Best Car Simulator Ever

Is Sports Car GT the best car simulator ever?

A poster called Sports Car GT the best car simulator ever, prompting near-unanimous replies that GPL held that title. Jan Verschueren and others said SCGT's Porsches did not exhibit realistic lift-off oversteer, while some defended it in Pure Sim mode with setup changes. A side discussion covered how real teams measure tyre temperatures.

I have to say that the best car simulator ever is Sports Car GT. And there is probably nothing that anyone can say against the driving model of this game I have to say, is perfect. Schumacher

Grand Prix Legends by Papyrus. Matt, You have to remember that GPL and SCGT are two totally different racing games. To even compare the two really is not valid. If someone doesn't care to race the older GP cars, then they might want to go to the newer Grand Prix games like MGPRS2, or, if they enjoy racing something other than F1 cars, then Viper or SCGT might be the way to go. It depends on whether you want to simulate the "feel" of driving or the details of a certain type of racing series. I think a lot of people here are mainly looking for a sim that feels right, and since GPL is far and away the most detailed in that respect they've gravitated towards it even though it probably isn't the genre they're most interested in. Certainly that's my interest - I just wanted to experience what it's like to be "on the edge" in a racing car without actually risking life and limb in the process! GPL certainly seems to give the best impression of raw speed - you can just feel the car convulse when you put your foot down!

The subject says Best Car simulator ever, that is with out a doubt GPL. Sure MGPRS2 and SCGT are good, but they aren't even close to GPL.
Hehehe apart from the fact you can't even get the Porsches to exhibit oversteer, which is kinda weird for a car that has 68% of it's weight in the rear, no?? Maybe your not driving fast enough? Try SCGT with Pure Sim mode it does the trick for me. http://members.home.net/mondsj/scgt/index.htm - Fourth picture down (pure sim mode in the rain, now that's fun!) Jason.

It may not be perfect, but you can and do get oversteer. It feels adequate to me. Ok, well you have way more experience in driving the real thing than me. I agree with the "not enough" comment, but you said "you can't even get the Porsches to exhibit oversteer". I was just showing you my oversteering Porche :-D I think it does a good job overall. The garage is kinda weak in that the adjustments are simplified in terms of understeer/oversteer and there are no tire temps. Umm, have you tried making the front suspension soft and the rear hard. Put the front wing full and remove all rear wing. This should produce the most oversteering car.

try GPL; it's the BEST car simulator there is; Driving makes me feel like i'm in a car better than any other, including Sports Car GT. That's an excellent simulator, though, no doubt.
I didn't get a chance to test the rain mode, but I was in Pure Sim mode in the dry. Backing out mid corner should send you spinning like a top. Maybe it's my steering wheel setup, as I got some reaction using keys and joystick, but not enough IMO. I've driven a race prepared Porsche Carrera, and while they can be surprisingly pushy when you stay within the adhesion limit of the rear socks, you can't take the liberties with them you can in the game. And did I drive fast enough?? -I won, so I guess it was fast enough... ;-)) Now, of course, I have no reference on the cars in GPL, but SCGT is way off IMO. Much too docile... the cars don't bite back. Shame. Please note that I'm especially harsh on SCGT as it was hyped up to be a sim (again, more by the press than by the developers themselves), when in fact it sits firmly in the halfway category. Well my 911 expirences are probly less then your, but lifting in the middle of a corner in an old torsenbar 911 would make the car oversteer badly. Luckily I was not on the street or a race track just a Autocross course, so it was hamless. The 911 felt pretty good to me in the game. The Saleen seems to turn in and go thru mid corner very close to my current Autocrosser. Dave

Viper Racing is so fake. The thing oversteers way too much and the burn outs are impossible to control, and what the hell is thay stupid wheely feature? Well tracks are fake but I find the driving feel very good. The wheelie thing is a very good joke. Tapani
Sure, in the rain. Not on a dry road. I ran the Porsche all the way through the GTQ through GT2 and not once did I ever have to worry about the rear end*** out on me suddenly, a 911 classic. Only time I bothered to change a setup was at a rain race at Road Atlanta, other than that it was all default. Um, sorta...for a halfway point between an arcade racer and a simulation. Lets put it this way: it does not model tire temps, so its not much of a simulation by today's standards if it doesnt. And exactly why would I want to do that? I want the car to behave exactly as it would real life, or close enough as possible, w/o having to create bogus setups just to enduce behaviour close to the real car?
Jason Monds 12 Aug 1999#485394
> > Umm, have you tried making the front suspension soft and the rear > > hard. Put the front wing full and remove all rear wing. This should > produce > > the most oversteering car. > And exactly why would I want to do that? Just because you can ;-) I'm all for realism, but maybe you have to help SCGT become more realistic. If you go into the garage you'll find the suspension is tuned to produce an understeering car. The first thing I do is soften the front and stiffen the rear to get good grip when turning. One other important thing to check out is the Garage / Other tab. There is a weight bias slider and I think (I'm not a home right now) that you cannot get a 68% bias toward the rear -- maybe only 55%. That could be the reason why it's easier to handle than real life. ------- Jason Monds "My other car is a Ferrari" http://members.home.net/gpl.mondsj/gpl - For my combined gas/brake setups (Please remove 'no extra spork' when replying)
According to the developer/publisher it "IS" realistic and therefore you shouldnt have to help it. And you definetly should not have to help it through bogus setups. Never noticed that now that I think of it. But that makes the game even less real.

I don't think it's scary. "Au contraire", I think it is beneficial for us, Papyrus and all the other companies also. We have been criticizing the new racing software much more because GPL has really biased us. On the good side, of course. So if a company wants to impress us, they have to create something at least close to GPL. We accept that the physics might be a little less complex than the new Papyrus game engine, since we understand that it's very hard especially for companies who create their first title in the racing market. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... This got me thinking....in real life, how do they monitor tire temps. I mean, is their a temperature sensor in the tire itself? Can they only take a surface temperature of the tire once it has returned to the pits and is it just a matter of holding some kind of thermometer against the tread? -Tim
Not necessarily, you need to have a minumum weight after all. If you manage to underbid that by quite a margin (while retaining structural integrity, of course), you can "top up" and place extra weight where you think you need it. I'll admit I maybe didn't spend long enough on the game (had it on loan from a friend), but what I experienced didn't exactly entice me to explore further. I thought the career option, for example, was poorly implemented. Buy a car and win some easy races. Buy another car and win some more races, .... need I go on ? I think the only way to push developers and publisher into making good games, is not to buy the average ones. And for me, SCGT is decidedly average. I've seen the technicans at F1 races put contact probes on tires and measure the temp in 4 or 5 locations across the tread. I don't know if they have any telemetry on tire temps while they're on the track. But it wouldn't be hard to hook up a infra red temperature sensor (no contact required)on the car to read the tempurature in real time. I use a similar device to measure tool tempuratures at injection molders. I'm not sure where you would put the sensor to get a good reading on the front tires though. Maybe facing rearward on the front wings. Glenn White > This got me thinking....in real life, how do they monitor tire temps. I > mean, is their a temperature sensor in the tire itself? I've read in several places (I even think one of'em was '4-wheel drift' supplied with GPL) that in modern cars they monitor tire temps continuously. I've been wondering how they pull it off as well though. My best guess so far is the same as another poster in this thread, remote IR sensing. Anyone with a bit of technical insight into this? Cheers, /ft

Yup, AFAIK, that's how it's done. I remember years ago Win Percy had a monstrous accident at Le Mans (on Les Hunadieres) with his Jaguar XJR-9 Sportscar because of a tire blowout. Apparently, one "gum" of used *** had clogged up the sensor, so they didn't see the temp going up, and had no chance to warn him. At least I seem to remember that being the case :) Matt -- --------------------------------- Matthew Birger Knutsen The Art of Legends; http://www.gpl.electra.no Cheek Racing Cars; http://www.cheekracing.electra.no

Hey what can I say? I bought GPL after the FF patch and it is certainly head & shoulders above the rest. I'm thinking about removing F1RS ;-) I should point out that the awesome FF implementation is the *ONLY* thing which swayed me. I have tried them all. I am not a fan of GPL I did not enjoy it due to its complexity. I don't have weeks to learn to drive a damn car. F1RS2 is my favorite. A perfectly valid opinion - I believe what you're saying is that you want a *game*, not a simulator - and there's nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, I believe the question in the title of this post was "Which is the best car simulator ever?", and this title certainly goes to Grand Prix Legends. It's also a great game, if you're looking for a true challenge! > > I have to say that the best car simulator ever is Sports Car GT. I've only ever played the demo of SCGT but from that, cannot believe that it compare the two true driving sims out there: Grand Prix Legends and Cart Precision Racing. GPL is much easier to get up and running. CPR is easier to master. Both have equally excellent physics. -- Mark Jeangerard www.soundchaserweb.com New Mexico USA

<<I am not sure how they do it now, but I know in years past we used our hand to detect the heat ...either being hotter in the center, inside, or outside just after a practice session. Then we graduated to the high tech stuff ... a digital thermometer that we poked into the tire ... once again right after a practice session. I too would be interested to know the how to on tire temp telemetry being on board. I know in Nascar they are not allowed any onboard telemetry during a race, but during testing it is widely used ... once again though I don't know about onboard tire temp, or even a feed to the pits. Interesting thought though. /Wiley>> I would suspect that they have IR sensors mounted in the wheel well area which would either record, or read out to the driver/crew via remote. TK
