V2 SLI or V3 3000 with GPL?

Second Voodoo2 for SLI or a Voodoo3 3000 for GPL?

Sondog asked whether to add a second Voodoo2 for SLI or buy a Voodoo3 3000 for GPL. Opinions differed: some said SLI gave real gains at 1024x768, others that the Voodoo3 was faster and allowed 1280x1024, with Hena Hakkinen noting SLI slowdowns are usually caused by vsync settings. Voodoo3 users needed to limit textures to 2MB, and the poster bought the Voodoo3.

I have a 12mb Diamond Monster II and was considering purchasing another one to run SLI. I have the rebate offer of $50 from diamond. Will I see a measurable performance increase with two cards running GPL, or should I get the V3 3000? Any comments or recommendations appreciated. Sondog
I have a voodoo 3 2000 PCI running GPL and it works very well (need the glide patch from thePits.com though) - faster than SLI, but as a game card, voodoo 3 may not necessarily be best in terms of future proofing & also color depth is limited. TNT maybe the one to go for in the long term. I am not that bothered - swapped the voodoo 3 for a gameboy and they didn't have new TMT or any other next generation cards at the time. -- Rich "The Jackal" Senior digital animator London UK Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Don't waste your money on a SLI setup for GPL - it will more likely hurt your framerates than improve them. Get the V3/3K instead. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.members.home.net/jms1/index.html Barbarian Diecast Collector (370+ cars and counting) http://members.home.net/jsimm/diecast_index.html Internet Grand Prix Series Season 2 http://www.paddedwall.org/igps2/igps2.html North American Stockcar Racing Online Competition http://www.paddedwall.org/igps2/igps2.html Super X Philes http://members.home.net/kap/superx/superx.html If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
I have SLI with GPL.. and it works great.. I have a 333 and can get 36fps at 1024x768.. which is the main reason I got another. V3 is too expensive. TNT2 isn't cheap and no-one knows if it works... V2's are now REALLY cheap.. so it may be the way to go.. if you wait.. you'll be waiting for ever.. I think another V2 might be a good option.. What CPU you got?? I was SLI for a while (It generated to much heat for my computer), I took them out and I'm running a Voodoo3. I think the Voodoo3 is much better than SLI. I can get 1280x1024 in every game (that supports it). The extra Voodoo2 is not worth the extra money. If you don't get a Voodoo3, save your money.
I've been running V2 SLI for a few months now and am considering upgrading too. Will V3 3000 straight out of the box work with GPL or would I need anything special (I've done the glide 2.53 in my GPL startup dir thing). Thanks, Dennis

Can you get 12801024 in GPL? Every setup I've tried sticks the res down to 512384, even though it *says* 12801024. MM
Bubb 28 Jun 1999#476676
Yes, I can run 1280x1024 on my V3/3k, P2-300 with 36fps (except at start) and all detail on. I actually run it mostly at 1024 because the text is a little larger in chat mode for online racing and I have a 17' monitor. If I had a 19" or larger monitor I would run 1280x1024. -Gary On Mon, 28 Jun 1999 20:46:38 -0700, "Mr Meaner"

What I saw as the biggest difference when going from 1 12mb V2 to an SLI rig wasn't improved frame rates, but the ability to run 1024x768 at roughly (slightly better) fps than 800x600 (except at the start or in the pits). -- Philip M. D'Amato

On Mon, 28 Jun 1999 20:46:38 -0700, Yes, you can. It becomes a little slow, however.

was an improvement, but with the V3 the CPU becomes the bottleneck. I now the START of a race at 1024x768. The biggest improvement with a V3 is the ability to run at 1280x1024. The new dashpanels in 16bit(I think) look awesome at this res. To summarize: get a second V2 if moneys tight - you will certainly notice the improved framerates, get a V3 (preferable 3K) for future CPU enhancement and the ability to run at higher res. A V3 3K at 1280 is faster than one V2 at 1024 on a Cel450. >I have a 12mb Diamond Monster II and was considering purchasing another one >to run SLI. That's bull. This is a common mistake to leave buffer swaps synced with monitor refresh. For some reason installing the 2nd V2 does this by default. I know for a fact that SLI is faster in GPL than single V2. Hena

Very true, but that wasn't the point. I only pointed out that SLI is faster in GPL than a single V2, the fact that you had misleading information on. If someone has, say TNT2 card and a V2 and wants to keep them, it may be feasible to add another V2 to increase GPL performance. Hena

Thanks for the advise guys it really helped me make a decision. I bought the V3 3000. Sondog
Why, the TNT2 cards are faster than the V2SLI for GPL. TNT2 Ultras are better still. And yes, I have a TNT2 Ultra AND a V2SLI combo.
Driver 29 Jun 1999#476878
The only thing I needed to do, was set the limit to 2 meg textures. Works great. Works great on all the other games I've got also.

GPL is capped at 36 fps, which a single Voodoo 2 can reach, given sufficient CPU power and not-quite-maxed detail settings. Are you getting consistent 36 fps on your TNT2 Ultra, even in traffic? What resolution? What mirror refresh setting? What CPU? -- spamgard(tm): To email me, put "geek" in your Subject line.
On my PII450 my V2 SLI was actually slightly faster then a v3 3000. I used the George Smiley patch to get the proper textures. I returned the v3 3000 and will wait for the 3500. (I want the video in for my camcorder). I also will enjoy freeing up 2 pci slots. > My V3 3000 card runs GPL very well. I do have to limit texture memory to 2mb

Yes, and at what resolution? 640x480. :) Yes, 1024x768 and 15 cars is all I was using before and haven't changed it. Mirror refresh set to 1. P2400 for the cpu.
What amazes me is that a lot of people *seem to be* considering a frame rate of 26-29 fps "at the start" and "when there's a big wreck" as being completely acceptable. IMHO, those are precisely the instances (in an online race) when you simply cannot function sufficiently unless your system is capable of 36 fps. I'm running a P2/450 (overclocked to 504) with 256mb of ram and a voodoo2/12 card, and I can't get 36 fps all the time (including the two instances I cited above) unless I run my detail bias at 90% and turn off some of the object detail. IMHO, connection quality and frame rate are much more important than realism and eye-candy. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.members.home.net/jms1/index.html Barbarian Diecast Collector (370+ cars and counting) http://members.home.net/jsimm/diecast_index.html Internet Grand Prix Series Season 2 http://www.paddedwall.org/igps2/igps2.html North American Stockcar Racing Online Competition http://www.paddedwall.org/igps2/igps2.html Super X Philes http://members.home.net/kap/superx/superx.html If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

We could all sit here and argue semantics all freakin day, but the clearly smart purchase here would be a V3/3K. There's no point scored, or match won. John this was my Point of "Point, Set & Match." No more. No less.. Some of these threads just go on endlessly. You know it.. I know it.. Whether it is a miss-spelled word, an English lesson etc... I was not trying to single you out & if it appeared to be I apologize! I feel it would be nice if we had more "rec.autos.simulators" discussions instead of all this "hair-splittiing".. All constructive comments welcome. Cheers Thom_j.
I think what we're seeing is all of the Papy faithful going a little stir crazy waiting for a patch on one sim, and for an update on another. Everything has been discussed to death, so our only recourse is to attack each other's opinions about the best hardware for a given sim. Papy could solve the whole problem by releasing the GPL patch and a N3 demo... :-) says...
