I've been practising on a couple of tracks
Monza 1.29.83 Eagle
Nurb 8.59.21 Brabham
Spa 3.26.00 Eagle
Are these times good enough to have a go at racing online and if so where do
I go to get hooked up?
Any advice appreciated

I would say the main requirement for online racing is being a good sport. Don't
try crazy overtaking moves that take people out, and move over when being
lapped. You will make mistakes, but say sorry and move on.
Your times are reasonable and if you can do those times consistently lap after
lap you will win some races. For example, the faster guys run in the 1:28's at
Monza in the Eagle, and in the 1:27's with Lotus. But there aren't too many
around running those times.

I'm not the fastest driver, but
I've participated in some on-line races at Watkins Glen with Lotus drivers
who were posting qual times in the 1:05 range, while I was up in the 1:09
range in my lowly Ferrari. Starting from the rear, I slowly picked of the
Loti as the spun into the weeds lap after lap, trying to use their
hotlapping qualifying style when they should have been racing.
I started 8th in this particular race, and finished 2nd -- I never got in
anybody's way, never had any contact with any other cars, I never caused any
accidents (though I avoided many that happened in front of me), and I never
had any runoffs myself. I came up on many accidents and had to take action
to avoid them, and I had to avoid several drivers coming back onto the track
after a runoff (usually Lotus drivers, it seemed). The would often pass me,
of course, only to watch me tool by while they sat in the grass, counting
the weeds a few laps later.
My fastest lap time in this particular race was in the 1:08 - 1:09 range,
proving that sure and steady CAN win races. Allison Hine touts this in some
of her Ferrari and Coventry tips, and it's true. There are a LOT of
hotlappers out there who are faster than me, but they aren't all necessarily
more consistent than I am.
Please note that I am pretty much a hack driver, BTW -- I make NO claims to
greatness! <G>

Certainly not true - or at least not true that you can't race people
of somewhat "limited" GPL ability. I had a SUPERB race at Spa the other
day where for the first three laps all of the first four were right with
each other (and with me in the middle) and I lap Spa in the 3:30 sort of
time. [Excellent race until I lost it through Masta on the 4th lap and
because I had to back off, tangled with the guy in 4th.]

Heh - I'd go for this one. I've never gone faster than 1:30 in my
Ferrari. [And I've driven the Ferrari so much that driving a 1:29:50 in
the Lotus feels like cheating :-)].

Lets put it this way....i cant get below 1:30 at Monza in an Eagle (only car i
drive other than the BRM). I would race online in a second if i could get a
decent connection. Right now i have AOL which is well...poor at best with
online racing. However i have raced my buddies head to head (Direct Connect
and via Modem) and i had a blast. We all got GPL about the same time and are
at about the same level of expertise (as in i usually win and im not very
good). But online racing is a blast. If u can get 36fps solid then your more
than a welcome competitor.

I second that

With GPL 1.1 I get 25 fps off line and 36-37 fps on line. Both times
are with the same graphics and sound settings. It was the other way
around with GPL 1.0. Your computer may be different though.
BTW: AMD K6-2/350, 160 meg ram, Voodoo2.

Excellent.
At Monza (excepting the start lap) I usually run a 21 lap race with the
slowest laps around 1.30.8 and slowly getting quicker as the fuel load
reduces.
At Spa my times are not yet a consistent as I would like, they can vary by
up to 5 seconds and I still manage to overcook it in the first corner a
little.
When I can get my times within 5 secs at Nurb, I'll let you all know, till
then I'll keep quiet.

I'll be online racing before the week is out....sounds like a heap of fun.
Just for the record, in an offline race with 20 cars I'm getting a rock
solid 36fps
Using AMD K6 2 450 CPU with 128mb and Voodoo 2 card.
Should I expect much of a drop in frame rate online?
Richard,
That was a great race, until lap 4 all cars were within sight of each other. (I was
the car just in front of you.) The fourth place car won it as he was the only one
that didn't lose it. I lost it in Stavelot right after you crashed in Masta. The
first
place car lost it in Blanchimont on the last lap allowing the fourth place car to
take the win.

regardless. We who race in F2 and F3 regularly used to have to endure al lot
of people turning up in F1 cars and refusing to leave.
Of course this issue has been resolved with new versions, but setting a time
limit is a different proposition altogether.
