Nascar Racing - EA vs. Papy

14 posts by 12 people · 14 Jul 1999 - 16 Jul 1999

Could EA Sports be giving Papyrus a run for their money? I have purchased all of the Papyrus Nascar Sims to date and have enjoyed them over the years. After stumbling across Nascar Revolution I feel I should at least download the demo and see if it appears to be as good as EA Sports makes it sound. If anything comes out of this maybe Papyrus will take some of the things EA Sports is doing into consideration. After all I do not know of any sports games that EA has not been able to make the best game possible. Well the demo should give me a better idea. Check it out for yourself www.nascarrevolution.com Let me know what your thoughts are about EA Sports getting into the Nascar Simulation business. Papyrus has ruled this market for a few years. It's about time they had some competition! Could it be good for the consumer? Could it be bad for Papyrus or is EA just wasting their time? Mark
No, the full version of NasRev is worse than the demo. I enjoyed the demo of C***te and thought it would be a fun game. But, like the game, those claims were unrealistic. The patch made it better but it still isn't even close. Sure, it had the Brickyard, but Quantity never beats quality. When Papy gets those AI problems***ed, which supposedly will be in N3, there won't be anything worth talking about from other companies. From Indy Car Racing to Nascar to GPL, Papy is and always has been the best. Unless EA improves a WHOLE lot, EA is wasting their time Phillip

On Wed, 14 Jul 1999 20:47:51 -0400, uhh.. nope. Me too. [uh-oh] Its not. I hope not. It sure will ... :) We already have, several months ago. Try this site: http://www.team99.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi? I think they don't know what they're doing, and you will too. They have none yet. LOL!!! EA couldn't buy a clue about Nascar racing. Interesting take, but unfortunately, it's complacency that leads to trouble. EA has a HUGE amount of money to spend and I know a few people on the team. EA is VERY committed to the NASCAR license. It doesn't matter how good or bad their game is this year or next year, they'll just keep collecting user feedback and churning them out. Look at how they turned Madden on the PC from ***to very good. I'm not saying this will happen overnight, I'm just saying don't underestimate a company that is perfectly willing to look far into the future and gradually improve their product, even if their first attempt leaves something to be desired. Right about the time Papyrus gets complacent with their NASCAR license, EA will be right there. Let me reiterate this: I'm not saying EA has anything on Papyrus for sheer realism in physics...I'm just saying that Papyrus should not RELY on the current state of NASCAR Revolution as an indicator of what to expect next year or the year after... Really? A major portion of newsgroup people would take issue with that comment. I personally think they make the best looking, most frustrating games on the planet. Their games look just flawless but after a bit of play holes as big as the grand canyon start appearing in just about all of them. Their hockey game has scores of 2-1, great right? No, because a typical game includes 200 shots on net and a 2-1 score (one of 100 gripes with NHL). Madden's pretty solid but even it has major holes and this after nearly a decade of development. EA is never wasting their time. THEY own the market. People like eye candy because 90% of them don't have the time to commit to exploit the AI issues inherent in EA titles so, they love them. Great job EA is doing on that front, but those of us who are serious about our games are left behind. *** RTH ***

The only problem here is if Sierra see that just the level of realism of NRev(or as I should say more, non-realism) is enough at Papyrus for their Nascar line of racing simulators. Bad track accuracy, gameplay bugs, questionable physics, outdated game engine, etc.. If this happens, we are in big trouble, but I can see other company raising here if Papyrus doesn't take the opportunity. Because the Nascar line of software at Papyrus is the center point of all the company. If it goes down, everything attached to it will, unfortunately :( -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Hiu Guys Just could'nt resist this thread, I to played the demo and yes it was awful!!! but now I have the full game plus the lastest patch from EA, and it 'rocks' I know it's popular to knock 'Nascar Revolution' but I wonder just how many of the knockers have actually played the game with the patch?? not many I suspect, all this elitist stuff 'bout 'eye candy' so what !!! if a game looks good and your using a monitor!! is'nt that the general idea, to make it look good!!! and like 'em or loathe 'em EA as a publisher, without a doubt know how to do that, look at the current products SCGT,NFS4, no body can honestly say that because a game has cutting edge graphics, that it is then some how inferior to older games!!come on guys some of you are so conservative, lighten up!! accept change. Leesee PS. Bye the way I dont work for EA!!!

On Thu, 15 Jul 1999 10:05:02 +0100, David, how do you like the 10 car pileups in the patched NR, with no caution flag?

Well after the long download I istalled Nascar Revolution. Not much to compare with Papyrus except for some of the graphics. The track lighting is very cool, the cars looking pretty good, and the slow trasfer from daylight to night is great. The only other things I liked were the orange cones on the side of the track you can hit and make them fly, engine sounds and paint on the walls after hitting them. All in all Papyrus has got a great SIMULATION of Nascar racing. Hopefully N3 or N2000 will get better graphics. N99 was a step up from N2 and maybe they are going on the right track for the next version. By the way the***pit view in EA really sucks and the hands on the steering wheel was very stuip to me. Mark

Hate to be the bear of bad news, but I've seen this in Papy's Nascar sims too......PLUS......in Papy's sims all of the cars just park on the track instead of going around the pileup making it even more unrealistic.

'rocks'< I guess you didn't race on the road tracks yet? There you will discover the lacks of physics in NR: In lower gears everytime you hit the brake a little too much, the car will spin around, even driving totally straight. The reason why is clearly visible, watching the movements of the car: It does not move around it's "corners" (or wheels), but around it's center, I would say: like an egg. And I believe it must be very hard to slow down an egg!!! The movements are quite similar to that in NFS3 or 4, so I'm just waiting for EA to create an EGG RACING SIM. There could be different levels: boiled for the intermediate player, raw for the *** simmers (damage model!) and scrumbled for the beginners (more downforce, nothing left to damage!) ... Didn't really find the 'eye candy' in NR!?!? Oh, I forgot: you can paint pretty girls on the hoods, then you get real 'eye candy' ;>) CU Zolli BTW: If you got setups for the road tracks that really work, please share them.
You have to love that rear view mirror though. Awesome! Mark D. Lough wrote
