I know theres no rain or weather changes in GPL.
But why?
Wahts the reason?

Die ultimativen DEL/DEB-Add-Ons fr NHL99
Why GPL has no rain
Andreas Uffinger asked why GPL has no rain or weather changes. Bruce Kennewell said Papyrus chose to omit weather unless it could be as realistic as the physics, others cited performance limits, and some joked it never rained in 1967, though David Ewing pointed out that the 1967 Mosport race was wet. Posters also wished for oil spills and compared weather in F1 '97 and F1 Racing Simulation.

"Developer Ethics"
Papyrus (David Kaemmer, I think) decided that, unless the weather
characteristics could be portrayed as realistic (to go with the realism of
the physics) then dry and sunny skies would be the norm.

A few of these sorts of features had to be left out of GPL. Perhaps
the most common excuse for this is the further beatings our systems
would have taken with weather effets. Even the most powerful of
computers still have a hard time running GPL with all the details
switched on, and all the cars on the track. They really couldn't
reduce frame rates any more for weather effects.
Shame.

As an accurate recreation of that season/year, I don't think that it ever
rained during that time. At least it didn't rain during the scheduled
races. Besides, the game is auto racing, NOT meteorology!! The day I play
a racing game.. and at the start of the race... it is sunny, and by the end
of the race, it is pouring rain... THEN I will be impressed. Otherwise the
so called 'weather' effects are just plain stupid.
The best game I have ever seen portray weather effects was Flight
Unlimited... when the rain streaked back on the canopy, I nearly lost my
mind!!!
I'd like to see that happen in Formula 1... only the WHOLE SCREEN represents
your helmet visor.

developer team saying, that they didn't include rain and weather in GPL,
because it would not have been realistic enough with today's technology. I
think he also said, that they would probably/maybe include rain and weather
effects in future titles, featuring realistic puddles and water running over
the track.
If anything I said is wrong or not exactly right, please correct me.

And have no peripheral vision (or at least even less than currently)? :)
However, I concur it will be nice to see a sim that the weather isn't an
effect, but a condition that lessens and worsens as the race progresses (or
moreso, then entire race weekend)
It happens that it never rained during any of the races at the F1
season of 1967...

You obviously haven't played F1 97.
As I said, you obviously haven't played F1 97. It even includes tear
offs!
As for Flight Unlimited, if the weather effects were anything like
they were in FU2, it was the best weather computers have ever had to
cope with. I could swear that when I touched the screen I felt
condensation.

Actually, it was wet and drizzly for the race at Mosport. Read the report
from Motor Sport magazine at

"Clark was using his usual car, 49/2, while Hill had the choice of 49/1 or
49/3; whichever he did not want would be used by E. Wietzes, a local
driver who knows the circuit well but who had not handled anything more
powerful than a GT40."
Yeesh! Imagine Joe Sports Car Driver being given the keys to Schumacher's
T-car at the start of the US Grand Prix next year. Wietzes' qualifying
time was within 9% of Hill's though.

i can see how 'completely realistic rain' would be very hard to
implement, and require massive heaps of cpu, but what about realistic
oil/fuel spills?
wouldn't it be great if when following a lotus, its engine gave way,
dropped a lot of oil, and perhaps continued to leave a trail as it
limped its way back to the pits. marshalls with red/yellow striped
flags, lesser drivers (me!) taking no notice and spinning off into the
boonies.
one for gpl2 perhaps?

The race or the rain, Chris?!

> No. It rained hard at Mosport. Made it a great race too - > because it was off and on. > > It never rained in 1967 !The ultimate in realism would to be driving at Spa (in 1966) and pulling out
from behind to pass a slowing Dan Gurney, who pulls over to take a leak
beside the road, leaving his Eagle idling in neutral and a rock shoved under
its front wheel to stop it rolling!
The rain and its effect on the leaders in their lap times.
Now, I wasn't going to mention it, but - if anyone wants to experience
a setup that makes the GPL car handle like it is on a wet track that
is slowly drying out - especially at Mosport and Spa where the track
already looks wet - on my computer anyway - I got the setup (and I am
sure
it can be greatly improved upon). I always wished some online group
would
try this and let me know how it went. It would take tremendous patience
as well as car control with a little daring thrown in here and there
to win one of those races. Should make a lot of great replays too!

Perhaps you could upload this setup to the binaries simulator
newsgroup, for us all to enjoy?

That was a rhetorical question....which is almost impossible to flag when
posting! :o)
