Hi While we are all eagerly waiting for GP3 it would be very nice if we could get a 3D patch for this classic game GP2. Just to tie us over this GP3 finally ships ( about 12mths wait ). Although well advanced in age the game is still pretty much a dear old friend to all of us. Many are still playing the game and I for one has found new life from the game eversince I went up to ace level ! ( what a difference ) Being not a programmer, I hope the 3D patch would not take too much work Just hoping for some improvement in framerates and better view ( further ). -- regards =========================================== Singapore

Don't hold your breath... We'll need Einstein to do this without support from MPS. Instead enjoy the new tracks and wait for GP3. JoH

there are several huge roadblocks to that. 1st. if it was easy, somebody would have done it already. 2nd. Geoff Crammond's code is in assembly, not C++ so I'm not even sure a 3d card accelerate anything(using fuzzy logic from Novalogic's claim that their flight sim didn't need or couldn't use 3d card cuz it was coded in assembly...) 3rd Every single graphic item would have to be converted into polygons...that might take a real long time(Ef2000 and Flying Corps, were two of the first sims to patch 3d graphics onto a flat game. The original estimate for both sims was a couple of months tops, I believe it took almost a year, with very motivated companies working full speed to accomplish.)[counterpoint Tomb raider had a 3d patch in a matter of weeks...} Sorry all my examples are from flight sim genre's but thats where I was*** when the 3d patches started trickling in. dave henrie -- On May 17, 1999 A Whale was killed off the coast of Washington State. Can't be done without the source and MPS are not likely to ever make that public. MPS obviously considered this a dead product (in terms of user support and further development) long before 3d acceleration was a real issue with most people. To be honest I'm not sure how this would affect things. As far as I understand it if the assembly made the correct calls it would be able to do it but that would probably require a LOT of work, and thus cost much more than any customer goodwill created by the patch could ever generate. Well as the objects in GP2 are generally texture mapped polygons this wouldn't be an issue. It would only be a problem to make the rendering of the engine work with polygons where there weren't already polygons (i.e. Novalogic's voxel engines). The main reason for the people have problems coding engines that work in D3D, OpenGL or card native modes is that most of the engines are very optimised for the way they work and making them work according to a standard is not a simple matter. 3D patches are very strange and I'm glad that the days of them are over now :) M

Screamer 2 & Nascar 2 had a 3D patch Did you take as long too? Too bad........GP2 will continue to be a classic and played by many even when GP 3 is out.

Nascar Racing 2 already had Rendition-Ready 3d capabilities out of the box, and was released a year after Gp2. The era of *** changed alot in those two years, with the apparition of the Voodoo1 card and the boom of new 3d technology. And IIRC N2 was assembled in C++ ??? -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- May the Downforce be with you...
