Sprint Car sim?

I heard maybe a year ago about a racing sim based on the World of Outlaws (WOO!!!). Does anyone know if there is one planned on sprint cars or the like? It seems like it just might be an interesting idea.
The closest we are going to get is Dirt Track Racing by Ratbag Games. This will have sedans as a start off. I had an email discussion with one of the guys developing the game and Sprintcars are a possibility for a future version ; DTR 2 perhaps? The main problem with doing them in the game now is modelling the physics caused by the wings. (Sliding physics used to be a *** but Ratbag have it down)They do it for plane sims I realise, but there is a hell of a difference between a sedan's aerodynamics and a Sprintcar's. Must admit it would be a great sim. It would beat rallying hands down. Maybe we could get the chance to beat Steve Kinser. The closest you'll get is Powerslide's speedway track. One of the cars you can select is a Madmax mongrelised speedcar/wingless sprintcar looking thing. Heaps of fun. If anyone knows of other Speedway developments please let us know. > I heard maybe a year ago about a racing sim based on the World of > Outlaws (WOO!!!). Doesn't Sierra / Papyrus already have a basis for the physics / foundation for World of Outlaw type Sprint Car Racing?? I believe if you take a look at S.O.D.A. Offroad Racing, you'll see they have the 'broadsliding / powersliding' technique of the Sprint Cars already started with their buggy, 4 X 4 and pickup, am I right on that guys? Brian

On the subject of SODA, here's an excerpt from an interesting post on the CompuServe Sports Sim forum: ====== There was a theory that SODA (done by an outside developer and published by Papy) was a "preview" of the GPL physics engine (in much the same way GPL was supposed to presage N3's physics engine), and indeed, there are some similiarities...including the way the suspension appears to "move" (in both it doesn't really move; it stretches). Be that as it may, it was a great game in its own right (and offered flawless multiplayer on my home LAN), in its day...but it's day has come and gone, as I discovered the other day when I went to fire it up for old times' sake, and discovered it requires 256-color graphics! ====== I think that sums up SODA pretty well -- from a physics standpoint it might be wonderful, but it definitely lags too far behind in other areas to be considered any kind of a contender in its current form. I haven't tried SODA myself (I may rectify this soon -- it's in the bargain bin with a VERY cheap pricetag at Best Buys these days), but I have a feeling that RatBag's Dirt Track Racing is really going to blow our socks off. RaBag's Powerslide game has an awesome physics model for an arcade racer -- and as far as sims go, I think that in some ways it's in the same league as Viper Racing and GPL; it's certainly got a better handle on physics modeling than SCGT as far as I'm concerned. Dirt Track Racing is going to be targeting the sim racing crowd, and I think RatBag's going to impress all of us. -- John Bodin Publisher, The IRL Insider Magazine http://irlinsider.adnetweb.com/ >Doesn't Sierra / Papyrus already have a basis for the physics / foundation >for World of Outlaw type Sprint Car Racing?? Wingless Sprintcars and speedcars maybe the physics is similar but with that wing on top it changes things. The wing is a nuisance to ultimate top end speed but in the corners it comes into its own. If everything else was equal - track, horespower, suspension set up etc a winged Sprintcar would corner faster. The aerodynamics of a Sprintcar's wings become a huge factor in how they operate. You simply could not put a wing on top of the basic model in SODA or Powerslide/ Dirt Track Racing (leaving the physics untouched) and do Sprintcar racing justice. It would not be faithful. I hope someone finally gets to this type of game. It is a great spectacle.

My advice it to pick it up. If you do, I'll email you the Kokomo Speedway 1/4 mile dirt oval track that I made :) The buggies do a great imitation of a non-winged sprint car, though they are a bit under-powered. The 2WD trucks work a little better on an oval, but don't look as much like a sprint car! -- Pat Dotson >I haven't tried SODA myself (I may rectify this soon -- it's in the bargain >bin with a VERY cheap pricetag at Best Buys these days), but I have > >-- John Bodin

In a perfect world.....Yes! Papyrus has the perfect physics engine to model a sprint car sim, In the real world.......No! If it's not sanctioned by NASCAR Sierra will apply the brakes. Coot
