In the past 3 weeks, I was suffering from a problem that seem impossible
to cure until finally I put the finger on the cause of it. With the
venue
of GPL 1.1 there's some people without problems, others suffer badly
from
frame stutter (offline and / or online), now commonly known as slomo /
turbo frame rate. Rather difficult to drive this way. Yesterday, in an
ultimate attempt to cure it (i was gonna give up {g}, finally got it!!

Hope this will help some of you :)
BTW I still need about 45 people to fill the GPL RACERS SURVEY
For those who haven't done it, please check it out.

Eric, my slow-mo problems were gone after I reinstalled windows. To be
sure that the install was 100& fresh I first deleted my windows
directory, then I did the new install. No more problems after that.
After I read your explanation, it can be that before I installed
windows again I also had irq conflicts. Now I don't have them and
everything is working perfect again.
But I still wonder why the problems only came after the patch... what
has changed since the patch that GPL becomes so vulnerable for irq
conflics?

conflicts or sharing whatsoever. When I recently installed a Hercules
Thriller 3D, I noticed that the slo mo was virtually eliminated on that card
while it remains on my V2, with no other changes to the system. Then,
playing around a bit with slots and IRQ's, I managed to get a bunch of
things, including the Thriller, sharing and overlapping (but not officially
conflicting in Windows) and there is still almost no slo mo with the
Thriller. This is a hugely complex problem that is going to take a lot of
testing to resolve. I am officially volunteering for beta testing duty here
and now. We owe it to Randy and the others who tried to help us out (with
more GPL features) to get this mess resolved as quickly and efficiently as
possible.
Marc.
Like I've explained, my created the problem by going with
a LWFF that runs on USB, i had a potential conflict before, but
since i never used the USB in GPL it was potent only.

although it may work for some happy people. I don't see how one can get away
without irq sharing on a pretty normal system which has the necessary
hardware for Ethernet, WAN, decent sound and graphics, USB etc. And you
probably cannot expect the average user to fiddle with his system resources
just to work around this. I also have the (offline) slowmo problem (on a 333
MHz Pentium II with 128 MB RAM and V3-2000), and I tried everything, from
the tweaks described in the VROC 1.1 FAQ up to reinstalling Windows from
scratch. Following your remarks I now also disabled everything except the
most basic devices. Nothing cures this problem for me. It's a bug in the
software, such things happen -- realtime programming is very complex. :-)
Since this apparently happens on many systems, I have hope that Papy can
reproduce it as well. This does not mean that it's easy to fix, though, so I
guess we should not hold our breath until the next patch comes out.
Anyway, GPL is such a _marvellous_ piece of software, I can certainly be
patient enough to wait until Papy sorts this out. Meanwhile, I am back to
the 1.0 version which runs without a flaw on my system (I miss FF, though
;-).
Go ahead, Papy, and keep up the good work!

Another point....do you still get the above 36 fps happening now that you
have rid yourself of the slo mo??
I think if your frame rates are still weird, you are in the same boat as I
am with the Thriller....minimal slo mo, but you can't trust the lap times...
Marc.
As I understand it, 'they' found the slomo sync problem shortly after 1.1 was
released and fixed shortly after that.
But, the new patch with the fix has to go through a complete testing cycle
before it's released. Apparently not only are the problems fixed but the online
play is better than it's ever been.
If it helps, patience is a virtue. :-)

was known early on and is now fixed.
Plus, the opportunity to tune the online communications will give us the best
online play ever.

but rather frame stutter. That problem is cured, and my FPS counter
stays at 36 FPS

Has anyone from Papy already commented publicly on what the status of the

Same with me. PIII450,V3 3000,SBLiveValue,LWFF USB. I only get slow-mo, when
the fps are lower than 36 (at the start of a race with 19 AI and too much
graphics). Offline, that is, as I don't quite feel ready yet to inflict my
driving on *real* people... :-)

I also have been using a LWFF USB, and have not had any slo-mo effects at
all with 1.1. I do use a Hercules Thriller, with all the "eye candy" on,
except only cars in the mirrors.

I don't know > >whether there's been a survey (sorry: again a survey, but I think thisHi Eric,
As an addendum to my earlier posts about this problem, I just experienced
the frame stutter problem for the first time!!
I have been having a major problem with my nightly backup since installing
the Thriller3D card. I have been using the task scheduler to run an
automated backup for years and the process locks-up sometimes--freezing my
computer. It only happens with the Thriller3D, and now I have discovered a
new clue. It seems to only have a problem if I have run GPL (1.1) (the only
program I use that uses the Rendition acceleration of the Thriller)
beforehand (in the current boot).
A friend suggested that I try running a small app., like the clock or
something, a minute or two ahead of the scheduled backup to see if that
might wake up the computer or the Thriller a little more thoroughly. When I
tried to add a new item to the scheduler (the clock), the computer prompted
me for my Office2000 CD!?!?!?! I wondered what was happening until I
realised that O2000 was updating the task scheduler itself. I had done a
custom install of O2000 and I guess I did not select whatever updates the
scheduler. Then, I thought, great! Maybe my lock-ups won't occur anymore
as the scheduler itself has been updated. (We'll find out tonight.)
After a reboot, I started GPL and the frame stuttering problem was
immediately apparent. Very problematic and ruined the game. There was also
a definite appearance of some of the slo mo effect I get consistently with
the Voodoo2 card. I switched back to 3dfx, and the slo mo seemed to be even
worse than before. Switched back to Rendition, and back to stuttering. I
exited GPL and turned off (paused) the task scheduler--stuttering gone.
Exit again and switch the scheduler on--back to stuttering in GPL.
After a few more reboots and playing around with the scheduler, I have
managed to get back to where I was--no stuttering in either version and slo
mo in 3dfx only. Hopefully, my automatic backup lock-up will be helped by
the new scheduler files, but it sure taught me that the scheduler can have a
major effect on the smoothness and operation of GPL.
Another one here, with all eye candy on.
