion. - JB

True, but I hope they include the option to eliminate the arms/wheel and go with a fixed dash display -- I'd rather have my CPU focusing on the physics and AI, rather than how many degrees off the horizontal the digits on my speedometer display should be. Then again, GP2 was a processor/hardware hog, so why should we expect anything less from GP3? -- JB >Would be kinda hard to get rid of the virtual steering wheel considering how

two thoughts: 1: The West McLaren was on display, but he screen shots only show Marlboro Ferrari's. (wonder how the West folks feel about that) 2: Oh my Gawd...GP2ers are gonna have a heart attack. did you see it? it's in there. A freekin' steering wheel! next they'll be adding arms and legs (imagine watching the legs dance while shifing/accelerating/braking) dave henrie

Look closely -- the arms and hands are there already. I pray they allow you to toggle this option off (as well as the moving wheel, too). -- JB

Another time.... I see no arms and hands in those pictures !!!!! All I see is a dark grey normal padding you have where the hands should be, with the holes in them (you see the silver paddles there also). If you saw hands and arms, it would actually take a lot of space, especially in the gp3c picture, since the right hand would be hiding part of the wheel ;-) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... It's not a very good picture, but aren't those arms that I see attached to the hands on the wheel, or am I seeing the side rails of the***pit and mistaking that for arms? Oops -- waitaminit . . . I just checked the screen shots again, and it appears that I AM mistaken. What I thought were "hands" is actually the grip section of the wheel (looked like a black-gloved hand ON the wheel to me at first glance) -- and I mistook the side of the***pit on the right (the part with the red "N" in the white circle) to be part of a driving suit sleeve (with an arm inside, of course). Sorry 'bout that -- looks like I was VERY wrong. Now, make that wheel stand still -- I don't want my CPU spending precious cycles painting sideways numerals when there's serious physics to be modelled! ;-) -- JB

No need for the apology. Look at the first screenshot and at how sharp the corner of the building is. Adding an extra poly to the model wouldn't increase the overhead by anything noticable and the starting grid is the place you spend longest looking at the scenery so IMO it should be more detailled than the rest of the track and certainly more detailled than it is. Those models looked like GP2 with some new textures. Incidentally... I'm not commenting on the playability/speed of engine etc here but I expected more from the gfx engine. M

Never tried GPL did you? Once you're used to the wheels and steering wheel it's very hard to step back to sims who don't have it included. It really adds to realism.

Maybe I got problems with my eyes or we are looking at different shots but I really don't get your point. In fact it all looks very smooth (especially when you consider this to be the software-rendered version) to me. Look at the curvature of the front wheels, pretty cool IMO. BTW: I simply can't imagine that GP3 won't support 3D acc. cards, they would be very stupid IMHO. Jan. J.H.Hovius.vcf < 1K Download

Duh! The McLaren car was on display on a different stand - I can't remember the company (although they make steering wheels, or something). [snip] That's correct. The McLaren mock-up was for the McLaren racing wheel called "Double Tremor" I think. They had them linked to Playstations but the blurb says that they're also for the PC. The wheels are distributed by Sony and the RRP is GBP 119.90 which sounds too ***y expensive. Also note that there was a Jordan car there as well at the Jordan racing wheel stand (for Nintendo and Playstation). -- Kulvinder Singh Matharu Website: http://www.matharu.demon.co.uk/ (note : e-mail header address deliberately mangled)

That pixellation is going to be both a letdown and a cpu-eater. Particularly w/the steering wheel/arm animation thing.

> Do you mean Jordan will be the CAR of your choice or the GIRL of your > choice..? :-) Tough call, can I have both ? :-) I can't help it, I really like the syle of the Jordan team, slightly "laid back" with a bit of "rock'n roll" thrown in, while still keeping their professional approach, nice to see that when the rest of the grid is all business these days, and it's NOT just because of the gridgirls either :-) -- Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/
