Dale Earnhardt spins Terry Labonte to win at Bristol

Fans argued over Dale Earnhardt's last-lap bump that spun Terry Labonte at Bristol, which drew boos from the crowd. Many called it a deliberate cheap shot and criticised NASCAR for not penalising him while it had penalised another driver; others defended it as a traditional bump-and-run. The debate grew heated, with sniping between posters.

Gee, I didn't mean to wreck Terry. Yea, right. Maybe they should take a lap or two away and let Dale sit for a couple of races. Nascar took two laps away from someone for running in to the back of Jarrett when he was going slow. Earnhardt wrecks too many people and should have to pay. Did you hear all the boo's? Don
I heard the booing. You'd have thought it was Jeff Gordon ;) I wonder if NASCAR will penalize him. If so I really can't see how it will make things better other than taking it away from Earnhardt. Spencer would win - Terry deserved it. Another close one for Tony Stewart... David Cook > Gee, I didn't mean to wreck Terry. Yea, right. i think the results should be finalized as they were running prior to the final wreck... but thats typical earnhardt...more than the moustache grew back....i think his evil ways did also

It was a typical Dale Earnahardt cheapshot. There was no reason for it. I personally think it should revert back to the pervious lap. Chris

Yeah i heard the boo's !! I am glad he spun that chump who does'nt have the balls to complain or the brains to know if you pass the intimidator on the last lap you could be in the wall !! Terry is to nice :)

Terry deserved it ? Terry should have burned the tires off in the last corner to keep # 3 off his back side !

Something needs to be done... believe me, when Dale took the lead, passing on the outside, it was awesome! To see him make a charge up to the front like that was awesome! The crowd was cheering for him too. But that last lap tap he put on Terry, was about the biggest bonehead move ever. Was not very smart driving on his part obiviously... and the fans were booing him. NASCAR will do something about it, not sure what, but that move screwed up alot of cars and really screwed up the finish of the race. If NASCAR doesn't do anything about it, then they will definitely have a serious problem facing them in the next few races with people doing what Dale did.

I actually LIKE Earnhardt, but I saw this one coming. When Terry passed him, I had a feeling DE wouldn't take it lying down. Yes, I heard the boos. It was a big difference from the CHEERS when Dale originally got the lead. So obviously, even the DE fans felt it was a cheap shot(including me) Of course, if it wasn't for DW, Terry wouldn't have be in that position in the FIRST place... Yeah everyone forgets how Labonte charged through 5 cars in 4 laps,he was driving like a madman! He ran into #3 twice, hey no problem its racing. The last turn though and everyone fails to notice he ran in too hard shot up the track and slowed a touch in the apex of the corner.Dale of course did touch him but it wasn't as bad as the radio made it sound.I've been watching racing for years and I've seen alot worse than that. These guys act like he dented in the back of the car!Only bad thing is my dads a Labonte fan so he had hard feelings towards me:)Oh well. OH Please...this type of thing is an extreem result of normal racing behavior. There was hundreds of bumps, pushes and rubs in that race. And a few resulted in spins. IMHO, this is a good example of the chief differences between NASCAR type racing and open wheel type racing, CART/IRL/F1 racing doesn't have bumping, rubbing, bump-drafting, "Full contact racing". It happens all day in NASCAR and a few times it results in spins and wrecks. Contact with another car in NASCAR is a technique, a skill, and for DE, an art form. Sure, it's a shame that Terry got bent up, but IMHO, he is too conservative, and the last few laps with the #3 in your mirror is no time to be conservative. I'm sure DE didn't mean to wreck him, but I'm sure DE ment to get him outta the way! This is why I LOVE NASCAR racing. It's why I LOVE Dale Earnhardt, he is not afraid to do all it takes to win when he is in a position to win. And next week, Terry will probably rub DE at Darlington.

Id love to see someone smack Earnhardt in the rear at Darlington while hes in the lead on the last lap!! Preferrably Terry so he gets even but i really dont care who it is...just as long as Earnhardt gets a taste of his own medicine. Chris

DE had no problem getting close enough to Terry to spin him. If you watch the video you'll see Earnhardt's front end pushing up as he gets into Terry's rear. It's obvious DE kept his foot in it far longer than would have been prudent had Labonte not been there. And don't forget the post race interview with Earnhardt where he admitted that he wanted to tap Labontes car "just to rattle him a little" (read: I hit him on purpose) -- See ya in the pits, Dean I have a terrible memory. In fact my memory's so bad I can't remember how long it's been since I've forgotten anything. > >Terry deserved it ? I thought that Earnhardt himself said in a post race interview that it was totally his fault that he crashed. He let his car drift out and get into Gordon coming out of turn 2 he said. Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited

People, People: Come on..it was one of those racing deals. Get a grip on it. They all want to win and have most probably done similar. Did you not see Spencer remind Rudd of this in the post race interview?? DE didnt try to wreck Terry on purpose. If you were around years ago, you would remember the Allisons, Jr., Cale, Buddy,Pearson and Petty racing real hard at one time or another. Turn your little clocks back--this is how it was and will be. For you "revisionists" who want to turn everything back--to the last lap, re-write the history books or whatever, cowboy up--its life. History and racing happens because it happened when it did--not because we want things "to be right." We cannot right every wrong or vice versa. If you were not around during the past(old) NASCAR years, grab a tape or book and study it. Educate yourselves. These hard racing deals are not new--just exciting!!! 471
Dale pretty much admitted trying to "rattle" Labonte by running into him. Such tactics have a long history in NASCAR and Dale has built his "Intimidator" reputation by driving in this style. Over the past couple of years we have seen NASCAR trying to clean up the rough and tumble image and go more "corprate". The question NASCAR must answer is whether or not this is good for the image they are trying to market to their fans. Based on the ESPN survey I saw on the website and the thunderous booing from the stands, I would say it is not a good thing for NASCAR. What can they do about it? Not much, IMHO. There is a history of letting race results stand for much worse infractions than we saw last night. Trick engine parts, out of spec spoilers and the like. I can't remember the last time somebody lost a race win for a rules violation. Anybody?

You...and your kind are why NASCAR will never be taken seriously as a TRUE racing series. NASCAR is and continues to be very popular in the U.S. but is becoming more of a circus or WWF style event than a racing series because people like you condone Ironhead's actions. I can read the thought bubble over your head........"I'ma gonna get me some tickets to Darlington to see if Terry get's Dale back". Which is all great for NASCAR but bad for motorsports in general. this is why i watch CART if 2 people hit, generally both people go out, or are damaged (not always, generally). Hitting someone to get them out of your way just doesn't happen in CART, or any other type of open wheel racing for that matter. the jackass driving style of zanardi pissed me off...but he's gone...and montoya took his place and has a much better driving style. Montoya is just plain GREAT.

I am not a big NASCAR fan (F1 and CART for me), but I did happen to catch most of the race last night. My question is, why did they penalize one guy (#36, I think) 2 entire laps for tapping a guy inadvertantly (he (88?) was running VERY slowly and admitted he got in the way of the guy who hit him), and then turn a blind eye when Earnhart decided the race with an INTENTIONAL move? That is completely backwards, if you ask me. Can someone please explain the logic there? I'm not asking to be told 'it happens all the time' -- if it does, they would not have docked the first guy 2 laps..... Thanks...
You're right it doesn't make sense. The only thing I can see for 36's penalty is that he could easily gone around Jarrett but I think he was too busy looking in his mirror and trying not to be put a lap down that he forgot to look forward. In that case he deserves a penalty. Now as far as Earnhardt goes I don't know. He admitted that he hit Terry on purpose in the victory lane interview but later at the press conference he wouldn't admit it. I also saw that Marcis was penalized for causing a yellow. I guess he's had help from Childress racing previously and with Earnhardt pitting on the back straight NASCAR thought something hinky was up. -- Thanks Michael Horton Webmaster of http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/gpl Home of the F2/F3 Hotlaps Webmaster of http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/html HTML for Beginners > >People, People: > >Come on..it was one of those racing deals. > >Get a grip on it. Coot maybe the terms chump, balls & brains was a bit harsh ( i had knocked the frost off a few before the post ) The Winston Cup Series is as true as it gets IMHO. If you think ironhead driving hard as hell on the last lap of a race to win is like the wwf your high !!! I hate the circus & wrestling but have to love a stock car race where a driver will lightly rattle a friend to visit victory lane :) By the way I'ma gonna watch the race on tv not to see Terry pay Dale back but to see the man in black autograph someone's door with his tire as he blows by !!!!!!! > > Yeah i heard the boo's !! You make a very good point. Earnhardt wrecked Terry on purpose and should not get the win. Nascar officials have little bitty balls.
Kinny Vinso 30 Aug 1999#488738
First thing, Earhardt was pitting on the back stretch. This is a DISADVANTAGE under caution. Under a green flag pit stop, there would have been no loss of time getting in and out of the pits assuming the Goodwrench had a good pit stop. i.e., Nascar made a bonehead move penalizing Marcis for that. Pitting under caution was no help to the Childress #3 team. Second thing, in a post race interview with Terry Labonte on PRN, he admitted that he lifted to try to slow Dale down once he passed him. What a bonehead thing to do. He had four sticker tires, was clearly the fastest thing on the track, and he was worried about slowing down a car on old tires. He should have, and could have, just driven away and taken the victory. Kinny Vinson > You're right it doesn't make sense. Mackin, That's not the point. I've lost respect for NASCAR after their decision to let the Bristol results stand. Why penalize Todd Bodine when Dale Jarrett got in his way. Dale Jarrett should of gotten the black flag for being to freakin' slow to begin with, it's obvious who has the biggest sponsor and who goes fishing with Bill France that has the rulings go their way. NASCAR OFFICIALS are obviously there in uniform only, and don't have a clue of the impact they just made on this sport, by going against their own rules. I hope Terry gets his revenge on the so-called man-in-black. Ridiculous! Never did like that Earnhardt character, and after that Bristol race, I've lost all respect for him. Maybe he should just retire to TEN/NROS and race in pickup races, that's all he's good for now. Then he can blame it on a warp. LOL
Steve Ko 30 Aug 1999#488740
I don't know if any of you were watching but, terry almost wrecked mark martin on his little charge back to the front. Terry booted the #88 on the last lap in a race last year to get his only win in '98'. If he could drive there would not have even been a wreck. The same thing happened at bristle with #24 and #2 on the last lap, but rusty can drive. Every driver will tell you 'you beat on me your fair game'. Last lap? they all do it.
Marty U'Ren 30 Aug 1999#488741
Clean drivers race clean...dirty drivers race dirty. Earnhardt has used dirty driving to take out faster cars his whole career and has got away with it because the Nascar fans have loved it. Labonte on the other had is one of the cleanest drivers their is. Who's image has made the most money in Nascar? But this time the fans didnt approve of dirty driving.. Perhaps stock car racing will finally have to grow out of it's macho-redneck image or suffer the consequences to it's bottom line. Marty > Gee, I didn't mean to wreck Terry. Yea, right. NaScArNuT they penalized Bodine because he's Busch League ! The Intimidator is the 7 time champ who does'nt win much anymore so they let it slide . Example's Basketball: Jordan can foul a guy till he bleed's - no call Baseball : Nolan Ryan can uppercut a guy 5 times & bust his lip - the guy with the fat lip get's thrown out Nolan stay's in the game . The point to the story is Nascar loves his ASS !!!!! :)

It is the same almost everywhere in American Sports. Do you think a Rookie would get a charging call against Micheal Jordan even if he was firmly established? Sports honcho's learned a long time ago, most (uh oh, generalized statement coming) We Americans don't show up to watch a football game or auto race, we show to see our stars race.... dave henrie
...except touring cars do it much slower with nice run off areas (usually). You probably do see more paint swapping in the BTCC, but it never makes me wince like it does with the NASCAR guys... Cheers, Mark Reading, UK

For me the reason why I hated his move so much was that Terry had the better car. The ONLY way DE was going to win that race was to crash him, and that just goes against everyting that sport should be about. I am also dissappointed with NASCAR. They should let the win stand, but strip him of all points and money won. This way that finish will have a larger impact on the points, which it needs because DJ is running away with the show. (Of course with the current point system it still won't make a big dent). Of course NASCAR would never do anything to tarnish the image of DE, so they will remain quiet. This brings up another point. With Darrell Waltrip retiring, Ricky Rudd not far behind, and DE some time after that, where does NASCAR get it's new personalities. I really like Steve Park, but he is no Darrell Waltrip. NASCAR in the next five years is going to lose all of it major stars, with no replacements in sight. (Yeah I know we get to keep GameBoy Gordon, but after him the list is short.) So I agree that it was favoritism, but they have to build this sport up for the coming lean times. The Mocker

Based on what I've read on it, it seems that this one will be even more of a resource-hog than Win98 was. I never upgraded (?) to that. I've kept the OSR2.1 Win95 around just for my ***. Here's hoping for a GPL Linux port! Hell, while we're hoping, N3 and Cart2 for Linux!! The only crashin' I want done is due to my own driving, not my OS!!! Cheers -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

<Disclaimer> I'm a longtime Earnhardt fan. </Disclamer> What was said above is EXACTLY what I was thinking - rubbin's racin' - TO AN EXTENT! I believe that Dale intentionally touched Terry. I DON'T think he intentionally spun him - that was a pretty light tap and he was pretty much in the center of the bumper (not on the left corner). That said I think he should be penalized for being too aggressive: maybe a fine or something. But altering the finish of the race is uncalled for. Gunner
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491026
LOL! It's only the fastest growing Motorsport of all time. Nah. It's not taken seriously... Stuff happens. The tap wasn't that bad. It WAS on purpose, but the intent was to loosen him up and make him go up the track. It's done damn near every race by someone. Several times per race, in fact by different people. Terry just lost it. Bad deal, but it happens. -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491027
Well, AJ Foyt is back. Give it time... :) -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491028
I really don't think he meant to wreck him. He DID intend to bump him and send him up the track out of the way. That much is clear. He just got a little over-agressive this time. They ALL do it. Including Gordon. Dale has been sent to the wall more than once the same way. It happens. -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491029
He'll just do a 360 and go on to win the race. That's the difference between Earnhardt and some others. He can take what he dishes. -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491030
Yeah, and I HATE it. I want Nascar like it was in the 80's. Drivers driving drivers, not restrictor plates. -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491031
No, No, NO. He didn't wreck him on purpose. He TAPPED him on purpose. It's a standard Nascar move that's been done for 50 years. Ya tap em', and they wiggle up the track a bit, and you dive under. Bump & Run. It's not new. It happens several times in EVERY race. Terry lost it. It happens. It's happened to Earnhardt (well, not much ) ). It will happen to Labonte again, and it will happen to Earnhardt again. It will happen to every driver on that track. It's racing. Bad luck sometimes happens. -Larry
Larry 08 Sep 1999#491032

Someone shoot me. -Larry > Clean drivers race clean...dirty drivers race dirty. > Earnhardt has used dirty driving to take out faster cars his whole career and has > got away with it because the Nascar fans have loved it. "Drivers driving drivers"? Sounds more like a Village People type of event... :-) Cheers! John
The reason Terry "lost it" was because he had been thumped from behind. Rubbing may well be allowed, the odd "love tap" acceptable but if Earnhardt screwed up and hit him too hard to steal a race win then he should be man enough to admit it, indeed even refuse the win. That's a LOW way to win a race, I'd hang my head in shame. Cheers! John
