GP2 - no "canned spins"!

When the Monza race is coming, I tried once again the old GP2, and a comment came to my mind: This old 2D-sim is really well made! After having got used to the GPL, my reactions have also become faster, and many times in playing GP2 I could catch and correct a starting spin! In my humble opinion (IMHO) the physics of GP2 really are/were very good compared for ex. to the much newer F1RS and MGPRS2! Still, after years, the feel of driving a racing car is so good in GP2 that only GPL is better! IMHO, of course... (And I compare these two to those aforementioned F1RS and MGPRS2, and also SCGT, CPR, Viper, ICR2, N99, OF1R, TOCA2) Arto
Yes you're right on the money, Arto I didthe same thing. I have been playing MGPRS2 and GPL when I just decided to install GP2 just to check how it feels after all these years, and... it is still DAMN good game, G-A-M-E! I threw MGPRS2 out of the hard disk right away and into the recycle bin, where it belongs. I 've been playing lot of GPL and I love the way it so accurately simulates the race car driving experience, especially with FF, and all this stuff going on with separate throttle and brake axis. When I returned to GP2 I also learned that I'm able to correct spins and use left foot braking to enter corners deeper. Geoff Crammond did great job! And I think that GP2 is at least as enjoyable as GPL, or even more, since the *** experience is so well balanced with simulation side that it's very easy to get a grip and more you drive( without any helps on) , the more you get sucked into it's magic, still it doesn't wear out, since you find always different ways to drive a better lap...next time. Just like tetris! MGPRS2, well that was really frustrating. Losing the grip was so easy and annoying. Seems like they are simulating the spins as it would happen in real life, BUT in real life you have one really important factor, G-force, and your ass to bench, which tell you when you are driving too fast and on the edge. That's not how it works in games. And that is something that Geoff Crammond got right. In GP2 you somehow really have the right feel, even without FF. I have now PII 300, 64 RAM, MSFF Wheel, and TNT2 ULTRA, and that's also something else, cause when I started to drive GP" around 96 I had P90, 8 ram, and normal VGA card. Just until Now I have the gear to crank it up. Sometimes I think that best way to experience good simulations is to wait two or three years after they have been released and when price of hardware has sinked, go and buy computer which can survive the simulation.

I concur. In fact I've been saying good things about GP2's spin modeling for years. Some people complain that it's too hard to catch a slide, but I haven't seen contemporary f1 drivers*** the rear-end out much either. When you do catch a slide, its a sweet little thrill. Just a short, hard snap of opposite lock and a little throttle. What's really cool is the way you can throw the car into a slide and let the curb guard catch you. I've seen real f1 drivers use this technique. Best physics model around besides GPL. On the other hand, people must get sick of hearing us ooze over it since you cant even buy it anymore. :) -A >Yes you're right on the money, Arto >I didthe same thing. Where did you get that idea? - go into any games shop in the UK and they will probably have it for sale. -- AG Remove removes from address to remove anti-spam measures. -- Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavour! (Damon Hill - 16th June 1999)
: I concur. In fact I've been saying good things about GP2's spin modeling : for years. Some people complain that it's too hard to catch a slide, but I : haven't seen contemporary f1 drivers*** the rear-end out much either. : When you do catch a slide, its a sweet little thrill. Just a short, hard : snap of opposite lock and a little throttle. What's really cool is the way : you can throw the car into a slide and let the curb guard catch you. I've : seen real f1 drivers use this technique. Best physics model around besides : GPL. On the other hand, people must get sick of hearing us ooze over it : since you cant even buy it anymore. :) And here's your proof: [link lost in import: /~bakhtiar/f1_movies/san99_ja_cam.mov] In-car footage of Jean Alesi in the Sauber on a qualifying run. Watch Alesi catch his slide. Watch it again, because you probably missed it! It's incredible. Gone are the days of*** it out on opposite lock for a whole corner. I still think GP2's great. Then again, what I wouldn't give for a mid-to-late 70's Formula One sim. If i could replicate Gilles Villeneuve's antics in *** in the old 312T2, I would be in heaven. Or give me a "racing scenario" like in MGPRS, dueling with Arnoux on the last lap of the '79 French GP in Dijon. See it for yourself: [link lost in import: /~bakhtiar/f1_movies/Dijon79.mpg] It's outrageous what they got away with. One tap nowadays and it would be over for both drivers. Well, I could have sworn I read somewhere that their license expired, so they couldn't produce it anymore. But I'm glad to hear it hasn't disappeared yet! -A >> I concur. You can use CarEdit to make it so that the cars turn to sprites when they are much farther away. ;) Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited

how did you guys get the sound to work?? Got an SBLive Value, and GP2 refuses to recognise it!.....help anyone????

1. Is Sound Blaster Emulation in [Control panel\System\Device Manager\Creative....] enabled ? 2. Are its resourses I220 D5 I5 ? Gp2 setup must auto-detect it !

I can't claim to answer your question specifically, but are you verifying that it is configured by doing a sound test? This is not necessarily the way to go. I recently added some hardware to my PC (not a sound card) and GP2 would then crash on startup unless I had the NOSOUND flag set. I tried 5 or 6 times to set the sound card up using various settings (even though I knew what the correct ones were). However, on each occaision I used the sound test to verify that I had chosen correctly, and each time the install program locked up. I was approaching the "throw the PC out of the window" part of the evening and decided to first have one more go at installation, I selected "Auto Detect" and OK - Note: no sound test! The installation program terminated fine. I then ran up GP2 and had purr-fect sound. hope this helps - wish I understood what was going on though. mart -- Mart Hugh Rogers
