OK - here is the scenario. Just got GPL and trying to install on my relatively new system: Gateway P3-500 w/384mb RAM Diamond Viper 770 using Detonator 1.88 reference drivers SonicVOrtex2 A3D sound card MS FF Sidewinder Downloaded the 1.1 patch Downloaded the OpenGL beta patch Installed the main game (outta box) Will NOT run in software 640x480 mode. Can get to pit screen and when it switches to in-car view the monitor flickers and returns me to Win-desktop. Installed the 1.1 patch. Same thing - no software mode play. This is VERY bad when the lowest common denominator will not work. Installed the OpenGL patch. Set to OpenGL and exited and restart. Click the GPL icon....screen goes black...3m:18s later the splash screen comes up. I click on Single Race and 5m:12s later the track select comes up. I pick Africa since it is the default screen. 8m:37s later the PIT screen comes up. I click the green box to start the race and 6m:22s later the green light goes dark and the computer finally locks up. When I restart my system Windows comes up in a 640x480 mode and I have to reset back to my normal default windows resolution. I'd really like to play this game but don't plan on investing too much more time into it. If anyone has any ideas I'm willing to try just about anything. And please don't tell me to get a voodoo card - I'm not going to DOWNgrade my system to play one game. I've handpicked all the components on this system and any game that won't play on it isn't worth having (IMO). Thanks in advance for any help.

We have cards that have run the game with NO problems for months, yet WE have the "DOWNgrade". The irony is severe...... -- Ken's Sig 3.0 "Who is the more foolish? That sounds like a nice system Sinjin. I think you should try the following, in order. Try different drivers for the Diamond. Go back to the default drivers, try some older drivers, definitely change the driver. If you have no luck with drivers, uninstall GPL. Reinstall 1.0 and see if things work. If they don't, try some more video drivers with 1.0. If that doesn't work, go spend $50 on a 8MB Voodoo2. Considering the investment you've already made, $50 is not too much to enjoy THE greatest driving simulation. I know it's about principles, but it supposed to be about driving fast with lots of other people, and if $50 is all that stands in front of me and fast racing with lots of other people,***principles. I prefer racing. If that doesn't work report back to here and let me know how it went, ok?

Never heard of this. I'm guessing that you have a problem with your 2D video drivers and/or DirectDraw setup. Try starting from a desktop at 640x480x16bpp. If that doesn't help, reinstall DirectX 6.1. If that doesn't fix it, see below. Those incredibly long times are a dead giveaway. Your OpenGL ICD is broken, and you're running software OpenGL. This has happened to me twice. Run another OpenGL game (get the Quake 2 demo or Quake 3 Arena test if you don't have one) to confirm that it's a general problem, not just GPL. Go to tweak3d.net and find the TNT tweak guide, in particular the part about switching drivers. If you just install a new driver version over the old one, it probably won't fix the problem. You need to go through the whole procedure: switch to VGA, reboot, delete nv*.* everywhere under \windows, delete the nvidia registry keys, then install the new drivers. PITA. I recommend starting with the latest TNT reference drivers and working backwards until you find a version that works well for you. -- spamgard(tm): To email me, put "geek" in your Subject line.

The rule to buying a computer: Know what applications/games you want to run then buy whatever hardware will work. GPL is worth a "downgrade" of a cheap V2 and will work with your components. -------- Jason Monds "My other car is a Ferrari" http://members.home.net/gpl.mondsj/gpl - For my combined gas/brake setups (Please remove 'no extra spork' when replying)
