GPL 1.1 a disapointment then?

Was GPL 1.1 a disappointment?

Douglas Ellison claimed the patch created more problems than it fixed. Many replied that it worked well with a minimal frame-rate hit, while Mark Seery listed issues such as missing qualifying times, black flags, warping and wasted wheel money, and Ron Ayton said online play had worsened for high-latency connections. Others suggested sync-method settings and Alison Hine's 1.1 FAQ.

It seems that Papy seem to have solved a few problems but made a whole load of new ones... NICE ONE So when's the 1.2 patch? Anyone.... Probably around 2007 going on how long it took to make 1.1 Cheers Doug :-)

Certainly not a disappointment to me. Even better than I had hoped since the framerate hit was minimal on my P2-300/TNT/192MB/MSFF! Framerate hit is nowhere as noticable on my system as SCGT's FF. jb

what new problems have you had? i've only seen improvements.... load of new ones... NICE ONE So when's the 1.2 patch? Anyone.... Probably around 2007 going on how long it took to make 1.1 Cheers Doug :-)

Yep, the main thing I wanted to see was improvements to the online connection problems. I was desperately hoping for a mode where clients wouldn't get disconnected under any circumstances. That would give us the option to configure for ourselves a minimum connection level. ADSL is about to be released nationally in the UK. The likelihood is that British Telecomm will have a monopoly and that means that ADSL hosts will not be viable in this country in the way they are in the States and Canada. I believe that UK T1 and other fast connections give the same grief. If only UK high bandwidth subscribers could have had some input into the testing process....... For me this was far and away the most serious problem with 1.0 - many times more important than all the others put together - but it seems that this has been addressed only minimally if at all. Yeah the remote server stuff would be great if online GPL connections didn't have such weak chins. It rather leaves the UK GPL league without a homegrown host. So yeah, GPL 1.1 is a big disapointment.....a great sim is still a great sim - but no better than before unless low-riders used to bug the hell out of you or you have an FF wheel. Cheers, Paul

Thanks Papy No lap times recorded in qualifying Calibration that doesn't as it did Black flag after every lap in race The straight at the Ring at about 500mph Invisible cars for 3/4 of a lap 100 ($160) for a now redundant piece of FF technology. Six different core ini files tried (Kindly sent from mates on GSB) Two clean (full) installs Nine months of addons now added off! Six months of Beta testing and this is what comes of it I'm impressed Thanks Pappy. GP3 here we come....Maybe one day GRRRRR Mark
Count up how many other people are having the same problems on the same kit, then ask yourself if it's more likely to be a software problem or something up with the configuration/installation on your PC. Have you tried wiping GPL, reinstalling from fresh and applying the patch? It seems like either something in your network configuration or your GPL installation, probably something got messed up with an add-on or tweak. Cheers! It's not a hardware problem. I know that much. As for config, as I said, I've tried two clean installs now. That is in addition to the original attempt to copy the exe file to the previous one Mark

Same here Mark, the patch rocks! I finally got to bed at 6 AM after spending all night trying out all the tracks and some off line and online races. Ok, I did stay up the extra hour for F1 qualifying at 5AM<g> No slowdowns No framerate hit No lost connections No change in***pits or graphics Ran GPL Season to restore Honda and Cooper System, PII 400 128 RAM SB Live Value Maxigamer V2 LWFF Wheel with CH pedals USB Modem I can't wait for all the "This patch sux cuz, like, dude, when my cars sliding upside down I can't feel my helmet hitting the ground." don []-(_)-[]

Mark, have you tried changing to the old sync method (as described in the readme)? That's what it sounds like (combined with a marginal connection and/or CPU). Also, take a look at Alison's new GPL 1.1 FAQ on VROC2 (has some similar info). Good luck. Hi Paul, I'm with you, on this one... It seems everyone is over the moon about how good the FF effects are, but for me, i was hoping for better on-line performances. FF was never an issue for me, but better on-line play was, and that seems to have been made worse for anyone with a latency figure in excess of 400. :( I have tried every combination of Core.ini file that i could attempt to try with a small group of drivers here in Australia and so far, no results have been up to the original version of GPL, as far as on-line performance goes. I am not talking about frame rate hits etc. i am talking about, warping, racing with invisible cars, constant disconnection problems, black flags, no scoring, frame stuttering, slow downs, speed ups etc. etc. etc. I have yet to find a single person with a marginal latency figure that is even slightly impressed with the on-line performance of the GPL 1.1 patch. I am sure you will all say, "Well you should have a low latency", that is fine for you American sim racers etc. but down here in Australia, a good latency figure for us is in the region of 450 to 550, when we are joining races out of Australia. The point being, that with the original GPL, it handled the higher latency figures a lot better than the new version does. "Yes", i have tried switching back to the original Synch method and experimenting with all values of the: clock_adj_delay line, and the best i have found for me is by using the old Synch method, with a delay of 14 and using the old 3/84, instead of the new default of 2/84. On another note, i find the steering response delayed now, almost to the point of being totally detached from the feeling of being even slightly in control, all for the sake of having FF implemented. I do not have a FF wheel, but the steering effects of a non-FF wheel, now feel totally wrong. IMO The brakes and throttle also feel as though they have changed, not for the better either.. It is now hard to lock up a brake, and the throttle is notchy and not as linear as it was. These are all my opinions, and may not be what others are finding, but for me, i much prefer the driving model of the original GPL, and "No", it is not because of the ride height restriction either, as i never did run LowRider setups anyway.. So, IMO, the on-line play has took a major nose dive and the physics feel all wrong, if your not using a FF wheel, if you are using a FF wheel, i hope you enjoy the experience, i didn't... Cheers, have fun!! Ron

I also have these same problems Mark, and i know it isn't hardware related either, and yes, i do know about computer hardware.. I don't think this patch will live up to it's on-line hype.. % I also have these same problems Mark, and i know it isn't hardware % related either, and yes, i do know about computer hardware.. % I don't think this patch will live up to it's on-line hype.. % Cheers, % ron I have no actual data to support this theory, but that hasn't stopped anyone in r.a.s. before <G> I think we have 2 things coming into play here. 1) Folks who have had marginal connections to their hosts in the past. 2) Hosts that have been marginal servers (i.e., maxed out CPU, allowing more clients than their bandwidth can support, etc.). The combination of the above 2 has caused many folks grief to no end with the patch. I also think that once we start using the VROC 2.0 servers for hosting and connecting, some of the problems being experienced will go away. As it is, the majority of races being hosted are through the VROC 1.0 service which doesn't support some of the features included in the GPL patch. -- **************************** Michael E. I don't think 2 mbit/sec down and 384 kbit/sec is marginal. Nor is 400MHz CPU, 256Mb memory and dual 12Mb Voodoo2. It's not the fastest but it's also not the slowest and can't really be described as marginal. I don't mean to lay into Papy who have after all given us a fantastic sim - possibly the last great sim we shall ever see if Randy Magruder's Digital Sportpage article is anything to go on. It's just the frustration of nearly being there but not quite. It's like Tantalus and those ***y grapes. Cheers, Paul

You wouldn't know it by looking at Spyboy, many times this weekend there were 12-15 races going on at one time involving over 70 racers. I had only one disconnect all weekend long, which isn't bad considering all the different core.ini files making the rounds. don []-(_)-[] >>on-line play has took a major nose dive >agreed (UK) >Alan

don, Consider yourself lucky. I was getting disconnected from every race within 2 laps last night. Joel Willstein
