GPL 1.1, MS FF out of sync or underdamped

1 post by 1 person · 14 Jul 1999 - 14 Jul 1999

Hello, First off: What a freaking great FF implementation. I first tried it right before going to bed, and since I have to work I could not sit up all night. Guess what, I really couldn't sleep, I was too e***d, just like the first time i raced go-kart. But i have encoutered some funny behaviour. Not so funny actually, it's completely logic, but it sure was strange. It's just another statement of how brilliant the physics in GPL is. Try running slow at a straight and stay off the trottle. Give the FF wheel a little tap to the left or right and let it go. It then starts to waggle back and forth with increasing amplitude until the car hits something and the steering goes back to normal. Before the car hits something you get too worried about the wheel so you stop it yourself. The reason for this is that the front tires turn angle depends on the angle of the wheel, and the wheel's angle depends on the angle of the tires. When the wheel gets a little tap, the forces of the moving tire is trying to straighten out the wheel, and then the wheel doesn't stop soon enough and gets pushed in the opposite direction, and here we go. It's a underdamped system. I hope despite my bad english this is understandable. The question is : Should i try to andjust the damping or the sync-number to fix this ? From wave-physics this is called a underdamped system, so maybe I should increase the damping, or is that too theoretical ? -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying
