According to www.whra.com there is some info regarding a Late Model/Sprint
Car racing game to be released by the makers of Powerslide in November 99.
Does anyone know anything about this? This is the first I have heard of it.
Ratbag's dirt track late model and sprint car sim announced
A poster noticed news of a late model and sprint car racing game from Powerslide developer Ratbag, due in November 1999. Fans debated whether its figure-8 track belonged in a serious sim, and a poster apparently from Ratbag said figure-8 was a side feature and the focus was on simulation. Much of the thread became reminiscences about real figure-8 racing at short tracks such as Riverhead.

Dude. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Here is a better link you

Hopefully they won't succumb to the dark side and make it yet another arcade
racer. If this turns out to be a *** sim I will be in absolute heaven.

Since when is Figure 8 racing not a major motorsport? They happen at tons of
short tracks across the country every weekend. Hell, Louisville Motor Speedway
up here has Figure 8 races for three or four divisions each Friday night. I'd
actually like to try out the Figure 8 scene without wasting thousands of
dollars on a car that I'm most likely gonna thrash on the racetrack.
Also, from my understanding, they're using a better game engine for this sim.

Well I'm sure that Craftsman Trucks, DIRT and WOO don't use the
figure eight portions of the tracks they race at even when they have
one. However there are many tracks that have a figure eight
configuration and do use it. I don't know if those series are the
types you'd travel to a neighboring track to compete in or just run at
your local track for a trophy & a kiss from a pretty gal. But they do
exist and are raced on. Not too long ago someone posted a link either
in here or on a mailing list, don't remember which, of Figure 8 School
Bus Racing. I even remember seeing, I think on TNN, Figure eight
train racing (3 cars chained together with one driver in front car and
one brake man in last vehicle). Trust me. If you can do it in a car,
It's being done.

Terrance and Philipp,
Youre right, its not part of any major dirt
racing series and it wont be included in any
major series in our game either. The figure 8
section of the game is not the heart of the game,
our focus is on the simulation of oval dirt
racing and it always will be, one day we found
some reference to it on the internet and thought
it sounded like a fun thing to put in, the idea
of smashing into the back markers at a cross
section instead of lapping them sounded great,
and through multiplayer testing its hard not to
burst out laughing when you see two cars in head
of you pile into each other! (although I think in
reality the two guys in the crash wouldnt be
laughing much :)However as I said before, we
arent making a demolision derby style game but
there is racing like this in real life and we're
putting it in just for fun. Theyre an amusing
side track for people that may have an extra car
to risk getting trashed at the intersection or
for people who just want to have a single race on
a figure 8 track.
I hope you all like the full game when it comes
out, please keep posting stuff like this, we do
read it and take great consideration of what you
say.

I'm so glad the buzz on Dirt Track Racing is still strong. I am engorged
waiting for this game.
Anyway.
If this really was one of the guys from Ratbag I have two things to say.
1. Here is a link with pictures of Figure 8 cars crashing.
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/1752/pops.html
If you check the links page there are two awesome shots of crashes. One from
Riverhead Raceway in New York, and one from Sunshine Speeedway in Flroida.
They are both asphalt tracks, but the effect is the same.
Ok. The second thing is. Make me a beta tester already. I mean please, dude.
I'm dyin' here.
Thank You,

You mean they actually race on a figure-of-8 course which doesn't have a
bridge???
How crazy do you have to be to take part in that?
My hometown has an 1/2 mile dirt oval with an figure 8 cross in the infield.
EVERY friday night they would host a demo derby, and the fig 8 race. Big
fun to watch. There seems to be three classes of technique...
1. Never lift off the gas when crossing the intersection, my personal
favorite.
2. Try to time your crossing for a gap in traffic. Very exciting to
watch.
3. Don't cross until it's safe, and actually stop if you have to
(WEENIES) usually results in beeing rammed by drivers from #1 class
(see above).
The winners usually came from the #1 class, I guess cause they spent less
time in the crossing? I have seen events that had 90% of cars piled up at
the crossing. Big Fun to watch. Very crazy to do.

Sports, I believe, and also at my local packed dirt track where it was
called a "Demolition Derby". Both featured lots of wrecks and a sense of
impending doom.
l have a race on tape from ESPN they kept showing from Sept '95 of a Figure
8 race at Riverhead, New York. In this one there was some hits but it was
paved with some pretty nice late model cars and the object was the same as
a local points race on an oval- finish with your car in good shape and win
the race.
The winner was a guy who was favored, and in the prerace interview when
asked what his technique was guess what; he used #1- just step on it.
My favorite part was the start when the flag man waved the green from the
intersection and then ran for his life!
Had to throw in my 2 cents.

Figure 8 racing was invented
here at Islip (now it's a cookie factory.) But the running start still
happens, although the figure 8 races only happen about every other week
around here now. Can you imagine, the new drivers don't want to race the
class.
The best Riverhead start I remember was about three years ago. The
flagman started his run and the cars came bearing down towards him. The two
front cars came together and hooked up, spinning sideways, and were
immediately struck by the second row of cars. This sent them spinning
towards the wall where the starter was trying to get out of the way.(There
used to be a little cut out in the concrete wall for the starter to hide
behind, and then he would jump up onto the top of the concrete wall, and
walk to the left to get out of the way.) Well this time he barely made it
into his little hideout, and turned. What he saw was three figure 8 cars
headed right for his little spot, which was only protected with ARMCO metal
wall. He had just enough time to dive to his left and clear the spot. The
three cars hit the ARMCO and pushed it all the way in, almost sending a car
into the stands. The starter kind of was stunned, not sure what just
happened. Of course at this point I yelled out. "Dude. You almost died!"
There was some laughter from the starter after this, but the hole was filled
in the next week, and from then on he starts his run a little further down
the track. Which is a good thing.
Riverhead has a web site. Not a very good one. But check it out for some
more figure 8 pictures.

Mocker,
Thanks so much for the great story about Figure 8 racing at Riverhead. This
is why they invented the damn Net!
Thanks again,
