I was told that the formula for converting a lap "time" to a lap "speed"
(1:24.977 vs xxxx mph) was this way..
Distance in miles
divided by
total number of SECONDS
multiplied by
3600
equals
average mph
I tried this and found that for Kyalomi at 2.5444 miles and a lap time
of 1:24.977 = 99077.039999 mph. WOW am I fast or is this the wrong
formula? Maybe I have my application doing the math wrong. Either way,
what is the right formula?

Hello Micheal,
To calculate the average lap speed divide the distance travelled by the time
taken. If you are want it in mph, then as you suggest, divide the track
length by the lap time (in seconds - 1:24.977 minutes = 84.977 seconds by my
estimation :-) this gives the answer in miles per second. To convert this to
miles per hour, multiply the answer by 3600.
I think the application is doing the math wrong, as your reasoning is
correct. The calculator comes up with an average lap time of 107.78 mph
based on the info you provided.
Bye,
Ian
Something wrong there.... I get 107.79mph using the same calcutlation (which
is right BTW).
2.5444 miles / 84.977 seconds x 3600 seconds per hour = 107.79mph.
Replace batteries in calculator or read spreadsheet manual.

>I was told that the formula for converting a lap "time" to a lap "speed"
<snip>
AVG Speed = Distance/Time (MPH or KM/H)
Distance=2.5444 miles = 2.5444*1609 metres = 4.094 km
Time=1:24.977 minutes = 84.977 seconds
AVG Speed/second = 2.544/84.977 = 0.0299 MPS
= 4.094/84.977 = 0.0482 KM/S
AVG Speed/hour = 3600*0.0299 = 107.64 MPH
= 3600*0.0482 = 173.52 KM/H
(my calculator does round the numbers up to 2 decimals - this introduces some
small rounding errors)
That's all there is to it. Must have been a very strange calculator you're
using.

Ive made an excel 97 worksheet that allows you to compare different laptimes
:
Driver A with car A vs Driver A with car B
or
Driver A with car A vs Driver B with car A
or
Driver A with car A vs Driver B with car B
or
Driver A with his best car vs Driver B with car A or B or C or best or
whatever ....
and all sort of combinations ...
someone interested ?
