GPL and SMP

I've been looking at racing GPL online, and it seems the serial port buffers are the weak link. However, with GPL v1.1 supporting SMP, will a dual processor system help in dealing with the serial port buffers? Does WinNT have the same probs as Win9x in this area? Cheers MM
