I have seen some odd posts (i think about this "game(?)). Just what is it? I checked out the web page listed here but don't see anything about it. Thanks, Mike Barlow

Whew, thank goddnes because that demo sucked. It gave me the impression that Midtown Madness is the better city driving game. Even though I have the full version of MM, the demo version of MM was excellent, even though a miniscule part of the highway is made available, which is made favorite part of the map since the highway goes on for a great distance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- Guys, I just read this at The Adrenaline Vault: "Those of you who downloaded the recently released Driver demo might be surprised to hear it was never intended for public consumption. Too late, I already got it. I installed, I played, I liked!! ;-) Jan. ------ Guys, <snip>
It's a every great movie car chase scene crammed into a game. Think Grand Theft Auto 3D, think Midtown Madness with a bigger city and better drone traffic. Demo was here this morning... http://www.3dfxmania.com/games/driver.shtml Buzz me on ICQ and I'll show you how to hack it for more seat time. That Demo was not going to be released for another couple weeks. As it stands now, the demo is only talked about in the link you gave me. Thanks any how :) Mike

Hmmmm.... I don't think you read enough of the posts about the demo. Then again, even without hacking yourself some extra time, it's possible to beat the cop. Can't do it with losing a hubcap tho'. Personally, I think Driver and MM can co-exist nicely. The former being more interesting to race, the latter more fun to cruise. Jan. ------ >Whew, thank goddnes because that demo sucked. Does anybody know of another place to get this???

Umm, I did beat the cop VERY easily, it's just that there is a 1 minute cap on the playing time and no time to explore. From your previous post, you HAVE to be kidding me to say that the cities in Driver are larger than the one in MM. Combined, I don't even think it reaches the size of virtual Chicago in MM. As long as Driver has interesting environments and great gameplay, I'll get it. What annoys me now is that you can hardly see the traffic lights in this game. > Hmmmm.... Well, I downloaded it in a hurry, so I've got and play it alot - modified so I can explore some. Anyway, I can give you the name of the file and you can just do an FTP search. The file is: driverdemo.zip I haven't checked to see if it's still on the net, but you could try. And, no, I won't send it to anyone, it's 14 megs, which took me an hour and a half to get. Uploading it is twice as long... Good Luck! =-Rigs-= 'Get it while it's here, it won't be there when you get back' > If anyone finds out where this demo is at now, please post it. I agree, what makes it seem bigger to all these people is that it has these long stretches of road...but no side streets. But MM is kinda bad too, they really shrunk the city and jammed the notable places together...it would take 10 times the space if they made the city realistic in size and kept all those landmarks. I have not seen the PSX version, but with LA, NY, SF, and Miami it'll be larger than MM, also this is suppsed to be fairly old (it can't be 4 months...some files are only a month or 2 old) so maybe they added more streets...none-the-less when I beta tested MM I was expecting something more like this. As far as limits on the game try the hacks I use, they make it a bit harder since I have to shake 5 or 6 cops. I have been able to do it in 3 turns, no damage and no missing hub caps..so beat that. ;-) In the dir (Driver Demo\Scripts\Missions) edit the file (mission661.dms) so you have use these values for their selected lines: SetMaximumCops 9 Cops_on Cop_Respawn 99999 EnablePlayerDamage MaxPlayerDamage 24576 //( 0 -> 4096*6 is range ) //DebugInfo 1 Countdown 215999 //demo timer ForceFelonyRating 9 wait 1 cops_on wait 1 Cops_off InformPlayerById 10,3 StopTimer wait 5000 MissionEnd This should make it a bit tougher and let you explore the entire map...Dodge Island would be a very cool place in the real game, it could be a "base". I wonder if I turn the Cops_off at the end to on if I can still be picked up for speeding and what-not, I'll see. :-)

hehehe... I managed to ditch the one cop without losing anything in 17 seconds flat since my last post (using a different car). I 'll try to edit in some more adversaries and see how I go. I still say Driver maps are bigger... the downtown section is as intricate as MM's Chicago with lot's more nooks and cranny's to explore. And from a gameplay point of view Driver beats MM hands down. There's one little niggle... damage increases as you keep touching a car... eventhough such a maneuver would incur very little extra damage (have seen and done my share of banger racing to know it wouldn't)... it's as if the other car were poisonous. if your mailbox can handle it... I'll send it to ya... otherwise any public FTP where it would be welcome.... Jan. ------ >Well, I downloaded it in a hurry, so I've got and play it alot - ><snip>

I noticed this too, after shaking the cops I ventured back into the garage and lightly tapped a car, to my suprise my hood really popped up into my face and made my view very difficult, in real life the worst thing that would have happend was ascratch to my fender. But one thing I liked about that was the car has a alarm which is triggered. I wonder if you are trying to sneek away from the cops if that alarm would alert them to your location... -- Jon Van Ginneken
Yeah, thought that was neat too. There's more stuff like that, like scaring birds from trees if you scrape them. Can't wait to see the "real" demo. Have you noticed how much better the drone traffic behaves too? In MM when you're waiting at the lights cars coming up behind you crash into the scenery or into eachoter as they try to overtake you. Those in driver seem to really know you're there and just stop behind. Although I find them a little "static" on the long stretches (no differences in speed, no lane changing or overtaking). Me too, but I wonder if the city will be any bigger, my hope is it actually is a mission instead of just lose the tail...I wanna be waiting outside a bank in downtown and have to make it to those houses with the garages with 5 or more cops coming after me. :-) I see lane changing quite often, but the poor textures don't let you know they are changing lanes (you really just have to look if the have a turn signal on)...I find the roads a bit confusing with the double line in one-way traffic...should be a dotted line on the major roads since they have a median seperating the traffic directions. I don't know about smart AI...a few times I have had a green light and all the sudden a car makes a left hand turn through the entire intersection (it's ok if it's 1-way on 1-way, but don't use up the whole road please :-). Oh yeah and magically some ars just disappear going to Dodge Island, even on the N-S road that is the furthest east street, and I seem to notice 2-way streets becoming 1 way streets later on when I sometimes backtrack to lose the tail...some weird stuff, but much better gameplay than MM. -- Jon Van Ginneken "I try to do my best every day. Have you notice that the pedestrian traffic RUNS red lights in the game. For example, you see the person in front has their blinker on to make a left turn. The light in front of them is green, but they just sit there. When the light turns red, THEN it makes the turn toward the green light meant for traffic going perpendicular to them. This is some wierd, and dangerous AI. However, at this point, I don't agree that Driver plays better, or is more enjoyable than MM. MM has more ambience, has more stuff to look at, better textures, denser traffic, interesting road layout instead of stretches of straight roads with hardly any break in it, and repetitive buildings with blah textures. There also isn't any doppler effect when a car whizzes by. Please keep in mind that I'm comparing the Driver demo to the full version of MM, but I think the MM demo blew the Driver demo away. Also, in MM, cars don't act like drones and drive at a certain speed in a straight line and they stay reasonably close to each other. They are also very vigilant with getting the hell out of your way when you're driving head on into them. They make very convincing evasive maneuvers that has a fifty percent chance of weaving out of your way unless they reacted too late. In the Driver demo, I was being chased and got on the wrong side of the road, and the ploddingly slow pedestrian drivers made zero effort at dodging me and I crash into them every time.
