Looks like Sega is makkiing use of it's licence. [link lost in import] I saw an import Dreamcast in the local console shop the other day. The machine is very impressive, do not get fooled my numbers..console systems are very different from Pc's On a Pc you need 128megs of ram for above average performance..on a console you need 10 to do the same job..totally different machine. The guy almost talked me into preordering one :)

I read somewhere that pc peripherals can be used, so that could be a cool proposition. I have downloaded a video demo (18 sec only) of an upcoming F1 game for the Dreamcast. The graphics and sounds were impressive and the gameplay seemed very smooth. I might just buy for some of the racing game. Maybe we can race at Daytona (Sega has the licensing agreement). Philster

It's a stunning piece of video game I agree. There was a 10minute interview with producers of the game up here that I saw. The graphics are stunning, track accuracy was great (showed Toronto), but I guess it is marketed as an arcade-style game, since there was no mention at all of simulation approach to it. I really hope it's at least above Icr2 in terms of physics. I really want to see how they can achieve their Daytona International Speedway license into a game that can outperform the pure arcade fun of the original Daytona500. Because at least they should use that precious license carefully. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- May the Downforce be with you... Not from what I have seen and heard. I suppose someone may be able to make a convertor but there's no support from the box. M

Good question. My guess is that right now Sega doesn't want to deflect any attention away from the Dreamcast. I wouldn't expect them to port it anytime soon. Definitely closer to SCGT, OF1R or TOCA in terms of its driving model..no GPL here. But it does look great and is, in my opinion, the best looking, most authentic graphical rendition of CART you've seen. The track accuracy is stellar, at least based upon my experience and the one track of I've been on in real life, Laguna Seca. Also, the frame rate never seems to drop, no matter how many cars are on the screen, which is something which can hardly be said of most PC sims. Randy

It is inevitable though - even though I havent gotten a GamePlayers or Next Generation for oh, a year or more, the last I read was that Dreamcast utilizes a lot of DirectX and even some WindowsCE stuff. So a port should be real easy for any Dreamcast game. (If it plays Saturn games too, then I may be lured back to Sega...otherwise, my next console could be a PSX2) -- Kirk Lane Tempe, AZ ICQ: 28171652 BRT #187 "I read dead Russian authors volumes at a time I write everything down except what's on my mind 'Cause my greatest fear is the sucking sound And then I know I'll never get back out" -'Narcolepsy', Third Eye Blind >Good question. It's not Papyrus' problem. It's CART. CART cries and whines about its low TV numbers and relatively low popularity compared to NASCAR, but it still SELLS its license rather than BUYING off developers. Do you think that Keammer and Co. wouldn't build a CART sim if it was funded by CART? Please! Kaemmer is an open-wheel guy and if the money could be made to work he'd make another CART sim in a heartbeat! The problem is that CART is too busy trying to SELL like NASCAR when it is in no position to do so. So, it unwittingly contributes to companies like EA and Papyrus developing NASCAR sims, which further increases NASCAR's popularity, which further DECREASES CART's visibility. Until CART realizes that as the less popular series it needs to be more aggressive by subsidizing and partnering with other companies and wooing them AWAY from NASCAR, we will continue to see more and more defections of CART-licensees to NASCAR and Formula One, where audiences/customers are larger. CART, wake up and fund a Papyrus sim. Until that happens, expect more annual NASCAR updates and nothing at all on the CART side. Randy

Remember you need to separate promises from reality. Sega is making these noises because they sound good. Whether or not things are that easy to port is a question which a PR guy cannot definitively answer. And whether or not it uses MS WinCE has NO relationship at all to whether or not Sega is going to do what it has to to compete. If Sega thinks that by NOT porting they will move more Dreamcasts and sell more software (which btw has higher royalties to Sega than PC games), then they will not port it. Ask yourself this: Why has Sony not ported Gran Turismo to the PC? Because they want the PLAYSTATION market to rule, not the PC market. Sega will do what it feels it must to make the DC succeed, and they really don't care what PC gamers have to say about it. This is indeed the basis of the whole console market: Sony and Sega make nothing at all (perhaps even a loss) on the consoles themselves, to ensure a low entry cost for consumers, then make it back in royalties on the games, because the games have to be licensed to run on the console. There is in fact an advantage to the consumer in this, in that really crappy games will not be given a licence (because they make the console look bad), but of course the real point of it is to make *** profits (which is fair enough, given the huge investment required to create and market the console in the first place). What you have to ask yourself is whether it's such a good idea for a console to run Windows CE, which will open the door to the same kinds of bug-ridden games that exist on the PC!

[SNIP].... Most of the 'bugs' in PC games are down to compatibility problems with software and hardware, it's not the OS which is at fault! This is because NO two PCs are the same! However, such problems do not occur with consoles since all N64s are the same, all Playstations are the same, all Dreamcasts are the same,... etc. Therefore Dreamcast games will have no more bug problems than that of any other console (and the title's released so far have confirmed this!). :) Dr Yassam Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. I agree totally - the real issue is how much control they'll have over the games and controllers that become available for the console. If they allow a free-for-all as on the PC it will probably lead to a similar situation - loads of games but loads of bugs. Of course, that won't happen because they'll want to have control over it so they can make money out of the games, so in short you are probably correct! On the other hand, that also removes some of the advantages of using a "standard" OS like Windows CE...

I just mentioned the whole CE thing because it makes it very possible to port them, and 3rd party developers, not having to eat the costs of the platform (which is friggin liquid cooled, so Sega has to be losin cash) but only licensing, will be able to port games. Really, it sounds like their only real course of action to prevent PC ports would be to make that a clause in the licensing. But then again, we could end up with those 'black cartridges' from the old NES - I think it was SNK or whoever that reverse-engineered it to get around licensing. They take a major hit on the consoles. Especially once the prices drop down to the $150 range where most of them are now. Though, like I said, companies have gotten around licensing. SNK actually won over Nintendo in court. And Sony isn't suing all those PSX emulators like Bleem 'cause they know it isn't worth the loss. But the disadvantage lies in the additional costs to the consumer. Don't try and BS me that a N64 cartridge costs that much more than a PSX CD. It may cost $10 compared to 5 cents, but the rest is ALL LICENSING. It also allows developers to go the other way. Imagine N3 (if it uses DirectX) on both PC and Dreamcast...and provisions built in to allow Dreamcast and PC players to race each other online. -- Kirk Lane Tempe, AZ ICQ: 28171652 BRT #187 "I read dead Russian authors volumes at a time I write everything down except what's on my mind 'Cause my greatest fear is the sucking sound And then I know I'll never get back out" -'Narcolepsy', Third Eye Blind

Obviously there are some DC games which are also out on the PC and for that matter, the PSX. Official Formula 1 Racing and Monaco Grand Prix are now out for everything, and I played OF1R and MGP at E3 on the Dreamcast. But if it's a license that SEGA paid for, they will obviously determine how it's used. The CART game is a Sega 1st party game, and they will decide whether its in the best interests of the DC to port it. I think Sony's attempts to sue Bleem are ridiculous because the PSX is well past its prime in terms of selling hardware. It's all about software right now and there's no issue with having PC owners being able to buy and play PSX games. It only means more money in Sony's pockets. I bet they are more worried about increased game piracy than that legitimate software buyers will start buying PSX games for their PC's. Randy Randy Magruder http://members.home.com/rmagruder
